Which one is it?

Also, if it's really the start of a new trend, what's the natural progression? All-male teams of yaoi-bait? All female teams of yuri-bait? Or loli teams?

Chihayafuru showed us the way.

All-male teams of yaoi-bait?
An angsty spinoff starring Taichi and Arata.

Quote:
All female teams of yuri-bait?
Next up, Chihaya and Kana-chan lead the wacky highjinks.

Quote:
Or loli teams?
Followed by a coming of age story starring the little prodigy girl Chihaya met during the Queen preliminaries and her friends.

Just saw this on Tumblr: the box that came with Vol. 9

Actually I am a little confused: I think it is the DVD box since it says DVD but the image is from the manga and there are characters I don't recognize.

Spoiler for Large Image:

Finally finished the first season. No idea why it took me so long, considering this show is absolutely brilliant (so the second season is definitely deserved).

The only 'bad' thing is that the love triangle between Arata, Chihaya and Taichi never really went anywhere (although we've seen hints that Chihaya's love for Arata might not be completely one-sided).

So, they have to get 5 new members in the next season. They'll probably get them, though I'm sure it won't be easy.

Suddenly I want to graffiti Chihayayfuru all over the subway. I wonder how that would go over.

Chihaya manga train!

It looks pretty cool. I wonder what the karuta players who ride the train think of it all. ^^

Interview with Chihayafuru's production team

Two excerpts:
Quote:
One of the most amazing things about Chihayafuru is that you've been able to make karuta accessible to international fans. Were you ever concerned about whether or not overseas fans would be able to understand the series?

Asaka: We were actually kind of surprised that there were any people outside of Japan that understood it. Even for many Japanese people, the game of karuta is a very difficult thing to pick up and understand. We're thrilled and pleased that the show has found an audience abroad.
Quote:
In Japan, competitive karuta is not that popular of a sport. I imagine that one of the challenges in making the anime was [making] the sport look a lot cooler than it was. Was this hard creatively?

Asaka: Yeah, even in the world of Japanese sports, karuta is a very minor form of entertainment. When I started working on the series, I didn't know what the Hell it was either. I ended up going to watch a match to see what it was all about. That's when I really got to experience the sing-song reading of the poems and the movements and the dynamic way that people play the game. When I saw that, I thought, “wow, that's really cool!” I think when you go and see it for yourself, you realize just how cool it is. When we were making the series, we tried to bring that coolness directly to the screen in the most creative way possible.

"I didn't know what the Hell it was either." At least he's honest.

Asaka's right, the game is quite a bit different when you see it played live. It's astonishing how fast those kids can move.

It's interesting to observe the number of times karuta had appeared in other series since it first starred in Chihayafuru. Off-hand, I recall the game appearing in Rinne no Lagrange (first season) and also in Hyouka (school festival arc).

Of course, Asami Seto (Chihaya) also stars in Rinne (she plays "the-wan-is-a-lie" Lan), which may explain karuta's guest appearance in that show. Still, it's tempting to think that a single series may have sparked new interest in an obscure game. It may even have made last season's Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uto Koi — a series based on the hundred poems that inspired karuta — more feasible, at least from a distributor/broadcaster's point of view.

In any case, I'm looking forward to the second season.

Karuta's obscurity and lack of a large population of players makes sense of the relative insularity of the competitions depicted in the manga and anime, where the same players always seem to be competing against each other. It is not just dramatic license.

That means the rewards of playing are insular as well--not fame or fortune, but finally the respect of your opponents, and the pleasure of belonging together to the community of an obscure sport. Karuta allows its own kind of human relationship, one that has been wonderfully depicted in the manga and anime, quite apart from the romance.

I wonder if Chihayafuru's popularity will transform the sport? That would be an immense irony.

Hey, it worked for Go... Though to be fair, that was more popular to begin with.

I don't think I got more into Karuta because of Chihayafuru, but I definitely have grown an appreciation for the 100 poems because of the series and Uta Koi. I guess I am just Kana Chan.

Planning on visiting Omi Jingu when I am in Japan in December, so I hope that works out.

Well, the manga (Hikaru no Go) had one panel that depicting Sai as a merciless karuta player. Besides, mastering Go does not require the need to learn language. The memorization skill may help once awhile.
