Just to comment, I don't really think it's fair that some anime, like say Gurren Lagann, was given the final nominaltion in so many genre catagories. Sure it was possibly the most popular anime this year, but pick a genre already. It's not fair to another series that may have missed the cut off in say adventure/fantasy, when Gurren Lagann is also nominated in Action/Fighting and mecha/scifi. I mean it's one thing if something's nominated in a genre catagory and then in best story line, but there's no reason for a series to be in multiple genre catagories.

Somehow I'm feeling like some people are thinking that I chose the nominees myself.
However that would be wrong, all nominations we're chosen by the member and I decided to keep my own opinions to myself, I'm aware that I could have only kept the genre category with the highest results but I do think that this would have been unfair to all the members that nominated so I kept the results as they were. Restricting each animes to a single(or genre category) category while there is 15 of them would have probably been a poor choice and would have split the nominations for no good reason.
Besides, as far as I am concerned if the people want to see Gurren Lagann then so be it, there will always be people against it but that's the rule of the game. =/

At this point in time I can already tell you that the results will be quite something, well anyhow, this time I will also post the vote results along the winners so that everyone can understand better. This is an open voting anyways, I doubt that the members will mind.

I lean more toward Kamui's viewpoint that series should only be eligible in one genre category, though obviously they can also be eligible in categories like music, writing, etc. I'd let people nominate shows in as many categories as they like, but when it comes time for voting I'd place shows in only the genre category for which they received the most nominations.

I also think WanderingKnight's concerns about the lack of synchronicity between anime seasons and the Gregorian calendar make sense, but I'd define the season as October 1st through September 30th. That way we're voting on an annual award at the end of the year rather than in the summer. The more thorny problem is whether a series has to both start and end in that 52-week period. There aren't many new shows that last longer than a year, so I don't think this is a big limitation in most cases. The problem comes if a show starts airing in, say, August so there are few episodes available for evaluation. One compromise might be that at least half the episodes must have aired (been subbed?) before 9/30. If not, the show is carried over into the next year's competition.

These are just some ideas I've had over the past few weeks as I've thought about how we might make this an ongoing institution at AS. Thanks, as always, to Kyomi for his patience and diligence in managing this year's competition.

How would limiting Gurren Lagann or Claymore to one genre have been unfair to the people who nominated them? The series are still up there after all. I'm not saying toss out a series because people nominated it in multiple genres, just put it in the genre it best fits, or got the most votes in.

Also, while there are 15 catagories on the poll, there are only 6 genre catagories, which are the only ones where multiple nominations are an issue. You're the one running things, so you can do it however you want, but just take another look at the first 3 genre catagories. Gurren Lagann is in all 3, Claymore, Code Geass, and Dennou Coil are in 2 each. In action/fighting and mecha/scifi, there's only 1 series each that wasn't nominated for another genre. Adventure/fantasy has only 2 that weren't. That just seems a bit excessive and leaves out 5 other series that could have gotten a nomination.

You'd probably spend about as much time having people voting on what genre something fits best as you would voting what was was the best series in a genre though. And do that and you have to do the same for other series in multiple genres.

My proposed method avoids this problem entirely. A show would be placed in the genre category for which it received the most nominations, regardless of whether an "informed observer" might assign it to a different category.

I think that's what Kamui4356 was also saying, I just didn't feel like tampering with the rules once the contest started but it could be a good way to make it work for the future pools.
