What an insightful piece, Trajan! Thanks.
May I just say how much I hate the all-too-frequent anime girl who hits boys? I would guess Saki hit Satoru at least half-a-dozen times in those first two episodes. I find her much less appealing as a result. All that hitting usually signals the tsun icebox phase before the dere heatlamp, which would suggest Saki ends up with Satoru, not Shun. If that is not the point of Saki's abusing Satoru, what is the point? A visual expression of her releasing the pent-up emotions she is experiencing as an early adolescent girl? Surely she could find better targets than Satoru. Punch a stuffed animal or go to the gym. Her other female companions seem much less violent, but they also seem more girly and less tomboyish compared to Saki. I suggest Saki look to Tsukishima Aoba as a role-model. (Hmm, could you even play telekinetic baseball? Top batters would have to swing with their minds quickly enough to hit a possibly supersonic fastball. The objects' own inertia puts some limits on how fast both of them can move, but still...)

In any case, I expect they'll tone it down as the plot kicks in.

Best series of the season so far. We're stretched to understand a new world, but not stretched too far. It makes just enough sense that I can go on learning about it, but am still thrilled by the newness of it. It feels like they are walking the edge of a precipice at all times. And of course, the show looks just great.
Saki is much better than just an ordinary tsundere. I can feel every twist and turn of her emotions. Girls hitting guys is not one of my bugaboos, I admit, but I hardly noticed it here. I was too engrossed in Saki's feelings: scared and single-minded and easily put off her game. A very strong main character to identify with, for me. Good work by her seiyuu, Taneda Risa, whom I see is with the agency Office Osawa, which only represents a few top seiyuus: Hanazawa Kana, Kawasumi Ayako, Noto Mamiko, et al. And I thought her singing of the OP was at least as good as her acting. A real talent. She's 24, but just got her first roles this year. But the voice I liked the most in ep1 was her mother's, especially in that emotional scene. She was played by Itou Miki, who was Sachiko in Marimite.

Think of it like that little boy in school who picks on the little girl because he really likes her but doesn't know how to say it. She probably doesn't even realize that Satoru might be envious of Shun getting more of her attention.

The Saki/Shun scene in episode 3 was cute as hell. They make a pretty amazing couple.
Unfortunately, I feel that Shun is triggering a ton of death flags as he gets closer to Saki.

An interesting dynamic in the show is how it seems to make a distinct separation between the apprently innocent childhood of these young psychics and the suggested cruel nature of the world out there. Thats either because they havent been exposed to it yet, or they might just be aware of how different their lives are compared to this real world, if the sudden disappearances and this downright cruel emperor are any indication.
Of course the fact that they dont even seem to mind that kid from class 2 disappearing at all is itself unsettling...

So great, so far. I can't believe they would let children go out in the forest alone, unsupervised. Oh well, it's just a technicality.
So it looks like there were many wars, and in one of them, they seemed to have defeated the emperor and most of the PK (Pscyho-Kinectic?). We still don't know much about the current world, but that cliffhanger at the end seems like it will start to explain a lot concerning what is going on. I really can't wait for next week. As for the library, it looks like an organic and evolving library. I wonder who created it? Was science used, or some of the current special abilities used as well to create it? This story is really pulling you in. I'm so anxious to know what will happen next.

I bet all the kids who encounter the library will be killed off if they are unauthorized to know such things~
This episode also mention the sudden burst of species in few hundred years, due to power of all esper's collective subconscious human thought, which is kinda interesting~ A bird-snake which lay bomb eggs,a like hand grass which is smelly and all eating crab! THe library may also under influence of esper 's human thought, changing it's appearance but the inner function as protecter of library still remain...I think~ |

It's time for another....Coming Back to Bite Them In The Ass!
First up is Shun, who's smooth as a polished stone. Creating a fantastic psychic observatory light show and putting the moves on Saki, eh? Not everyone can do that when they're twelve. 0/5 Grimdarks (Keep Living the Dream, Casanova) Next up is Ancient Storage Device. Saki and the gang have opened up a can of Shitstorm worms and are going to raise hell on the village and themselves with the forbidden knowledge gained from the balloon animal robot. We also found out a way to counter psychics apparently. 5/5 Grimdarks (Shinsekai Just Got Real) Next week, the full details of Revan's Star Map- er, Psychicpocalypse will be revealed. |

Ep3: and it just gets better. I was so wrapped up in the story and the personalities that the episode ended sooner than I expected. Saki is a complex character, both shy and bold, insecure and aggressive.
The kids by themselves in the wilderness works because they have the force. And it works emotionally because the characters seem to be walking on the edge of disaster throughout the show. And their strange acceptance of their groupmate's death makes them different from today's humans. Or does it? Now we get our first hint of the scientific past. Perhaps the animals were intentional creations of a former regime. Outstanding ED makes up for lack of OP. BGM is great, too.

Sending the kids out unsupervised makes sense when you think of it as yet another test, to weed out weaklings and dissenters. The powers that be want kids who are competent but not curious.
So kids submit a route plan for approval before they depart. If they stay on the approved path but still can't survive, their Cantus wasn't strong enough, and they would have had to be eliminated anyway. If they stray into an unauthorized, more dangerous area, then they're disobedient and the authorities would probably rather they die than come home. Worst summer camp ever. |
