I'm sometimes scared at how bad my memory is. Watching the first two episodes, I realized I remember pretty much nothing from the manga... but the good thing is that I get to experience it for the first time all over again!

These episodes were fantastic. It's like Monster set in Astro Boy's universe.

Got to episode 5. It feels like a mix between Astroboy and Ghost in the Shell. Urusawa's designs seem like a similar style Tezuka used to pull as there is a bluehaired Johan from Monster with the same voice

Yes, the studio vibe as such here is very Production I.G. for me. I mean, if I were watching it without knowing that would have been my guess over, say, vintage Madhouse (which would be more expected).

Finished it. It's a masterpiece.

The animation was perhaps not the best, but the pacing, voice acting, and music were perfect. And the writing is of course incredible, even if there are several elements that require suspension of disbelief. Pluto feels like a product of its time with the obvious parallels to the war in Irak, yet at the same time its themes remain timeless.

Very curious to know what Fubram thought of the rest of the story. I'd personally rank Epsilon's story above North 2's. And Gesicht's several levels above that.

I was confused at first, but then I realized you're talking about the English dub. Funny they got the same person.

That Dr. Tenma is the creator of Astro Boy ("Atom") and appears in Tezuka's original work. (I just started watching the colored remake of Tetsuwan Atom from 1980.) I wonder if Urasawa borrowed the name for his character in Monster.

Pretty much every major character in here appeared in Astro Boy in Tezuka's style.

Also, the shadow of Dr. Black Jack is suspected for the guest appearance for treating the young music composer.

And finished Pluto. Really liked it enough to try Astroboy.

It was definitely him, he was voiced by Akio Ōtsuka who voices Black Jack in various modern versions.

I finally gave the first ep of Pluto a watch through. I didn't think it was bad - but it didn't gel with me. Something just felt off about it all for me. It didn't invoke the mystique or nuance of other Urusawa titles. In some ways, it almost felt sterile. I felt next to nothing for the hour I watched it.

tried it, but dropped. Animation is good, but the drama feels forced, and it became boring that it's not worth sympathizing with the characters. I still prefer the 2003 version of Pluto.

What do you mean? This is pretty much a 1:1 adaptation of what you're calling the 2003 version of Pluto.

did we watch the same show? The 2003 version did not have so much drama.
I still re-watch episodes of the 2003 version to this day. Still entertaining.

2003 version does have drama in small amounts, but it's the level I can tolerate.
overall, it's an experience I enjoyed. Astroboy 2003 is bright and full of hope.

___________

while I could not stomach even one episode of this Netflix Pluto. So boring I could fall asleep.
I really dislike anime that try to put so much drama on the table.

tried episode 1 of Netflix Pluto out of curiosity. Quickly realized it's not to my taste. Very easy drop on episode 1.

Ah, you were talking about Astro Boy. The Pluto manga came out in 2003, so I was confused why you'd like it and not the anime.

I was puzzled as well, why someone would say Netflix Pluto is a 1:1 of 2003 Astroboy.

glad this is cleared up now. So you were talking about the 2003 Pluto manga.
