Volume 7 arrived today - a nice surprise, I wasn't expecting it for another week at least. Looking forward to reading it, although we have already seen two of the three stories in other forms.

Interestingly this one didn't come with a dust jacket.

Mine should be coming in on Monday...

I bet Yen finally gave up on making crappy dust jackets... or the Holo model couldn't get this outfit... honestly, this IS the one that I wanted to see the dust jacket for.

I'm wondering if the sales numbers were showing them the dust jacket wasn't helping, so they cut costs (especially after the "I gots human ears and wolf ears" faux pas complaints about the last volume, something a few seconds in 'shopping would have prevented).

As a side note, I am unsure if that was corrected in subsequent prints, but I do know they did not even bother to reply to me... that was the first time I never got a response to a concern or question directed toward them.

Well, I will email them on Monday after mine comes and ask them about it.

Well, my copy came sans DJ as well.

An inquiry has been placed to customer service... I just want Yen to be consistent... and not bring them back next volume or worse several volumes later.

Well, I got a response from Hachette regarding the whole dust jacket issue involving S&W 7.

They said "ISBN 9780316229128 is for Spice and Wolf, Vol. 7 in a trade paperback edition. Trade paperbacks do not have jacket covers."

I am still awaiting for their response as to the change from DJs to not.

Sorry for the double post.

Kind of an amusing sidestep of the intent of your question -- they simply didn't address the change in format. I'm betting the experiment in crossing the streams into general young adult / teen fiction flopped (or more likely, was never handled well in the first place). Young adult/teen fiction is full of vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, and other oddities underlying romance, etc.

Well, the other reason could be that, after this many volumes, the 7th volume itself is unlikely to attract new fans that the first six volumes weren't or aren't still able to do. Once someone is hooked on the series, the picture on the cover will mean less to them because they're already used to the illustrations in the book itself. And for people who aren't yet hooked, they're going to want to start with Book 1 anyway (and it still has the other cover).

(Not to mention, as the physical bookstore becomes less important, the picture on the cover begins to matter less.)

So yeah, at this point, I think they're far enough into the series that the benefits of the alternate cover are probably minimal.

I agree with both of you on your points... I do especially love their avoidance of my question... of course I did ask in a round-about-way, but still...

I was also less vague the second time, so we will see.

Also, it is better than the last time when they took the approach of ignoring my questions about Volume VI DJ... and yes, I was very nice in the way I asked the question.

Still no response as to the dust jacket issue.

There are again issues with typos... still reading through, so I don't know how many.
I love getting to picture Holo's playfulness anew despite the errors of grammar and spelling.

Well, I just finished Volume VII yesterday in English... I think the English translation was pretty well done. I forgot how Wolf and Amber Melancholy was done from Holo's perspective.

♥ Holo!

I kinda liked the dust jacket. It keeps the dust off, and also all the other volumes of mine had them.

While, I got no formal response, I believe it is because (if you look Volume VII and onward) the book codes have been changed to "trade paperback". The service department only told me "trade paperback books do not have dust jackets"... so I did the math and came to the above conclusion.

Oh, yeah. Basically they decided to officially stop making the dusk jackets, right? Pity. What book code did they use before?

One that would classify them as softback novels.

Hello firends, first time here (in this topic)

Sorry for the intromission and for not reading the whole topic.

I want to buy the english version of the novels, but everywhere i go (only amazon and bookdepository), the version of the first volume is the one with the "real life" cover.

i have nothing against it, but i would really prefer the original Horo cover. and not being able to know what version i will get make me a bit reluctant in ordering.

have someone of you bought it at bookdepository and know which version of the book they have ?

Thank you again.

I'm not entirely sure, but last I knew they re-did the first book to make the cosplay cover a dust jacket. Unless someone clarifies for me we can assume it's still the "real" cover.

Edit: How's everyone's book 7?

They did... but I do not know if any further prints will even include the DJ.

As for the book, Holo is as cute as ever... nice to see a story from her perspective... just one or two typos... over all, well done.

I do love Holo's inner thoughts on Yoitsu-style care for the ill. I much prefer it to Lawrence's take on care for the ill.
