The manga is popular but not mindblowingly so (maybe 40,000 to 50,000 copy range?). It's one of those series that probably generated more hype amongst overseas readers than within the home country. I mean, I don't even follow manga (honestly, I don't learn the names of even the most popular series until an anime is announced), yet I've constantly heard of The World God Only Knows.

As for the anime, it's a flop but not an entirely dismal one. Far more people bought this on Blu-Ray than DVD, which means that there are some dedicated fans out there. Nevertheless, breaking even would probably be the best hope.

How did the anime fall so much in terms of ratings and sales?

I'd guess that there was nothing that made it stand out from the competition. Pre-existing manga popularity wasn't strong enough to generate much hype, and for something to sell, you need a good hook (characters, animation, even writing/direction in some cases). Just competent/average isn't enough.

Does around 90k iirc, it's decent but not something I would call popular, anime could give it a decent bump as well.

Well as far as how much the subs was "downloaded" when it was airing, it was the most popular torrent download on nyatorrents beating series like OreImo. So at the very least its a pretty popular series here.

It never beat OreImo. Most people downloaded Mazui's torrents, and since they ues their own tracker they usually don't post the torrents on Nyaa (Index II is an exception due to UTW's involvement). OreImo regularly got over 50,000 downloads. Kami nomi barely hit over 20,000 usually.

Like I said, Index is posted on Nyaa by UTW and Ayako, so you can look yourself, although some of the episodes are split between Ayako and UTW in total downloads. Not that it matters, but Index consistently does 35,000-38,000 total.
