Update! Whenever I read a Kamachi story I always end up underestimating it. Knowing Kamachi I should have expected Catherine's backstory to really hit me in the feels yet I had dismissed it in the back of my mind.

Well that explains why Oh Ho Ho was doing that kind of stuff. And all four factions are in this mess now. Faith Organization, or at least that crazy Kerukeion Greek sect, are the ones responsible for this. Now I wonder if the Old Fashion was actually sent to stop Oh Ho Ho and make things worse for everyone else. But what do they win by releasing Pathogen X?

More 37th's casualties, and Catherine's infected because she tried to save Quenser isntead. To make matter worse, someone somehow put an Object in the asteroid. Orbital Object drop happened and we didn't even know it until now...

Spoiler for Day 4 & Day 5 P1-3:

The Lizard Tail was a weird Object, intentionally taking damage to get close enough for his hacking trick to work, but I can't deny it was effective. Old Fashion seems to be a nice guy.

Turns out the pathogen is a really deadly FO military chemical. Quenser, Heivia, Myonri and Evans (I'm surprised he's still alive) leave the city in a submarine tank and are sent to try and get info on the infection from a VIP who survived, likely because she paid the company that made the weapon for the antidote. Unfortunately, Oh Ho Ho notices them trying to sneak out and uses some anti-sub countermeasures. Makes sense that an amhibious Object (even if she tilts towards land combat) would have a weapon like that.

Quenser and the others are pretty pissed, so the mission to get the cure goes quicky (though it helps that the mercenary bodyguards in the Olive Garden are pragmatic enough to be convinced not to fight an enemy that's not after their own clients). However, the Zombie Object is not done, as it literally rises from its watery grave to attack them just as they were being questioned by Oh Ho Ho in the Rush.

Anyway, can we declare now that Quenser is the ultimate terrorist? He makes everything he gets his hands on explode... EVERYTHING. Put this guy in a 7-Eleven, and watch him kill an entire Brigade. In a shopping mall, give him enough time to travel all over it and watch him level a Superweapon.

And people will dread the day he gets a mission where he messes up an Object Hangar, he will make a "Break Carrier 2.0" with the scraps....

He also improvised a ultrasonic weapon earlier this volume. In canon, anyone who's smart enough is wary of Quenser getting anywhere near anything that can be used to make explosives, as seen in vol 6.

Even a child who kept up to date with the news sites that had replaced newspapers would know Quenser Barbotage was proficient with explosives. After all, he had been awarded for blowing up Objects with them. It was perfect for a quick topic to discuss at mealtime.

And that was why the masked men from the Night Edge Platoon grimaced slightly when they realized Quenser had kicked open the door to the workshop and holed himself up inside. They knew about the gunpowder used for metalworking. And Quenser Barbotage was known for doing his own thing no matter what he was told.

I don't really get why quarantining the Second Venice was necessary. If the mold was just a delivery vehicle for the poison, then shouldn't anyone who came into contact with a poisoned spore be... dead... and the rest of the spores be completely harmless?

And why was the Exact Javelin pilot being returned to civilian life while she was still useful? Wouldn't that be literally throwing away a multimillionaire dollar asset?

And Kamachi I fucking love your writing style here, it's full of innuedos, especially the Staivia arc:

“Dimiksy cannot fire containers repeatedly like a machinegun, can he?” asked Mikfa.

It's just Kamachi being sly. It is his own country. If he blatantly said it was Japan then it would have broken the immersion.

Spoiler for End of Vol 12:

So the Faith Organization group had a really twisted plan, in the end being more like a crazy cult looking for their chosen one as pointed out by the story. The Lizard Tail's Elite's backstory is pretty sad, there was really nothing else to be done about them. Quenser, Froleytia and Milinda enjoy themselves making fun of Oh Ho Ho and Lendy as they prepare for the final fight with the Old Fashion, who was part of FO plan but was really aiming for an exciting fight in which his enemy finally surpasses him. He holds up pretty well despite fighting two Objects and the traps laid by the two battalions, but he's ultimately defeated.

Of course, to remind us that HO is still a shitty world, it's revealed that the agency that examines Elites that are trying to go back to civilian life is controlled by the army, and they were never planning on letting Catherine simply be free. But their excuse for doing so seems to blow up on their faces, as Quenser takes his self-appointed role of big brother really seriously and contacts his father. Some interesting stuff in the afterword, such as the Lizard Tail originally using metal-eating bacteria as a weapon and that Kamachi finished writing the novel as the 10th volume was being released (so he's keeping up the "2 volumes ahead" even as he releases one volume per month. Really, get some rest before you get sick Kamachi).

I really enjoyed this volume and all the callbacks and cameos of previous characters. And I agree that Kamachi tends to make cool parents and older people in his stories.

Wow. This is just... um... yeah. Only off by about half the electromagnetic spectrum.

I do wonder why they never would have mentioned the massive cancer hazard from being in the vicinity of an object, though.

They did say this x-ray radar is only useful when combined with a special chaff, it's rarely used so it doesn't blast x-rays out all the time.

The part reporting Catherine failed had me cursing so hard inside, can't say I didn't see it coming, but it was still disgusting as hell. the old lady watching over her and Froleytia's comment didn't help either. I was hoping Catherine can at least stay in the 37th even if she can't live as a civilian (unreasonable both in and out-universe I know). Then Quenser's dad makes official appearance and saves the day, absolute boss.

The cool dad thing made me laugh while died a little inside when you think about Kyousuke. He's all on his own with not even a father figure, the closest he had to a mother figure (the professor who Mika reminds him of) is no longer with him.
