I like this series... but honestly the amount of 'good' negima fanfiction is lacking even by the usual 1% standards.

I've read maybe 1 good character based story, and like 3-4 entertaining crack stories.

There's just way to many SI/OC stories where they just so happen to end up at 3A in the class (worst clinch plot idea ever) or pointless yuri fluff that's well... fluff.

I know, but that's because most tend to not be very good to begin with when they start. But the 1% that is out there, is good. You have to admit that.

Most of them are AU, and some are Crossovers, but they are rather good in comparison to other stories out there.

I'm not much of a Negima fanfic reader. However, back in 2005, I did try my hand at writing one in the form of a short Xmas tale that focuses less on the crazy romance side of things and more on the idea of whether a wizard like Negi believes in the Santa Claus mythos. I had it online for some time, but sadly it's no longer around due to America Online getting rid of the storage space that its customers were allowed to use (which also affected a number of convention reports that I wrote). However, I did save the story, so it may show up again online.

A few notes about the tale:

1. The story was written based on my current knowledge of the series at that point (i.e. the first eight volumes of the manga plus a few pieces that I learned via followingf the raws that came out at the time).

2. There's a brief crossover near the end of the tale, but it's one that is quite understandable.

OC = original character... these have a propensity to be SI.

character driven fluff could be good but most isn't, it's similar to crack fic's where there's no real coherent idea's/plot. It's usually just a mishmash of what the author would like to see be it good or bad... though usually bad.

As for clinches, honestly i don't mind having extra students merged into 3-A they have the space for 3 more seats if estimates are correct of the class room size, but seriously do it well... integrate it more then 'LOL Ranma gets stuck as a girl and needs to attend a girls school' or 'mysterious OC kid lands at Mahora see how he blah blah blah blah blah' these are just examples of being lazy and of bad writing in general.

5 more. Class is 6 seats in width (or actually 3 of 2-seats in width), with 31 students it means that it's 6 x 6 for 36 seats with Evangeline occupying last row all for herself. It's pretty clear in some manga panels.

Or any other male in class changed in girl or not for that matter. There is Mahora jr high BOYS school on campus and all that other schools besides them! If you don't believe it check Ako club occupation - she is their soccer club manager - yes, BOYS soccer team, not girls (or at least If I Recall Correctly).

PS. As for recommendations http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4136905/1/ - "Reikai Sensei Kuwabara", Yu Yu Hakusho crossover (and some others), be wary of some crossover bashing ahead (not Negima or YYH) but it not big part of story. Second recommendation for "When Wizards Meet" yet, not sure if author will continue that good though, judging by his other fics... So I figured I'd take advantage of being awake this late with nothing to bother me and write. Probably not the wisest move, but oh well.

Tsukuyomi sighed blissfully, drawing yet another strange look from the healer. She didn’t really mind that though; people were always looking at her oddly. Thankfully she’d finally learned to accept it instead of letting it bother her. Being bored with the people around her was much simpler than being annoyed. When she’d let herself get annoyed was when the bodies started to pile up around her, and as much as she enjoyed killing, the lack of restraint would only work against demons. If she killed that many humans, people might start trying to do things to her instead of just staring.


She didn’t consider that a real problem, but for now, she was experimenting with the amount of human contact she could stand without going on some sort of rampage. It was a game of sorts that she had just recently developed.


Some days, it was only the knowledge that she was still playing the game that kept her from trying to kill the Shinmeiryuu swordsmen that spent far too much of their time staring at her. She could feel their eyes following her at all times, waiting for her to confirm what they could only suspect.


The looks themselves might not be annoying anymore, but all of the extra attention was trying her patience. She wanted to feel the warmth of their blood very badly, and soon, the gentle reminders that sometimes appeared in the back of her head and explained just how powerful a true Shinmeiryuu Master was wouldn’t be enough to hold her back.


“How did you say this happened?” The healer asked nervously.


Tsukuyomi blinked at the person who was magically stitching up her bleeding forearm. He was talking this time. That wouldn’t do. If he talked at her too much, she wouldn’t be able to resist the call of his blood, and she was still playing her game. Not to mention that he had a very grating voice that was sure to make her eardrums burst when he screamed, and she could tell by the way he used his magic that he wouldn’t put up any sort of a fight in the first place.


It was a shame he wasn’t female. Their bodies tended to be soft enough that Tsukuyomi could ignore any obvious failings they had as opponents.


“Oh, I tripped and landed badly on my knife,” Tsukuyomi lied chirpily. She did hope he wouldn’t ask anything else with that horrible voice of his—she disliked being forced to lie.


“I see,” he said, annoying his patient further. He was clearly recovering what little good sense he had, though, since he was quick to look back at Tsukuyomi’s arm instead of continuing to stare.


Her arm was still bleeding quite a bit. The blood wasn’t as warm as it had felt when she first sliced open her delicate skin, but it was still comforting.


She hadn’t yet decided whether or not making herself bleed was against the rules. Technically, she was a Shinmeiryuu swordswoman. The rules she’d outlined in her head clearly stated that she’d lose if she cut a member of the dojo outside of practice.


Did she lose, then? After all, even if the only blood shed was her own, she was still a student of the dojo, and the reasons behind the violence were the same as they would have been if she’d gone after another practitioner. What she was trying to restrain wasn’t the result, it was the motive that tended to lead—


Wait, why was that again?


Tsukuyomi frowned for a second, trying to remember why she wasn’t supposed to want to kill people. Wanting it usually led to killing, which was something she enjoyed.


Oh, but other people didn’t like it, so they responded by trying to kill her back. Especially Shinmeiryuu swordsmen, and most of them were stronger than her, since she was still in the beginning stages of her training. They would probably succeed in killing her back, which result in no more fun for her.


A light went off in Tsukuyomi’s head, and she remembered the better reason she had for restraint: if she killed people, the members of the Shinmeiryuu dojo would most likely take offense (because they were very strange like that), and then they would stop teaching her, and she needed the teaching to be stronger so she could kill people without worrying so much about the consequences. Thinking about the consequences always took the fun away. It was confusing and made her head hurt.


Recalling the reason she was bothering with the dojo in the first place made her feel much better about following the rules of her game and not killing the healer. If he continued to annoy her, all she had to do to avoid breaking the spirit of the game, if not the actual rules, was get stronger than anyone else so she could take his life without fearing repercussions.


That thought made her very happy indeed. Her frustrated frown vanished under the force of her grin. She started to hum.


He would heal her arm, and she would get stronger.


And then she could kill him.

Okay, that's not actually the end of this story, since it actually is meant to be a story, and not just an entertaining mess of words. It's the first part. Sort of. I guess it's a little short to be a part, but even though that's not the end of this story, this story isn't exactly planned to be long, so it probably qualifies as a part.

And there will be shades of Tsukuyomi/Setsuna in the next (and probably last) part. Just because I happen to like that pairing for strange, convoluted reasons.

It was cold.


When Tsukuyomi tried to remember what life was like before she discovered the addictive taste of blood, that was what came to mind. A constant, dull chill that never left, no matter what she did. It felt like the world was made entirely of ice.


At first, she didn’t know what was wrong—just that something wasn’t exactly right, and she wanted to fix it. The thing she came to know as being cold was horribly unpleasant.


She found out how to fix it when her mother cut herself chopping up food. Somehow, her mother failed to notice any pain in her hand until the blood that the knife caught flew through the air and landed on Tsukuyomi’s hand.
It was warm.


Tsukuyomi wanted that warmth more than anything else in the world. It was so very, very different from what she was used to; even the most stifling embrace had always felt cold to her. To know something as exquisite as this warmth was almost beyond her comprehension.


She could only wait a few hours before she needed to feel it again.


They were both asleep, so she didn’t have to worry about the problems that usually came with killing people. Her mother’s scream almost caused her some trouble, but she was very quick. The noise from both of them died down the instant before their hearts stopped.


Blood was splattered all across the room, decorating it very prettily.


And Tsukuyomi was on fire.


She left very quickly after that because people started coming into the house and yelling. They yelled more when they saw the bedroom. She didn’t particularly like yelling, and she was too dazed by the warmth to think about dealing with them appropriately, so she walked out the front door and let them have their yelling.
Her mother’s knife left with her.


The next few months were delightful. She had her knife, and she had countless creatures all around her the bled sweet heat. There were some busy days where she could actually forget that such a horrible thing as cold had ever existed.
But there were always people. They seemed to appear out of thin air sometimes just so they could steal her joy. And they always brought the cold with them. A few times, she made the mistake of brushing up against them. Each time, she would instantly lose the heat that her fun brought her, and she could never do anything about it. They were stronger than she was—even if she killed one of them, more would come.


Tsukuyomi stopped having fun. There were too many people, and the blood of small animals, which she could take down easily, wasn’t keeping her warm enough anymore. She needed her knife to taste human flesh.


That was easier said than done. The people who ventured out into the small corner of the woods she lived in were always well-trained and experienced. She was neither, and it was starting to cost her dearly.


She hadn’t wanted to be a swordsman. The thought of actually conforming to any discipline, even if it was one that would allow her to kill people more efficiently, bothered her. She wasn’t the sort of person that appreciated confinement of any sort.


To make matters worse, her training would be with other human beings. Human beings that it would be a very bad idea to kill.


Without the occasional training ‘accident’ Tsukuyomi was sure that she would have frozen to death. There was also the random skirmish with demons, where she could be as ruthless as she wanted and no one would bother complaining. That was it, though.


Was it any wonder, Tsukuyomi thought dolefully, that she took such pleasure in her own blood now? It was the only source of warmth she could rely on now.

By now, the healer was starting to look concerned. It made Tsukuyomi want to laugh, but she knew better than that; if she did anything out of the ordinary for her, the uneasiness the healer felt around her would lose out to his sense of duty as a medic. And if that happened, more people would start doing things to her instead of watching, and that was the last thing she wanted.


Though they’d be more than welcome to try to do things to her in a few years. It was just now that was a very bad time for any complications like that.


So Tsukuyomi sat still and let the annoying man be concerned. The way he was acting was annoying and very, very funny, but she could put up with it. However, the second she decided that she was bored with her little game she was going to take extreme pleasure in killing him.


Not that he was really her first choice for a victim. One of the more watchful instructors would be a much better pick. Her boredom with them was fading back into annoyance the longer she went without cutting into someone else’s flesh.


That was probably a bad thing.


“Sensei?”


The quiet voice made both of the infirmary’s occupants look up. A girl, about Tsukuyomi’s age, was standing by the door, a serious look on her face. The healer stepped away from Tsukuyomi, letting her arm fall to her side. He smiled politely at the new arrival, but something was off about his expression.


“Yes Setsuna-kun? What seems to be the problem?” His trembled a little.
Oh. So that was it. Another person that everyone looked at oddly. Good, at least she wasn’t the only one around that no one trusted. That would make occasionally breaking the rules of her little game much simpler.


“Tsuruko-sensei is going to be personally assessing some of the older students today. She has requested your presence in case something goes wrong.” The girl hesitated for a second, glancing at Tsukuyomi’s arm for a moment. “She refuses to begin until you arrive, Sensei.”


The healer sagged in such obvious relief that Tsukuyomi had to bite her lip to keep from laughing.


“As she should,” he said officiously, drawing himself back up to his unimpressive full height. “I can’t imagine who got it in their head to teach children such reckless techniques.”


He made to march out of the infirmary, but he jerked to a stop when he remembered Tsukuyomi. To her glee, that was enough to make his obnoxious sense of importance vanish, and the nervous man she was used to dealing with reappeared.


“Ah, Setsuna-kun… you are familiar with bandaging wounds, are you not?” The girl nodded sharply. “Then would you please help Tsukuyomi-kun with her arm? Since I should be leaving immediately, I can’t exactly finish healing her.” Setsuna nodded again, and the healer looked beyond relieved. “Good. Thank you Setsuna-kun.”


He left the room quickly without looking directly at either of them, and Setsuna walked over to the cupboard the pitiful man must’ve kept the bandages in. Tsukuyomi wouldn’t know, since her injuries were always the kind that required immediate magical attention.


The serious girl stepped in front of her and nodded at Tsukuyomi’s bleeding arm. “Can you lift your arm?”


Tsukuyomi smiled. “I can.”


Setsuna managed to stay quiet for almost a full minute before she snapped back with a response. “Well will you?”


“That depends.”


“On what?”


Tsukuyomi leaned back and tried to focus on something besides the warmth of the blood on her arm. Something told her it simply wouldn’t do to be distracted right now. “On how much you’re willing to tell me about the way he looks at you.”


That was probably the wrong thing to say, if Setsuna’s suddenly defensive expression was anything to go by. Tsukuyomi didn’t really care, but if the other girl’s reaction meant that she wasn’t going to find out what was making the dear healer so afraid, she’d have yet another thing annoying her.


“He doesn’t,” Setsuna finally said. “Your arm?” She reached out her hand, the obvious threat in her eyes making Tsukuyomi stick her arm out reluctantly. As obnoxious as the healer was, she was at least used to his touch. Other people’s—they were equally cold, but painfully so without the familiarity.


She wished for the hundredth time that learning swordsmanship didn’t require being around so many people. When she could finally leave, she was going to make sure that she was never forced to be around so many of them ever again.


Setsuna didn’t touch her immediately. She stared at the injury for a few seconds. No doubt she was realizing it was self-inflicted, Tsukuyomi thought fondly. She wondered if the girl would react the same way the healer did—she hoped so. Someone who scared the healer so badly deserved to have a few rules broken in her name.


But Setsuna barely blinked. She just shook her head and grabbed Tsukuyomi’s wrist.


And that was when Tsukuyomi thought that she could think of a very good reason for the healer to avoid looking as Setsuna. There was something different about this girl. Terrifying, really, if she allowed herself to feel terror.


She didn’t, though. She felt…


Exhilarated.


Setsuna’s touch burned. It was hotter, by far, than anyone’s blood she had ever spilt.


And that was just the girl’s skin.


Tsukuyomi fought to keep herself from hyperventilating at the thought while Setsuna carefully bandaged her bleeding forearm. If that was just from skin contact, what would it be like to feel Setsuna’s blood against her skin?


Just how much would—


But Setsuna pulled away before she could finish the hazy fantasy, and the cold came back in a fierce wave.


“That should hold,” Setsuna said quietly. “If it doesn’t, you can always come back.”


“Right.” No, she definitely wouldn’t be coming back. Not after feeling something like that. She needed to go out and kill something before she spoiled herself.


For the first time, she felt a horrible, desperate need to hold herself back from killing someone she wanted. The desires were already eating at her; taunting her with the memory of the way Setsuna’s hand felt on her blood—and arguing about what that meant the best course of action was.


Tsukuyomi stood up shakily, and, going breathless with the temptation, avoided brushing against Setsuna through sheer force of will as she walked out the door. She couldn’t kill the other girl now any more than she could assault the healer. She would get caught, ruining all of the future fun she could have, and wouldn’t it be more fun anyway when they were both stronger? It wasn’t just killing she liked; the thrill of the chase was also fun.


And this way she could wait and think about the warmth—that blazing heat that no one but Setsuna possessed. She would wait, and anticipate the coming battle.


Because there would be one. No matter what, she would fight Setsuna, and she would feel that hot blood spill all over her.


It might take a while—certainly longer than she would’ve liked, since she wanted to kill Setsuna now—but Tsukuyomi could wait.


At least, that’s what she told herself. Really though, she had never been good at being patient.

This is kind of an aimless story that I wrote because I like Tsukuyomi as a character for some odd reason, and for even odder reasons, I like her interaction with Setsuna. So, I decided to explore. Just because. Hope it at least makes some sense, even if it's sort of pointless.

Not bad. I was confused about when this was set, but I'll leave that alone.

These I'm posting after they've been set up, or before they'll be set up. I'm in desperate need of reviews for this story.

Fort Keithan was not much of a surprise for the party. Built out of wood and stone at the base, it was five squared, with a round tower at the end of each section. There were no tents, but buildings at the walls, not built for housing many men at first glance. There were two buildings for the soldiers, and smaller ones to house logistical men. The storehouse wasn't the largest, but according to some old blueprints that their Russian fighter recalled, this fort was likely to have underground tunnels for safe movement and storage places. That could explain the buildings' height. The headquarters for the Fort Commander was the largest building, built sideways and only had one floor level.

Inside, there were nervous men, in commoners' clothing, and holding some weapons, most likely those of their families, perhaps passed down through the generations. They numbered in the hundreds, but it wasn't an impressive number of hundreds. Some were standing on the walls, having bows, but most stood around talking to each other in the center of the fort. Once the party arrived at the fort and passed through the gate, the men stopped chatting and turned to see who it was. Neither side was impressed by the appearance of things.

Nodoka was the first one to make a move, namely get down from her brown horse, and the other riders did the same. "We need to get some stables for our mounts." Nodoka said quietly for her party to hear, and almost immediately, Boris shouted at the conscripts to take their horses (and Caribou) to where the stables could be. Once that was settled, the bookworm headed for the HQ of the fort. "First thing we need to do is to see what we have. I'd much like a full check up on supplies and men we have. I don't know about you, but I'm not one to head into danger without knowing what we got first."

"Understood." Rev'keth responded, taking a different turn from them whilst the humans went into the headquarters of the fort.

"That's supposed to be the Witch?" One of the conscripts asked another. "Doesn't look much."

"Looks can be deceiving." His comrade answered him. "You know the Rakshasan kids that do have magic? Those are monsters on their own."

"But she's not like them." the first retorted. "Those monsters aren't human. She's supposed to have magic, and yet she's not all high and mighty like the magi we used to have."

"You mean before they were wiped out by the Gith Emperor?"

"Quiet you. This 'Emperor' doesn't exist. He's just something the Githyanki made up to keep us in check. They all murdered our magi, because they were jealous."

"Shut up, both of you." A third talker joined in, with harsh whispers. "There is a Gith Knight here. He hear you talking like that, you'll be strung up, no matter what the Witch says about it."

"I hear he's from the underground. Been out to space, stuff like that."

"Who cares? Just don't let him catch you talking bad about the Emperor."

I'm kinda touched I've been recommended in the crossovers about Disgaea: Gehenna's Holy Queen.

I swear I'll get to updating, as I'm mining for ideas for how to proceed with my general plot (as in, I know what I want but not how to go about it). But for now, why don't I send to you the two definite KonoSetsu fanfics that aren't fail?

Oooh, nothing beats Egg Belly when it comes to KonoSetsu.

Now, this part has yet to come up yet, but I need to get it out of my head so I can start on chapter 33.

It has been only about a day since she was rescued by her new dad and his companions from the Illithids. It was really close that the humanoids with squid-like heads were going to have her brain for dessert. According to the other villagers, the Illithids had a very bad history with the Githyanki to begin with, and such, the Gith would attack them on sight.

She started to miss the company of her friends yet again. She was cut off from her own home-world, with Negi down on Earth and her more well seasoned friends and nakama stuck where they couldn't follow, and also her new band which was formed for her when she started her travels on the alien planet. Hina, her new sister through adoption, Boris, her bodyguard and general military commander if need be. Heck, even the stupid Raydan, who wanted to buy her dagger, would be appreciative to see now.

"Nodoka?" A female voice asked her gently and the bookworm saw Efromm, who had been part of the rescue party to find her. "Could you come outside for a moment?"

The purple-haired girl decided to do so, and once outside, she found the five major leaders of the rescue party; Her own dad Ashracai, Efromm the Golden-haired, Rufus the human Lich from across the western seas, her fellow adopted sister Rad'na, and Fashtar, the Gith man responsible for her being on their homeworld to begin with.

"Nodoka, given the events that has happened to you recently and generally what is to come," Ashracai started, stepping forward. "We've decided."

"And no, you do not get to argue about this." Rad'na scolded her human sister in case she was gonna argue.

"We're going to teach you Vertoth." Fashtar finished for the whole group.

"Vertoth?" Nodoka echoed the word.

"The Gith martial art." Efromm explained for her. "It's the combat style that we use in battle, arena fights and also entertainment."

"But what did bring this on?" Nodoka had to ask them genuinely. "I know that the events that happened to me here is reason enough, but why do I need to practice it?"

"Nodoka..." Rufus started calmly and almost sad. "...with all due respect, you almost died a few times here already."

"We can't really have that," Fashtar continued on that subject. "I did swear to your friend princess Asuna that I would keep you safe. And if you died, because of something similar to the Illithids, well, I don't want my bones crushed and my spine torn out. I may sound selfish, but I also speak on behalf of Negi-kun for this."

"Mm-hm," Rad'na followed as well on the argument. "We know your affection with that young man and frankly, I'd like to see that reunion if possible."

"So we decided really, using all those reasons, to teach you the basics of Vertoth." Ashracai spoke up again, him sounding the most serene with this. "You'll be learning all three aspects of it, the unarmed, the armed and the psionic part of it. We'll also show you how to use magic like we do."

"There's just one question left." Nodoka spoke up after hearing all that. "I got no natural talent when it comes to combat or magic for that part. How am I going to learn all of this in a short time as you have put it, apparently?"

"We know you don't have talent, Nodoka," Fashtar answered that one. "So we intend to make it up with sheer skill instead. Humans are born naturals when it comes to fighting, by the way."

"Now you better get some rest and some food, because we'll start as soon as possible." Ashracai stated and the five of them went off somewhere, leaving the bookworm to mentally prepare herself for the training to come.

This has yet to come up yet, in about a few chapters, and it's very confusing at this point, but my defense is, I joined this forum too late to make sense.

As for Vertoth, I have to admit that while I'm staying true to the Githyanki style of living (mostly), I have nothing to go on with that style, just the name. Someone named Dunamin was good enough to help with the basics of how the Githyanki behave, and also what they're able to do with their psychic powers yet the man was lazy enough to leave out how the techniques work, what they do in combat in a 1-on-1 fight or even what Vertoth is based on.

Only one of them I would happily second as recommended good read. One of my favorite crossovers so far, not perfect but merging of two so different universes is made very carefully and it don't have serious case of "all the same, only with sparkles", nor guest char overshadowing previous main character. Others are... not so good, especially "International magic", which have serious case of stupids... Actually I would go as far as to recommend to ignore "International magic" and don't try to read it.

If you're reading this, then you probably understand what I ask of you. Even though it is accidental and you may not have meant to do it anyway, you are still married to my daughter Theodora. And with being part of royalty, there are obligations.

I can almost sympathize with you willing to be divorced as soon as possible, but the law of Hellas marriage state that one must be married for a full year before a divorce can occur. And as the Imperial Family of Hellas, we must stand as a prime example for it.

It is too much to ask a boy of doing this, but this is somewhat bound by law as well, where I must admit I have neglected to change with my time as the current emperor.

Theodora should know what I'm talking about, should she be reading this as well, so therefore, I must request of you two children to go on your... Honeymoon, I suppose the word is.

Too much to ask of a child, but it needs to be taken care of. Many apologies regarding this. Talk to Aristodemus for traveling affairs and feel free to give him a good beating, I suppose.

-This is basically my take on a pairing no one so far has dared to do, so far: The NegixTheo-ohime-sama pairing. Put basically, if you've read past chapter 20 (or if you haven't, I'll tell anyway), Negi and Theo-sama got accidentally married to one another, thanks to a mentioned-behind-the-scenes law on the place where they got married that said that it was okay for children to drink alcohol. I've made up those laws for the Hellas people, since no one has bothered to dive into those waters before me, so I thought: "What the hell?" and jumped in anyway.

-Martialus is a fictional name I came up with for Theo-sama's father. I give no describtion to how he looks, despite him showing up just once so far.

-Before you go into flames regarding the honeymoon, I must say that I've done the math on this one.

Spoiler for Math for Negi's age at the time.:

Ala Alba left the Magic World on September 7th, granted it is September in the Old World or they're still in August. Now, Negi and Theo leave for their Honeymoon on February 24th, 2004. I did the homework on that and that is 6 months in between.

Take all the days in between, if we go from September 7th, to February 24th, we get to up to 177 days.

Now take those days, and then add in 4 hours spent in Eva's resort every, single, day, and we end up with 885 days in total.

That's the amount of time that Negi's spent training and being at Mahora since leaving the Magic World. And granted that he is 10 at the time he leaves MM (I strongly support that myself), Negi would be around 12-13 biologically speaking.

-It would feel awkward, I know, however, Negi is only a kid by definition of Age here. One of the reasons that a lot of girls like him, I suppose.

-There are two countries I know of that has an age limit of 13 for people to have *ahem*, so guess which one the other country is, save Japan?

The prologue to an eventual KonoSetsu multi-chapter story...

No matter where Konoka went, Setsuna would always be her guardian...after all, duty always won over love. Even if that duty meant marrying into a family to protect the world's wards against destruction and watching the one you love give herself to another.

Love and Duty Come in Chains

Love and Duty Come in Chains

“I do.”

Those two words turned everything that had been hazily dreaded into something true.

“I do.”

There. It’s done. Setsuna closed her eyes. Even so, she couldn’t watch.

She couldn’t watch Konoka kiss that man. It was her one moment of weakness. She won’t have another.

She couldn’t, not for Konoka’s sake.

“If anyone present can show just cause as to why this couple may not be legally joined together, you should now declare it, or hereafter hold your peace.”

Setsuna kept her eyes open when Konoka looked at her. She stared straight back into Konoka’s searching, deep eyes in that pause. Stared, then looked away, silent.

Konoka didn’t look at Setsuna again.

“Kyo Wallward and Konoka Konoe, I pronounce you husband and wife, uniting the House of Wallward and Konoe in holy matrimony.”

“Together, may you find the strength to destroy the evils that plague our world and your Houses.”

How wonderful, Setsuna thought as she watched the married couple walk down the aisle surrounded by the Wallward guards towards the church door, that Konoka could manage to fulfill her duty to her family and yet still find a man who she genuinely cared about.

How wonderful.

“Setsuna, if you accept, I have another job for you.”

“I will, Headmaster.”

“I haven’t told you what it is yet.”

“What job I do doesn’t matter to me. I live to serve.”

Konoemon grunted, his white brows furrowing until they met above his nose as he peered at Setsuna, a painfully understanding quality in his stare. “As head of the Konoe family, I’m assigning you to guard our family heir. You are removed from the employ of Mahora Academy. Now, you are an employee of the Konoe.”

“Yes, sir.”

The old man watched her, then slid an officially sealed envelope across his desk. “This is my letter to the Wallward House, telling them that you are my employee and not theirs.”

“Yes, sir.”

“So they cannot ever dismiss you from Konoka’s service.”

Setsuna paused, her red eyes flashing over with a brief emotion before returning to their cool glassiness. “Yes, sir.”

“You will be her personal guardian. Even against her own desires or inclinations, you must protect Konoka at all costs. Let the Wallwards mumble about the Konoe dishonouring them, I don’t care. Your only duty is Konoka.” Konoemon stopped speaking and watched her. “Do you have any objections to your duty?”

Setsuna rose and put her fists together, Yuunagi held out horizontally before her as she bowed deeply.

“No, sir.”

“Se—Setsuna-san, I will be going out this afternoon to inspect the wards again.”

“Yes, ojou-sama.” Setsuna bowed, her black hair falling forward in a dark wave, blending into the black of her suit. She still dyed it, even though she had forgone the contact lenses ever since…ever since. “I will arrange for your security detail.”

“Alright,” Konoka said quietly.

She had stopped asking Setsuna to call her Kono-chan. It surprised Setsuna how much it hurt, each time she said the title, and not hear Konoka protest. Ridiculous, she knew, since she was the one who always insisted on it in the past. Her constant refusals never hurt until Konoka stopped asking. But it still sent a jolt through her heart, and she wished that she could blurt it out. It wouldn’t be that hard. Kono-chan. Kono-chan.

In the end, she couldn’t. Now…she wasn’t sure anymore why she couldn’t. Because it wasn’t the proper thing to do. It wasn’t the right thing to do.

Setsuna no longer cared why.

Because it was too late.

“Why are you doing this? Do you have some masochistic warrior thing, or are you just too much of a coward to fight for her?” Asuna slapped her, hard. Setsuna let her, not that she was admitting to the masochistic comment but because she deserved it. And Asuna had every right to be angry. She was the one who heard Konoka crying every night, after all.

“How can you just let her go?”

“Because he does make her happy.”

“She loves you!”

Setsuna laughed hollowly.

“I know.”

By the time Setsuna realized that she could have fought, that she could have tried for both their happiness, it was too late.

To the side, a servant bowed. “Lady Wallward, shall I fetch—”

“There’s no need. Setsuna-san will take care of me—of my security. All decisions will be in her hands.”

“But…very well, my lady.”

Konoka found and captured Setsuna’s gaze easily, her brown eyes still entirely trusting but missing that innocent, happy aura. “I trust her with my everything.”

“Secchan? Can…can you please stay with me? Stay with me, forever.”

“I promise.”

“B…Because I don’t think that I’m strong enough to do it on my own. I want my friend to be there with me, because…you make me stronger, Secchan.”

“I promise that I’ll always protect you.”

Despite anything Mana or Asuna said to her later, Setsuna didn’t lie then. Because she promised to protect Konoka’s body, her life and those of anyone else Konoka cared about. She never promised to protect Konoka’s heart. Because Setsuna knew.

She knew that she would be the one breaking it.

Konoka’s voice cut through Setsuna’s thoughts to capture her attention immediately. “Is something wrong, S—Setsuna-san?” One of her hands dropped, as if she had raised it towards Setsuna’s shoulder then let it fall short, empty.

Setsuna bowed her head, letting her loose hair fall to shield her face.

Everything.

“Nothing, Ojou-sama.”
