Now and then, here and there

Was just so sad to me. A world in which the dictator in charge is more or less out of his friging mind. Can you imagine the stuff that goes down?

You really don't have to imagine. Just read up on Nazi Germany or Stalin's USSR. No, wait. That will not make you sad. I think it'll scare the hell out of you.

Iriya no Sora, was for me. So short yet it is the only anime I can still think of and remember to this day (Atfer a few years) that still has an emotional impact on me. I can watch it over and over knowing whats going to happen, and still feel totally depressed/sad after ;.;.

Also Rahxephon also was pretty sad.

The last line from the novel, before the epilogue, moved me the most.

"Iriya had returned to the skies."

AIR, without a doubt. Also, Azumanga Daioh. The series itself wasn't sad, but I baw'd like crazy at the very last episode. It's unbelievable.

A few years ago I would have said SaiKano, but looking back, I thought that series was trying way too hard to be depressing. Utter hopelessness and end-of-the-world scenarios really don't affect me, whereas bittersweet themes with a glimmer of hope such as those found in AIR do. Oh well.

I think for Saikano, the manga was better at this department than the anime. The manga ending is open for interpretation, so yeah. (Not sure about the anime. But chances are it was straightforward.)

Hmm... H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ was overall pretty depressing. I have mixed feelings about the ending.

Spoiler for H2O:

EDIT: I guess that warrants spoiler tags.

Really? I found Lamune's ending to be rather uplifting. A touch of hope for all of us.

And the depression level of Clannad pales in comparison to other Key adaptations (yes, even the movie), let alone a lot of the other stuff in this thread.

im basing lamune off ep 10-11 that made it sad. it did show a ray of hope in ep12 but that only came in the last 7 minutes in the ep.

Spoiler for Air TV:

Air was sad not just because of what happened, but the whole setup for that last sequence made it pretty powerful. All the mom/daughter development in the last few episodes, the heart-wrenchingly sweet way in which Mizuzu approached everything, the powerful flashbacks, and of course the haunting Aozora song. Just thinking about it gets me choked up.

Spoiler for *sniff*:
