For example Rena hitting Mion with her cleaver in Tsumihoroboshi, that was funny, her face changed shape so many times over ten seconds
1. Rather shifty animation again at some points, my personal issue with the way Krauss and Natsuhi's death were animated. However, I probably wouldn't have noticed some of them if people didn't point them out lol.
2. The pacing at the start was about right, but at about halfway through it went into overdrive with some rather nasty cuts. Right now given what's left of the arc it's understandable, but if they screw up the next episode sections like these won't be excusable.
The Good:
1. I've got to hand it to Ohara. She's really managing to convincingly sell Beatrice's sudden change in attitude and temperament, especially now that we're approaching that oh-so vital ending of the arc.
2. George's final moments with Shannon was as heartbreaking as it originally was. Especially since Evatrice interrupts it at the worst possible moment. Likewise, Jessica's final moment of fear while being blinded was well executed.
3. I'm actually happy they didn't rush it that much to end with the scene I expected since it would make a good cliffhanger "fight" between the two, since in the long run t would cause so many pacing problems. It ended on the note that Beato will make a move now against Evatrice, which is itself a great setup for the final episode of the arc.
The next episode, the final episode of this arc, is arguably the most important one and most climactic event of the series up to this point. In a way, how the next episode is handled may make or break the first season for me, but given that this was a pretty strong episode I have high hoped for it.
Well the RAW I got was absolutely horrible, so I couldn't understand half of what was being said and can't really critique the voice acting yet, but I think it was all but perfect. Slightly more rushed than last week's, but I can imagine at least 5 other ways DEEN could have screwed this episode up based on the previous arcs.

You can tell they've got Ryukishi over their shoulders saying 'this is the episode you really can't fuck up' because EP3 has been, for the most part, fantastic. If next week can be done as well as this and last week's episodes, then I'll be happy even if they go on to screw up EP4. I was actually expecting my favorite scene to happen this week, but I'm glad they didn't rush it as much as I thought, and hopefully it won't cause next week's episode to end up like episode 11 (because I really liked episode 9 and 10 as well).
My only real complaint is Jessica being shot. Wasn't she just supposed to have gotten too close to the gun and been burned by the hot air, the bullet narrowly missing her? Here it looks like she actually took the bullet to the eyes, and if that were the case I'm pretty sure she'd need a little more than a few bandages to fix it. It also looks a lot less accidental and I imagine Anime-only viewers will see this as further reason to label Eva as the culprit of this arc (personally I'm on the side that doesn't). That and having Beato and Ronove's talk at the end of the episode happen in the Meta World with Battler and Virgilia right there...this should have happened either inside the room with Jessica or right out in the hallway, with the typical 'everything else is grayed-out and frozen' visuals. But I guess that's not a terribly big deal...just seems lazy to me, and takes away some of the impact by having Battler pretty much listening in on the whole talk. *shrug*
Other than that, I'm very pleased. Beatrice's good side is shining through perfectly, I thought the George/Shannon scene was really touching (though I wanted to see George struggle trying to fly through the sky!!), and Jessica's angry side was portrayed greatly. Introducing Ange seems odd, but I guess they had to make up for not having her mentioned yet. And they kept the numbers on the door!! I was afraid this would go the way of MBTQ in EP2.
I'll probably have more to say when the subs come out, but I hope my expectations for next week's episode aren't betrayed.
The episode was rather good up until after George and Shannon's (re)death. I was a little disappointed that they turned George into a butterfly instead of making him float down for the whole "anyone can do magic if they believe" thing. And I was really confused about Krauss smoking - I REALLY don't remember him smoking in the VN. This is probably to make up for cutting out Hideyoshi and Rudolf smoking on the boat, but it just wouldn't be the same for the explanation that comes later on, you know?
And then they cut out the Siestas trying to pierce Beatrice right after George and Shannon and Virgilia (??!) taking the blow for her. It just bugs me because it really shows that Eva-Beato is after her too. Instead it just came off as a "Haha, in your face Predecessor-sama."
The rest was incredibly rushed and just... idk. The supposed struggle of Eva and Jessica was really fucked up. They were supposed to have been wrestling for the gun and Eva accidentally pulled the trigger, but now it just looks like she shot directly at Jessica as she was running to her. She probably wasn't close enough for the muzzle flash to hit her face, and how could she have dodged the bullet? This is by far my biggest complaint of the entire episode.
And one more thing. Ange. While I'm certain a lot of people rejoiced at seeing her, I think it just... really spoils a surprise for later. It would have been better if they had only shown a silhouette or not shown her at all as Battler said her name.
