PS2 problems

My friend's friend just left the country and left behind a crapload of things and along with all that stuff was a scph-30000 PS2 that was modified and she doesn't have any use for it so its mine now.
Only thing is that I dunno what kind of mod it uses nor whats wrong with it. I'm thnking that its a swap method chip(along with some games, it came with an Action Replay disc and some other DVD which I guess has a big TOC in it).
The problem with the the PS2 is that it won't read any PS2 games(backups nor originals), and no backup PSone while Original PSone games and any DVD movies works.

I know a place in my area that will do installation for a good price but I'm worried about the condition of the PS2 which I doubt replacing the chip will fix.

It just seems that the lense is worn out due to the heavy swapping and
bad media usage from the prevoius user.
Try to place it in a vertical position firstly and see if a original disc works,
if it doesn't then clean the lense and see if it help.
If it still doesn't work, take it to the shop and tell them to adjust the lense
or replace the whole laser unit, might be expensive thou,
while they're soldering a chip on it.

Question about the PS2

Hello everyone,

Just a quick question I got her about the Sony PlayStation 2;

I live in Canada so actually, I got a PS2 (NTSC U/C) and I would like to get some japanese game to play on my system and they seems to be rated *NTSC J*...

I know that when you wanna play (example) US/C games on a UK/FR ps2 system, you need a converter from NTSC to PAL (format) but I would like to know if I need some kind of converter to play japanese ps2 games on my US/C ps2 system.

I I dont think so... because it seems to read the same format ; NTSC but I just wanna be sure, so that's why I ask

Thanks to help me out.

What do you mean ?
Are you talking about TV standards or
about the region coding of ps2 games ?

In case of tv standard, nope ntsc tv are uses ntsc signals,
so you won't need a converter there.
Only if you want to play pal games, you might need one,
since i don't think NA tv have rgb input anymore.

As for region coding, you need to either mod yor console
or buy a JPN or ASIAN machine.

If the PS2 will boot PS1 games, you can make it boot the Independance Exploit. This will allow you to load games using an IDE hard drive and the network adapter. Please feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss this any further.

Both US and Japan use NTSC. The voltage is also the same, so you could import a Japanese PS2 and run it without any problems in the US/Canada, I think.

However, as pointed out, a PS2 is region protected. A "U/C" model PS2 will NOT play "J" games, without hacking your PS2 (=modchip).

PS. You should have probably created a new thread for this, as this one is a year old.
