Symbolism of hope was there in both Evangelion and Madoka. But it's just SYMBOLISM. Evangelion ending was Spoiler:
Regardless of what fuckin religious philosophical shit and symbolism of HOPE people can put in, that's one of the most zetsubou shita ending ever existed. There was no dream, there was no hope in that exact situation. Also we all know how crazily fucked up all the characters in Evangelion is. Plus, Madoka becoming 'SHINJI THE FEMALE VERSION' is very likely at this point, which is premise of ALL DARK. ...

All these "Madoka Magica is the new EVA" makes me imagine "Tsubasa wo Kudasai" playing as Madoka crash through the body of a humongous Witch to reach into Homura (who have become that Witch) who is in its core, shouting "AYANAMIIIIII!!!!!!!11" "AKEMIIIIII!!!!!!!11"
Spoiler for .:
Also, Tsubasa wo Kudasai is currently playing in my foobar2000

I've seen a lot of anime with a lot of deaths, both of heroes and villains. There were pretty horrible scenes in Elfen Lied, Higurashi, Death Note, Gantz, Darker than Black, and similar members of the "Dark" genre... there are hundreds, if not thousands, of deaths of named people in Detective Conan alone, and some of them are actually moving... even seemingly lighthearted series such as Slayers (or Next?) and D4 Princess had at least one very powerful episode, as did Trigun (normally comedy-action). But despite the fairly obvious foreshadowing, nothing quite prepared me for episode 3 of Madoka Magika. I mean... Nanoha 1 and 2 both made me cry, as did Card Captor Sakura... but ultimately, the genre is upbeat.
The closest comparison I can think of is to a youtube video of some woman on a safari who got out of her armored jeep to get a better camera angle on the lions she was photographing, and predictably was gutted and eaten alive, making 'pain' noises as her comrades watched from the jeep. Yep, that was pretty horrific. But in terms of uneraseable memories, I think this takes the cake, if you'll excuse the pun. The only thing I can put on the same level of, hmm, this emotion that I felt, that has no English name, after watching "Saving Private Ryan". In fact, Saving Private Ryan was a bit more powerful overall, but then, I was younger at the time - and I can't say that any given scene was stronger. I had to watch 4 straight episodes of Ika-Musume before I could even consider going to bed after this, and even then, I had bad dreams all night long (some including dying on trains). Madoka is the first surrealistic anime that I thought was not a piece of crap (I have a low tolerance for collages, art deco, cubism, and similar). Indeed, it is excellently done from every angle to which I am privy - my grossest complaint would be that Yuki Kajiura's music here does not touch, say, that in Noir or Mai-Hime; but it is still quite appropriate and effective for its scenes. So I will continue to watch... or more honestly, I'm incapable of NOT watching, despite how painful it is... and so, I can only hope there is a happy ending.

It appears to no longer be available. I saw it a couple years ago; perhaps Youtube has cracked down on 'snuff films' (though I couldn't find it on Google either), or perhaps it was hosted on a less-moderated site. Please understand, I don't bookmark these things; I have a friend who tricks me into watching them without me knowing what they are. His all time favorite anime is Seirei no Moribito, which I told him to watch because it is incredibly good; but alas, I doubt he would have liked it at all were it not full of highly realistic, graphic violence.
P.S. This is an GOOD Youtube video that one might see on an African safari, in which no humans are killed: Battle at Kruger. It's another one he sent to me, though given the 58 million hits, you may have already seen it. Moving... memorable... but not quite like Madoka ep. 3.
