Re:Zero - Character Discussion - Subaru

The purpose of this thread is to provide a place to discuss all things Subaru related.
To keep the discussion enjoyable for all Re:Zero fans, please follow the guidelines below and stay on-topic!
Note: Please don't use this for the specifics (i.e. episode, chapter, game, etc. discussion) there are other threads for that stuff.
Thread Guidelines
  • No campaigning!
No "hate" or "xyz must die" posts. Discuss why you do or don't like characters without whinging and whining or blatantly campaigning for your favourite.

  • Be polite to your fellow forum members.
Do not insult or harass other members for their likes and dislikes. Do not take it so seriously that you end up in an argument with another forum member because they express a fondness for a character you loathe. Discussion and good spirited banter are always welcome, but harassing people will not be tolerated.

  • Discuss, don't chat.
Please remember that AnimeSuki is a discussion forum, not a chat room, there is a difference. If you wish to chat, then please make use of our IRC channel.

  • Have fun, but post intelligently.
It's great to have fun, but please try your best to add substance to what you post and make your thoughts interesting for the generation of fans that will follow after you’re long gone and on to watching some other series.

  • Use Spoiler tags!
Spoilers are allowed, but they must be enclosed in spoiler tags clearly marked with a proper title. Failure to do this can result in a BAN.

    • Adding a Spoiler tag:
Just highlight your spoiler and click the button found on the "Quick Reply" and "Reply to Thread" forms. Make sure that you include a title for the spoiler!

    • Please use the Report button if you see any spoilers:
Click the button found to the left of the post, just under the poster's avatar. Using the Report button is anonymous and helps the Moderators to locate and deal with problems quickly.

    • Posting prohibited spoilers may result in a ban.
Note: Reporting a post does not mean the poster will be banned instantly. The Moderators will use bans if warnings are repeatedly ignored.

Forgive me for saying this , is he one of the most unlikable main character for western audience ?
Not even a single post for this thread . Yes , he is annoying but compared to other anime typical shounen generic MC's like Naruto/Luffy/Ichigo or stoic Heero/ Inaho/Setsuna . I still find him interesting in terms of character growth and more human like behavior

I'm not campaigning about him though but I think the author have some sort of vendetta against his own main character . Just like to hear other forumers thoughts about him.

I actually think he's a good main character. He acts like a little shit so often but he's still better than so many others especially since he originates from a WN/LN.

His development is leaps and bounds ahead of many others and a MC that isn't OP is refreshing at times. Furthermore, he really is a pretty normal person. His rant in episode 18 showed that.

I actually quite like him. I just like Rem a LOT more, and maybe that's one of the reasons people don't often discuss male MCs around here? They prefer to focus on the heroines?

Well rather than not being discussed, i think it is because we already know so much about our MC that there isn't any need to discuss much, plus a lot of the discussion has happened both in the weekly episode discussion thread and the lightnovel/mang thread which is why Subaru isn't much of a topic for anyone to discuss on a seperate thread.

You're right, there's that, too. Good point. People sure have gone to town on him, right?
They still do, come to think of it.

I don't think they will ever stop, honestly, there hasn't been a show where we could so clearly see what our MC's fault is and how he move past that point to become a better Main than this show, or at least from what i have seen.

I, for one, love that little point. Some people seem to hate it, tho.

He is a flawed guy that matures at slow pace unlike most characters that come to a catharsis and become super awesome, earning everyone's admiration and a new found power.

Subaru only got Rem and a few friends.

I find laughable people saying he deserves all that suffering, to me it's disproportionate retribution.

i actually quite fond of subaru, rarely you see this kind of MC (beside shinji i guess?)

he is the epitome of "If there is no struggle, there is no progress"

you can argue that his reaction is not realistic (human enough in my opinion though), but all of the things happen to him will happen to a normal person that got transported to Re zero world pretty much. I still cant get around with people comment "just kill yourself subaru" like it is really easy to kill yourself, not to mention you dont even know exactly how your "respawn" will work, or how many continues you actually have, this is not a cliche show where your ability was shown and explained properly (hint hint, all of those transported to MMORPG world,, blech, sorry for that i just have a really biased negative view on those series)

You're totally right here. Killing yourself is certainly not easy and he said in the past he doesn't want to die and judging by his reactions it hurts a lot to die in this way, just like it usually would.
At some point he might become numb to it but that would take some time.

Spoiler for episode 7:

Spoiler for episode 7:
yeah episode 7 is where he suicide because that timeline is a dead end and he is determined to save Rem and fix the whole issues of misunderstanding.

I understand where people coming from with "kill yourself subaru" after that episode (hey the guy kill himself once, why not twice eh?) honestly if i was asked about this, i cant really give a correct answer, or something that i myself will believe what Subaru is actually thinking, other than he might not actually be sure about his return by death checkpoints, total number of continues and well dying hurts a lot.

Did nagatsuki tappei ever brush this issue in one of his Q n A ?

It could be because he remember that fall, that moment of anguish till the blunt impact that crushed his bones and stuff, splatter his skull and brain matter, or just snap his neck (French have tested the reactions of guillotine victims, and yes they do have reactions before the brain shut off for good. The experience must have been horrific).

At least, those without his ability wont have to deal with it again. Whereas, for him, it's something he'd rather NOT DO AGAIN.

Since the ability is not realistic to begin with no one can really say they would have the courage to abuse it. (especially with the feature of it still hurting a lot) Thus far he tried to use every failed tale to its fullest(except for episode 7), even when it looked pretty bad.

You could argue in those scenes where it was really hopeless he just didn't really have the strength to kill himself anymore. Like he pretty much didn't even think about it anymore. Only in some scene he actually asked Beako to kill him.

Episode 7 was one of the episodes where he still managed to think it out since he didn't go batshit insane from his surroundings.

All in all, maybe the author just didn't feel like it would be that interesting for him to abuse his ability. It would have been a very boring plot then I guess.

Btw: The only thing that I found a bit weird was how he didn't really mind being in another world all of the sudden. Like he was shocked for a second there but other than that he took it pretty chill.
Well maybe it gets explained in the novel or I'm just missing something about him, I was just a bit surprised that is all.

Ep18 gave you a clear look. He was elated at the prospect of being able to start anew. He thought it's the second chance that god has given to him.

Subaru is the biggest damn idiot in any anime shows I ever watched, and I watched quite few of them.

Now I can understand going insane and his surroundings and politics and everything... But you thought that after dying 20+ times and countless continuing to insult everyone he should not would at least give him some hint about what to do to decrease his suffering?

And don't let me start about his inability to read situations and act rationally rather than entering like a yahoo cowboy an demanding stuff. He needed 18 episodes and several characters explaining the same damn thing to him every time he falls into depression to figure it out that this is not a game anymore and he must start to think rationally for a change.

But for now I will look forward at how he will develop from here. Until now his actions only made me rage because of sheer stupidity of his actions.

I have no idea what any of this supposed to mean, but I'm pretty sure it has little to do with what show is talking about. Nobody has been explaining the same thing to him for 18 episodes because he hasn't gone through samething for that long. Every Arc put him in a different situation that required it's own method to solve. His interactions and relationships were also different as each arc bulit upin the results that came afterwards. It's been dynamic exprience that challenged his differnet instead making some emotionless "know it all perfect robot" who never makes mistakes and can use his power to solve any issue without any limitations, uncertainties or drawbacks. That not how life works. EP 18 didn't mark the end of him no longer having any conflict beyond who he is fighting.

When has Subaru ever treated this like it was a game? He has been serious in just about every loop and knows that this is all very real.
