I tried watching the first two of the newer movies to see if I'd like it. While I did like the first movie(Shinji didn't seem to be such a goddamn pain in the ass), the second movie confirmed why I hated this series in the first place.

The art looks great in the third movie but HELL NAW.

It's really been a while since I saw it, but I remember liking it as a whole (at least the first season. I couldn't really bring myself to watch the whole Endless Eight thing). Naturally, I also cannot speak for everybody, but I guess I'll try to elaborate on why I remember Haruhi's anime as a good series.

The first thing I remember liking about the show was Kyon's narration. It was the only thing that truly helped me get through the first episode (The Mikuru film thing). I found it quite clever in spotting the plot-holes of the Mikuru movie, helping make sure it's sillyness wasn't unnoticed and emphasizing it to great effect. Both the lines and the voice acting I remember being quite spot on and got me quite a few laughs during that episode. Thereafter, Kyon's narration stays as one of the strongest points of the series, in my opinion, highlighting the humour of the situations and adding funny methapors, analogies or overall comments to spice it up even more.

Another thing I remember being cool specifically of the anime was the scrambling of the episodes. I (and I think most people) always found way more interesting the episodes that built the answer to the question "Who the hell are the members os the SOS brigade?". If I could reduce the whole season to only six episodes, they would undoubtly be those that come first chronologically (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi Part I-VI). If the anime had put them in chronological order, I would have likely watched those episodes and merely read summaries of the other ones to see if they were worth the 22 minutes. However, KyoAni played its cards right and arranged them in its now characteristic non-linear order that grabs the watcher's attention by intercalating the sci-fi introductory episodes with the more slide-of-life oriented ones. Besides hooking the watcher by holding parts of the info, this also gives watchers a rest in swallowing everything that is thrown at you from the explanatory episodes, making these episodes a breath of freash air, rather than "another boring comedy episode of the pile in which nothing really happened".

Oh, yeah. I haven't written properly yet about the sci-fi aspect at all. The sci-fi elements of the series are made interesting, in part due to how the episodes were arranged (which I just explained) and how all of them seem to intertweave together. It is fun that all three parties interested in Haruhi's powers are forced to a stalemate in which each part ignores the presence of the others and each have their own supernatural mechanisms and explanations of what is the Haruhi mystery. This is specially appealing when an innocent anime watcher starts this series via a friend's recommendation (such as my case) and considers it yet another slice-of-life comedy and all of a sudden random characters start revealing their identity as aliens, time-travelers and psychics with a serious face one behind another almost to comedic effect while presenting you evidence which leaves you no other choice but to believe them.

This, again, is emphasized by the scrambling of the episodes which makes that, when one episode ends with a sudden and yet unexplained revelation that the then generic comic-relief moe girl is in fact a time-traveler, the next episode is practically a non-sequitor that leaves the watcher doubdting what he actually saw.

All said, if you want to give Haruhi another shot, I recommend you watch the movie The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi. I recently watched it and I think it explores everything I personally liked about the series. Although, I don't really like the idea of forcing yourself to like something. It's not like there is a deity telling us anime fans with we must like and what we must not.

On-Topic: I can't get behind Shingeki no Kyojin. I considered the setting interesting, but I found the atmosphere of despair monotonous after the first five episodes. I find the trio of main characters unappealing and the rest of the cast forgettable. I find it hard to empathize with Ellen since all we see him do is being angry at people and killing stuff.

Why? There's nothing inherently wrong with disagreeing with the general opinion... I mean, oh sure, maybe you were just missing something that prevented you from enjoying the anime to its fullest, but then again, it's entirely possible that it just wasn't your thing, so to speak.

Perhaps I'm wrong by saying this, but I think that a lot of the appeal of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya came from its unique premise. The ideas behind that show have been pretty widely repeated by the industry (including the characters from the show, because Haruhi had to be in everything for years e_e), so looking back on it now the series probably doesn't seem that special.

Also, despite the lack of TTGL discussion these days, I'm not aware of it being even disliked by a majority. For the longest time people raved and ranted about TTGL and although fleeting, people do still reference a lot of the dialogue from the early half of the show. "BELIEVE IN ME WHO BELIEVES IN YOU!" And don't even get me started on what happens if you so much as mention the concept of a drill. It was a strange show, but it really wasn't bad.

I'm not sure if I asked this before, but do a lot of people actually like Nana? When I was watching it for the first time all those years ago it started interesting but then quickly divulged into this very hard-to-watch drama.

Haruhi combines zany anime hijinks with serious sci-fi in a pretty unique way. At least for its time.

I also think Kyon narration goes a long way to determining if a person likes the show or not. The show has a lot more character-based narration than most anime shows do, and I think for many of the show's fans, that's one of its edges.

Yeah, I think its pretty well liked. The characters are, obviously, the major attraction and the voice acting too (for me anyhow). It's one of the better (or is it the only one? hmm...) dramas I have seen.

I was fine with it and probably was a follower of 'you must endure your sad past and overcome it for your family's sake' It was cool but then it used magic to revive dead characters and throw that ideology to the trash can. Then why not revive Tomoya's mother and solve his father's issues with magic too? That will make everyone happy!! .

Btw, I hate Nagi no Asukara already despite the fact it has yet to air on October. The manga is vomitive with its cheap romance cliches and annoying female character.

Tomoya's mother is a very minor character and the conflict was more of him and his dad..... Do you think having your wife die then your daughter can be just replace by you mother...?
