Yuu gets new Personas from the social link that he develops with a certain character. The problem is that it's explained on a whim and usually during the battle so it might give an image that he unleashes it out of thin air aka ''usual shonen main hero power-up''. In the game he also gets the persona cards from the Shadows he defeats in dungeons... but it isn't the case here it seems.

I'm pretty sure it's obvious by now that Arcana Card = More Persona.
So rather than a power-up, it's more like they're revealing more of what his power can naturally do. In this case, it's the Fusion of two Persona(s) into a stronger one.

pay attention to the beginning of the eps before the OP, where the lady is telling Yuu how he now also gains the power of " " which he can use to help him during the battles.
The cards are all there, he just need to use them. well, to the viewers it's like "omg he summoned Izanagi!" "omg he changed persona when Izanagi's useless!" "omg crit!!" "omg he fused two to a stronger persona when the ones he has is useless!". If you put it that way it does seem like lazy, though that's pretty much the end of the "upgrades" of mechanics. It will probably make more sense if he does the fusion elsewhere instead of mid battle, but it just wouldn't be as dramatic.

this episode really funny, but it doesn't mean that it a positive thing to the series. in fact,i think being too funny like this is a negative thing. it doesn't hurt to have some joke, but have too much joke come out of nowhere like this seriously ruining the meaning of shadow fight. they should have made shadow kanji more serious, his backstory and resolution scence just too short for people who never played the game to understand him properly, he in fact not gay, he just have some sexuality confusion which is pretty common for teenager but the anime make him look outright gay and this episode could be very offensive to gay people. The manga’s take on this part was much more serious. There were almost no gay jokes, except what was already in the game. The manga version did not have the boys whine about going home, they just kept on going without complaining, the manga version captured the original game’s seriousness by showing a young dark-haired Kanji being bullied for sewing/girl he liked cried/the other girls called him sissy in elementary school/he beat up another boy with a bloodstained chair in middle school and then became a delinquent with bleached hair. The shadow in the manga/game was also very angry and serious at the end, while the anime one is stupidly happy the entire time. Kanji’s shadow’s cry for acceptance came off across as serious as in the original game/while the anime version had him running in a way that would be a homophobe’s nightmare (happily looking as if he wanted to kiss someone).

While I did laugh a lot with this episode, I agree with Xenio. P4 may not be the most serious story in the world, but it's not like this either. They are betting on the funny passages of the game and are making the whole thing like this. And next episode will most probably have the same formula.

^And since when did I say that it is not funny? I said I laughed a lot with the episode (in fact, it's the very beginning of my post). What I don't like is that they're betting the WHOLE thing on this, rather than trying to keep things balanced.

I'd rather have an anime that knows when not to take itself too seriously rather than turn into a trainwreck like Trinity Soul and what appears to be Phi Brain at the moment.
We got two cours man it may get more serious later on.

^Of course it will, the second part of the game is more serious, so the tv series will most likely follow the same pattern.
That still doesn't make me feel any better about the present, though. Not to mention that I'm not liking Yosuke at all in this, but this comes from a fan so I'm completely biased |

one more thing that mid-battle psychological attack have decreased, in ep 2 and ep 3, shadow yosuke and shadow chie continuously mock yosuke/chie during the battle, in ep 4, shadow yukiko do psychological attack yukiko during the battle but not much. but in ep 7, shadow kanji just make gay joke and let nice guy and tough guy deal with the party then do a finishing attack
Spoiler for some next ep:
at least his shadow in the game is not as gay as in the anime Quote:
this should be how people understand kanji after play the game: someone who try to be accepted as a man even when he do some girl thing like sewing watch the anime: some gay guy who try to be manly and not accept his gay side Last edited by Xenio; 2011-11-22 at 23:32. |

What I DO feel is unnecessary is them apparently throwing 2 funny episodes back to back, based on the preview. They need to space this stuff out!

slowpoke here, I've only just finished episode 7 on the eve of the next episode. (Skyrim, why you no let me stop playing!)
I guess most of the people who went through the game are feeling the same about how they dumbed down kanji's complex. It certainly was a lot more provocative and interesting in the game. But screw that all, this episode was a friggin' blast, it's been awhile since I laughed that hard. The timing of the jokes were awesome (Dat instant persona summoning scene) I do wonder if they plan on revisiting they main cast with their own social link episodes since there is still much to be explored on their various complexes. Spoiler for Not forgetting....:
