I was inspired by ffcompendium's name origins section and the little addition at the end of Episode 26 by Static-Subs when I was thinking of doing this.

Basically what we'll do is just find a name in the two series and find the origin of the name.

Anyway, I'll start with what I can immediately think of.

Annan: I think it's suppose to be Annam, an archaic name for Vietnam used by Imperial China and the french.

Artai: Altai. An area where China, Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan meet. In Otome, the country appeared as a combination of both Russia and China.

Searrs: ...Let's just say I'll never look at the Sears Department store the same way again...(Okay, I don't know if Sears is just an American thing or not, someone help me out on this)

Jipang: Cipangu. A medieval european (don't know which) word used to describe Japan before they had any contact.

Jipang/Jipanu is considered a "pop culture" name/term for Japan nowadays...

The Cipangu thing... is really of Chinese origin.

Some more useless information:

カルデア - Chaldean age was the last period of Babylonian Empire

Shiho Huit - Huit is 8 in french - and the number 8 is almost a spiral.

Erstin Ho - her name is an anagram of Holstein

菊川 means Kikukawa, but 菊 is a kanji for chrysanthemum

藤野 means Fujino, but 藤色 (fujiiro) means light purple (almost Viola)

Wind Bloom - A translation of MH Mashiro's family name, Kazahana (風花), though the actual literal translation is wind flower.

Lutecia Romulus and Lutecia Remus - In Roman myth, Romulus and Remus are the twin brothers who founded the city of Rome. An arguement between the 2 over who had the support of the gods to rule the city ended in Romulus killing Remus and naming the city "Rome" after himself. Lutecia is from Lutetia, a town in Roman Gaul which is the ancestor of the present-day city of Paris.

3 more (one obvious and two indirect):

風花真白 means Kazahana Mashiro, 風(kaze)=wind, 花(hana)=flower(bloom), 真白(mashiro)=true white (Blanc in french)

日暮 means Higurashi, one of the common words with the second kanji is 夕暮れ (yuugure) evening, and Soir is evening in french

真田 means Sanada (plait), but these two kanji can be readable as "true field" also. Reverse it, and you get Steinberg (rocky mountain) in german

Modiri's (which means green as far as i know) gem is green.

Aoi (which means blue) is given a blue rose by Chie.

The Five Columns - Obviously from the Five Pillars of Islam. One of the Five Pillars is called Salat, like Sala Gallagher, the first column. Other connections to Islam that the Columns have is that Maya Bryce is very Muslim in appearance and her robe is quite similar looking to the appearance a djinn (English word: Genie) has in popular culture.

I noticed the thing about the Five Pillars of Islam, and I found it funny since I believe that Nao may be the absolutely least Islamic character ever, and yet is one of the Pillars (They're Pillars, not Columns, gorramnit). I know it doesn't mean anything, but it made me chuckle.

Meister is obviously means 'Master' when translated from German to English.

Wow this thread has been dead for a while. Anyway heres some name origins for the Aswad.

Rad = A unit of measurement for radiation dose.
Lumen = A unit of measurement for luminous flux in the SI metric system.
Gal = A unit of measurement for acceleration in the CGS metric system, abbreviated from Galileo and named after Galileo Galilei.
Dyne = A unit of measurement for force in the CGS metric system. It is also a pun on the kanji 大 (dai/tai/oo) meaning big or great (in the context of size), which explains his size.

Edit:

Tomoe Marguerite - A tomoe is a Japanese abstract comma-like shape. Her overall hairstyle combines with her face to make the tomoe shape and the earring that holds the Cursed Obsidian to her ear is also shaped like a tomoe.

Nina Wáng: Nina means girl (女 (onna) in Japanese). Wáng is written as 王 (can also be romanised as Wong or Wang) in Chinese and it means king. Combine the 2 in Japanese and you get 女王 (Joou), meaning Queen. Hence, Nina Wáng is the real queen.

Yayoi Alter, Chie Hallard, Natsuki Kruger: Alter, Hallard and Kruger for their phonetic similarities to Outa, Harada and Kuga, respectively, which are their surnames in My-HiME.

I've read at SA that her name is literally translated as "Summer Tree" in Chinese, but it's unknown if her Japanese creators meant this.

How would you get a Chinese meaning for Natsuki? Her name's not written in kanji. In Japanese you could get that meaning but since there's a lot of ways those three syllables could be expressed with kanji it's impossible to say what they intended, if anything.

if you input "natsuki" with the language bar that windows have and do space, it would give you 夏樹, which means "summer tree" in chinese

some translation groups also translated なつき into 奈月 or 夏姫

夏姫 is probably what sunrise actually wants since it means "summer princess" (the hime thing), but a lot people are used to 夏樹 since (i think) it is the first translation used

Like I said, I don't think Sunrise 'wants' anything since they deliberately wrote her name in hiragana but it goes to show how many ways it could be interpreted.
Edit: And I recognize that a Chinese translation has to pick something but I wouldn't read too much into it.
