Hatoyama to decide on relocation of U.S. military base by May

Asked how he assesses current Japan-U.S. ties, Okada said during a regular press conference, ''There's no change in that the situation is tough. But I don't think it's like a situation in which they (the ties) will collapse.''

The issue has emerged as a central problem between Japan and the United States since Hatoyama's Democratic Party of Japan launched a coalition government in September with a pledge to reexamine the realignment plan of U.S. forces in Japan.

Expectations are growing among people in Okinawa that the government will seek to relocate the facility outside the prefecture in line with the DPJ's stance prior to the Aug. 30 House of Representatives election.

All I can say is that he better did. I can suggest a place. Knock down Haneda. Move all Tokyo-bound flights to Narita. Or the other way about. It's a hassle to fly from Kansai to Haneda, then take 2 hr to Narita just to fly to North America.

They'll need to take more land for the runways then, IMHO - unless air traffic from Haneda virtually collapses. Airplanes can't be jammed onto runways and the airspace without a lot of planning and equipment. Given the types of land in Japan overall and the experiences the government has had, that land grab will take a long time and will probably fail.

I say take away Disneyland. Hong Kong already has one, and I heard that there is a chance that 2 will be built in China. Too many Disney resorts out there.

Hatoyama nixes Futemma relocation to Guam, eyes alternative Japan site

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama indicated Saturday he has given up the idea of relocating the U.S. Marine Corps' Futemma Air Station in Okinawa to Guam, a remark that means the government will seek alternative sites in Japan as no other overseas location for hosting the U.S. military base is being considered.

On the request by the Social Democratic Party, a junior coalition partner of Hatoyama's Democratic Party of Japan, that all Futemma facilities be moved to Guam, the premier questioned the idea in a recording for a radio program.

''It looks as though having everything at Futemma transferred to the U.S. territory of Guam is unrealistic in light of the deterrence'' provided by the U.S. forces, Hatoyama said.

Some new fallout from this attempt:

1. Canada started to do full-body patdowns temporarily. It's too early to say if this will continue or be carried over elsewhere perhaps. I'm also not sure if this will actually catch those binary explosives if the individual chemical components are well hidden.

2. TSA now has a rule (check the bottom of the statement) that in the last hour of a flight, passengers cannot get up, access carry-on luggage or have any personal stuff on their laps. No idea if this means no personal electronics use either, but I would guess that they would be limited as well.

Yes, because a terrorist smart enough to slip explosives past security is clearly incapable of circumventing such measures by going to the bathroom an hour and a quarter before the end of the flight.
