And that indeed is Horo from Spice and Wolf. Someone just added the ribbons to make it resemble Ama's hat.

Looking for an old magical girl series of at least 7 to 10 years ago. The main girl character had this animal thing that could poof to a bigger size, like a balloon and the main girl could be carried but it took quite some effort to do so

There was also something with a portal that she and her friends crossed, don't remember where
There was also an evil-ish girl with purple hair that was trying to steal the MC's loveinterest

Aside from the fact that Kagome/Kikyou don't have a pet while Sango's cat Kirara doesn't pop up like a balloon and also has absolutely no problem carrying the whole gang around in the air and that Kikyou doesn't have purple hair - you're absolutely right!
