Well, as far as I know, Miyamura-san is battling Graves' disease, not cancer. Here is her blog.

Besides battling her illness, she had been involved in the sound effects portion of the Loveless anime.

Apparently they're going to change Soryu to Shikinami in the movie, although I don't know if it's been confirmed. I don't really see what people have got their panties in a bunch over, since it doesn't matter. Asuka's still going to be Asuka, the same insufferable (albeit hot) bitch she's always been. Well, the Shikinami is a badass ship in her own right. Besides, to me, the Sohryu part is an in-reference to 02's fight on top of those aircraft carriers in the original. However, if they changed the "Asuka" part, I think we have an issue here.

Personally I don't like that combination of Capatin Shikinami, rather than just Shikinami... i don't really think that giving her a rank and thus separating her from other children is all that great... And a combination Captain Shikinami just sounds incredibly silly and retarded.

Well, Shikinami-tai'i does need some getting used to. But, giving Asuka a rank has the connotation that she got it through "unconventional" methods. Heck, I personally find her education qualifications far fetched in the original. A Uni graduate, and you can stand being in a high school classroom?

I do not mind much the change of the name, i am more concerned if Miyamura is gonna voice Asuka in the end. It would seem really..odd if it is not her.

I'm fairly confident that Miyamura-san will return to voice Asuka. She was well enough to voice Larxene recently. Hope she won't have to use THAT voice for Asuka.

Uni graduate, at least doesn't sound as silly as Captain Shikinami. For me this combination sounds extremely weird and stupid.

Of course if they keep Asuka and her relationship with Shinji in tact in rebuild i think it would eventually went be forgotten as its Asuka and her character that matters rather than the name no mater how idiotic it sounds. Though i think majority will ignore the whole Shikinami thing and call her Sohryu instead. Decade is rather long period to get used to things.

Personally I doubt there will be Asuka/Shinji in this one... Probably no kiss either and the sleeping before the angel fight will probably be changed so that Asuka sleeps in a different side of the same room.

Well, just looking at the things they are trying to cover and amount of time it is doubtful that they will give her that much of depth as in anime.

Most probable victim - her relationship with Shinji, which will probably will regress to Sadamoto's manga state where they do not have anything more between them than being roommates. This also decreases Asuka's character depth in a sense, because the conflict between her adulthood and childhood was reflected in a conflict between her feelings for Kaji and Shinji, but as we see from Sadamoto's manga's example, taking out her relationship with Shinji and leaving her crush for Kaji, only makes her a silly schoolgirl without giving any real depth as there is no conflict to look at.

So if they will take away the complicated Shinji/Asuka stuff (and it is likely, as complicated things need time to establish - luxury that they may not have in this movie) they should decrease her gaga moments over Kaji as well, as standalone it does nothing but make her character look silly.
