Well, whenever Jellal is involved, it brings out the most from Erza too. ( for better or worse, some people don't like how she has that attachment to that abusive boyfriend syndrome of a guy. )
Simon must be rolling in his grave.

I would have thought so too if I haven't seen the credits. Jellal/Mystogan in the credits is also at the very young age and if Jellal was trapped in that tower there was no way he could have been out and venturing on his own... Spoiler for certain info in ep 54:

I for one like it a lot. As you've just said, it brings out a lot more of Erza's character, stopping her from just being the same all the time. It's why i'd say her backstory arc is the best Fairy Tail has to offer.

Well, let's not forget that Jellal had his avatar, Sieglain to do a lot of the 'off-tower' wet works. Sieglain must have existed for a decent amount of time since he was trusted and established enough to both be a member of the 10 Great Mages as well as the Mage Council.
On the other hand, Wendy did call Jellal 'Jellal' so it's not like she knew him as a former member of 'Weekly Sorceror's Worst Guys I'd Like as My Boyfriend.' Indeed. It helps that I'm a shipper as well as a sucker for these kind of tragic scenarios, but really, it's refreshing to see Erza get so emotionally choked and it usually builds up to a stronger amount of emotional outpour. ( both good and bad )

The point I was trying to get across is that, despite everything, Erza never 'hated' Jellal. Disgusted at him, prepared to kill him, angry at him, many things, but not 'hate.' In the end, she believed that she lived because Jellal, removed from the control of Zeref saved her. How optimistic... and I think that Jellal being alive here pretty much means that the voice she heard at the end of Tower of Paradise was her own delusions. And there's her reaction when she first saw Mystogan's true face. A turmoil of emotions, but it was pretty clear that it was more positive than negative. Erza Scarlet cannot be disassociated from Jellal Fernandes. She holds dear to that small childhood memory of a young, charismatic boy, and despite the rough waters she had with Sieglain ( never a good relationship there, either ) and all the suffering Jellal caused, she could never hate him... Yup, pretty much similar to shoujo or tv-drama's 'abusive boyfriend' cliche. ( not literally, but similar. ) At least that's how I feel anyway. This write-up is more appropriate for the Erza thread.

Spoiler for Ep54:
I'm not excited about Jellal just because his presences messes up Erza so badly. It's fine to have her emotional and showing more sides of herself. But mostly she freezes up in shock and mixed emotions and gets beaten up. Hardly prime Erza material. She's having enough troubles with the poison and this huge fight against the Dark Guilds without getting extremely distracted. Will have to see how it goes.

I think the more pertinent question on this whole Jellel/Mystogan with Wendy issue is, "how does brain know about Wendy's relationship with Jellel/Mystogan in the first place?" I doubt they were going to broadcast their encounter, unless it was a hugely public event. I hope they will at least answer that.

I don't see what's so bad. In almost every arc, we're treated to heavy doses of Erza's strictness, maturity, light, jovial humour, bright positive interactions with the group... pretty much all the things that make Erza 'Erza.' A little bit of Jellal in her life every now and then to further fuel her character development and put her through irregular motions should be exciting to viewers, not the other way round. Just so long it's productive to her character development. E.g. I thought it was a nice touch when Erza corrected Yajima's naming error on Jellal.

& what i said was just something mild. I don't want to get into the topic. Instead just let this arc takes it's course, and let the anime only watchers enjoy it.
