I don't really get the whole thing with Shinobu.

so the whole time she was hiding in Koyomi's shadow.
the neko knew this, that's why she asked him to go in that spot with no shadow before attacking him.

was it that Shinobu felt it was time to leave, and Koyomi finally accepting that as well?

No, it was Oshino who felt it was time to leave.

anyway, the thing I'm actually confused about, is it ever explained why Shinobu suddenly is living in Koyomi's shadow now? or was it something that's clarified in the novels?

It should be clarified as assumed knowledge in the anime when Oshino was waving on the roof to Araragi-kun, he actually was waving farewell. At that point, no before then Shinobu already was in Araragi-kun's shadow when he brought Hanekawa along to meet Oshino. Shinobu lives in Araragi's shadow because they both are... Uh, linked? Shinobu requires the blood of Araragi to continue living and Araragi would go suicidal if Shinobu is dead basically. So yeah, she is his "life support" in a manner. Basically it boils down to the fact that Araragi "owns" Shinobu not Oshino, I don't know why Araragi left Shinobu with Oshino... Maybe he was bothered by the fact of what happened beforehand.

The way I read it was "Move forward, otherwise there won't be a shadow" (i.e. there's no shadow when you're directly under it). 'Cause I interpreted it as the cat knowing all along and intending to be defeated by Shinobu from the start.

In the previous episode, it was mentioned that some of Shinobu's vampiric involved turning into a shadow along with disappearing and appearing [presumably to and from one I'd think].

The way i interpreted Neko Hanekawa's action was to relieve Hanekawa's stress no matter what.

She probably had a number of plans laid out in order to do so and you can see them play out one by one as she went through the motions. The one that actually came through just so happened to be and was one short from being her last resort imo. The last resort of course being to kill Araragi the source of stress itself.

If Shinobu hadn't come out to save Koyomi nor had he asked for helped, I believe that without a doubt the Neko would've killed Koyomi for real. She ran through all her other options first and gave Araragi that last little nudge and hint because she wanted to avoid killing him at all cost if possible, but was still prepared to nonetheless.

So in short her intentions in the end came down to trying to kill Koyomi and whatever happens after, happens. Either he dies or the vampire girl comes and saves him.

Because those two are two completely different things.... She/it 's cute through

Anyway.... the last episode lost its impact due to the time gap. They should just end at ep 12, give out a hint, then get from 13 to 15 into new season

That wouldn't make any sense. The arc is called Tsubasa Cat, not Hitagi Date, see that's the problem I have with the Bake fandom since most of us see the date episode as the most awesomest episode ever. That episode is the most stand-alone episode ever, it's only role in the series is as a "memorable moment."

It can't be worse than a time gap of 8 months or so. But then if you buy the DVD and watch it now, there would be no time gap.... Maybe this anime target a different group of audience?

That's what I took it as too...the weird thing is, though, that Araragi stepped BACKWARDS at that point, to move further away from the light => in English, rather than "Move forward...", we'd probably have said "a bit further from the light..." or something to that effect...

*shrugs* that's why they streamed the first 4 episodes of the arc again. I can't say that the gap between episodes didn't have an impact on how well this conclusion might have been received, but it didn't really bother me. I'm quite used to waiting months and months on end for books, movies and even manga.

The waiting didn't bother me that much either, though I had went a head and re-watched the other 14 episodes, which probably helped some. While I don't think the final episode was the best episode of the series, it was still a very solid ending in my opinion. And really hope they animate the prequel/sequel to it.
