Here's a few off the top of my head that have little to no ecchi
Space operas, SDF Macross (30+ ep) Banner of the Stars series (3 season, 13 per season) Moretsu Pirate (more on the yuri bent) just regular sci-fi, Full Metal Panic (2 season + 1 sidestory)

Little to no ecchi long running sci fi?
For some reason the very first thing that comes to mind is Shangri-la. I enjoyed the series quite a bit, but definitely not to everyone's tastes.... Hmm... most of the series I know like this are either "real world fiction" or else fantasy settings. Would either of those work?

No problem, if you just want 20+ ep series without the usual ecchi or fanservice, there's a lot in either the romance or sci-fi category but rarely in both. It would help others recommend stuff to you if you list similar animes you watched before and wanted more as sci-fi is a broad category.

Here are some 26-episode science-fiction series that meet the no ecchi requirement, though the protagonists in a couple of them are children or tweens: Noein and Dennou Coil. The age of the characters doesn't detract from the quality of the story-telling. The first is out-of-print, but you can find used sets for a reasonable price. Coil is only available in fansubs.
For an off-beat science-fiction story, you might try Nakashima Kazuki's Oh! Edo Rocket. (He wrote the scripts for Tengan Toppan Gurenn Lagaan and Kill la Kill as well.) It's set in 1843 Edo, but the characters have TVs and use the Internet. The premise concerns political repression and space travel. Ghost Hound is more mystical than sci-fi, but it does rely on a mix of psychiatry, neuroscience, and mysticism. It's by Shirow Murasame whose other credits include the Ghost in the Shell spinoffs with a script by the excellent Chiaki J. Konata. This was Production I.G's 25th Anniversary show. Shirow also collaborated with I.G on Real Drive, which you might also find appealing. You might also take a look at Planetes, a story about space trash-collectors.

Sci Fi is not really my thing but if it is action/romance you want then how about the following:
Seirei No Morbito Zetsuen no Tempest Berserk Fate/Stay Night and prequel Fate/Zero Inuyasha Mai HiME Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom Senjou no Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles Shinsekai Yori If you don't mind pure romance, I would recommend to give White Album 2 a go.

I'll second Crest/Banner of the Stars and add Space Battleship Yamato 2199.
I'll also tentatively second Full Metal Panic and add Macross Frontier. They both have quite a bit of general fan service and the occasional ecchi bit here and there, but neither one would generally be classified as an ecchi title and they're both on my all time favorites list. |
