They might have found the solution to the surpopulation of the planet in 2050.
The future wife will have nothing to say about that thought.
Seriously, this is pretty disturbing that someone could even think to marry a 2D character, he could have at least fall in love with a 3 D one or Tifa from FFVII, this would have not sound as insane as that

I seriously see myself in the vein of the baker from Chobits, should I live to see that day.

Anyway, that kind of ''union'' will not be legal ( if it become) now. There's still so much on the list before that...

oye... the baker from Chobits (sigh). But at least that's the AI=sentient conundrum.

This petition is more like: "Ah yes,.... I'd like to marry this napkin - I really like the doodle someone drew on it."

It was implied that the baker's wife from Chobits did have some sort of soul.

As a spectator, I really don't see the line between serious discussion and jokes in this thread anymore lol

As someone who draws and likes 2D alot, I can't really say I'm against the concept of marrying a 2D image. If its something I draw for myself, I can see that it would be a marriage that belongs to you. But marrying famous named characters and be shared by thousands of others, I can't grasp that concept lol

Exactly.. or at least the question was raised as in "A difference which makes no difference is no difference". There is literally no way to tell if the people around you are sentient or just amiable zombie-biobots ... so as long as anyone/anything you interact with passes your own version of the Turing Test - you have to assume or empathize that that "person" has the same internal sense of self that you do.

My take on the baker's wife was that, for him - she passed the Turing Test with flying colors.

Probably one of the main reason why he married her in the first place.

At this point in time, most people would be against it(heck, the thought of marrying someone other than a woman gives me the heebie jeebies). Although I'd like to keep an open mind especially when the 'persocom' scenario is brought into play..

And that is exactly what happens in Chobits. CLAMP did a superb job in executing this arc, with the persocom wife suffering from a malfunction which causes her to forget things. I personally take it as an allegory for person suffering from dementia.

Heh... maybe I spoke too soon with in this thread
(Although I posted here last 1 year ago, how time flies eh...)
Someone tossed this at me to confirm if this really is real and if it's legal.
Unfortunately, the reception was 'real enough', however I wouldn't really say it's legal and worth anything cept perhaps the man getting 'rights' on this characters from Konami?
Enjoy~

Story follows on in here
A little news on the ceremony in Guam (reception only was in Japan)
Trailer of the game itself
(With the way they promote this, is it any wonder vulnerable guys kinda prefer this over 'real life'?)

Ok, this doesn't make sense. How can someone get off from a cartoon? There's no reciprocal relationship, the cartoon has no feelings, and the list goes on. Geez, what's this world coming to?

Maybe this is the result of being socialized by harem girl characters.

I believe Madarame from Genshiken explained this issue best when Saki asked a similar question:

http://i45.tinypic.com/2a5d9tx.gif

Even if they're not real it's still possible to become attracted to an anime character. Further, a reciprocal relationship isn't required to love someone or something. If it were, there wouldn't be many examples of unrequited love. Of course that still doesn't mean marrying an anime character makes any sense. They're not real people, they only exist as scripted images. Thus are unable to enter into any kind of contract, as would be required for marriage. Now if someone were to develop a human level AI which interacts with the world through an animated avatar in the form of an anime character, that would be different.

Unrequited love between humans is one thing. Relationships between a guy/girl and and something that doesn't even move, that's not even alive and never was in the first place is something else entirely.

Despite my uber-matrix abilities it seems that I cannot dodge this topic.

I am fine with 2D until I can find a 3D who can accept my eccentricities. It doesn't really matter actually IMO, whom you marry or what you marry, it is perfectly alright to even marry a cat. It is always the same when others comment on your marriage, try to subvert/adulterate/kidnap/rape/<insert an action which you can do to a female> her, etc. It is handle it from your side that actually matters.

When all else fails, call the offending party the following in order :

1. Die.
2. The whole lot of you...die!
3. Rot in hell!
4. Shut up! Shut up!
5. Get out of my room!
6. Move, you old bitch!

All in all I don't think that this video is meant too seriously. But lets pretend it is for the sake of discussion.

This is besides the point. The question is not if a cartoon character can turn you on sexually but if you would want to marry one. It's not that it would have been normal if that guy had married his 3D-porn collection or had just been fallen in love with it.

It is also an important difference if someone doesn't love you or is principally not capable to.

We went through this a thousand times already but it's also besides the point. A real AI wouldn't be any different from a human in any important feature that drove those AI lovers away from humans in the first place.
