Ishihara in the US: “I’m Buying the Senkaku Islands!”

"Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara has announced on a visit to the USA that he is
negotiating for Tokyo to buy the Senkaku Islands, currently the subject of Chinese
claims.

In a recent press conference given in Washington, he announced that he is
negotiating with the private owner of the islands with a view to acquiring the isles
for Tokyo."

There is no correlation between IQ and common sense

Actually, there is no such thing as common sense. As GrimaH from HWZ-SG aptly put it :

Quote:
Unfortunately, there simply isn't a common-sense answer for many questions. In politics, for example, there are a lot of issues where people disagree. Each side thinks that their answer is common sense. Clearly, some of these people are wrong.

The reason they are wrong is because common sense depends on the context, knowledge and experience of the observer. That is why instruction manuals will often have paragraphs like these:

When boating, use common sense. Have one life preserver for each person in the boat.

When towing a water skier, use common sense. Have one person watching the skier at all times.

If the ideas are so obvious, then why the second sentence? Why do they have to spell it out? The answer is that "use common sense" actually meant "pay attention, I am about to tell you something that inexperienced people often get wrong."

Science has discovered a lot of situations which are far more unfamiliar than water skiing. Not surprisingly, beginners find that much of it violates their common sense. For example, many people can't imagine how a mountain range would form. But in fact anyone can take good GPS equipment to the Himalayas, and measure for themselves that those mountains are rising today.

Most of all, you have to be disciplined and you have to save, even if you hate our current financial system. Because if you don't save, then you're guaranteed to end up with nothing.

No, there is common sense. Just because it doesn't apply to politics doesn't mean it doesn't exist. For example, should you run across the street in the middle of traffic? No, that's common sense. Should you change lanes in traffic without making sure there's not a car directly next to you? No, common sense says you'll cause an accident. Yet these sorts of stupid behavior continue to persist, because people don't have common sense. Just because it's becoming more uncommon doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

No, someone taught you that - even if only by example. You don't *know* fire burns til it happens or you see it happen. Humans do come with an empathy clue (the ability to project oneself into another's shoes) though it gets squashed during development in some cases. "Common sense" really equals "innate wiring" and humans come in remarkably low on that measurement in comparison with most other species.

I will believe common sense is "common" the day I see people stop standing in fires during MMORPG raids.

Natch.

Are the subway conductors ever even exposed during service? O_o... I don't recall ever seeing who the conductors are... There's like a locked titanium cockpit at the front.

Sounds like you're talking more about instincts than common sense.

Quote:
Common sense is defined by Merriam-Webster as, "sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts."
The key words are judgment and simple perception. Many lack those, but it doesn't mean common sense is non-existent.

As long as you remember that "common sense" used to be "well, the crops failed because she's a witch!! Burn her!!" or "Well, of course the Earth is flat - can't you see?"

That "simple perception" often precludes the "sound and prudent".

It actually sounds better if the "common sense" wise old people use in their sentences is replaced with "logically speaking" - doing so would make me not want to support the "Gas Geriatrics Group". "Common sense" has become a rhetoric that we don't use its underlying concepts of "logic" and "discovery of detail" anymore.

The term has become a cliche like "reality" that "nonsense" has become synonymous with them. How is it "common sense" to spend all your savings on investments so you can have a chance to beat inflation in the future?

Jounalism fail at its best :

Jaw-dropping video: iPad survives fall from outer space

Quote:
The high-definition video shows the iPad falling from a height of 100,000 feet (30,480 meters), with the blackness of space and the bright curve of Earth providing a stunning backdrop. The device free-falls all the way back to Earth to make a crash landing on a rocky Nevada hillside.
Outer space begins at the Karman line, which iS 100 KILOMETRES (100,000 METRES) from the surface, not 100,000 FEET. Secondly, at outer space, the density of particles is so low that it is almost impossible to float the balloon there - fluid mechanics is almost inapplicable.
