Part of this may be due to the unexpected situation with the illustrator, who seems to be quite unwell at the moment. If the choice came down to switching illustrators or ending the story (or at least the current 'arc' of the story) rather quickly, they may have weighed the risks and chosen the latter. This story was certainly raised to prominence in a significant way thanks to the illustrator, and changing it may not feel appropriate (and/or there may be contractual implications).

Anyway, for now we can only wait to see what truly happens in the next volume. There may still be a lot of misdirection at play.

That's completely untrue. I won't say there wasn't some element of competition to it, but Sena didn't start paying attention to him because of Yozora, nor is that why she liked him.

She liked him because he was the only person to treat her like an ordinary person instead of some perfect princess, back when he scolded her for getting high and mighty with those guys hitting on her at the pool.

It's what happened. His brain wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders at the time. Find the post with the exact translation for that part you'll see what I mean.

It's too late to wake up. He said it himself the series is over. Next volume will be an epilogue.

Nah the illustrator is sick, the author has been quoted saying he's constantly bumping heads with his editor and he's basically just rushing to the finish. Why would an arc need an epilogue? If you've read the book you'd know the story is ended. Lame ending and all.

Second season didn't sell well there isn't enough material to warrant a 3rd too. Anime's are released mostly to promote the source material like manga, light novels and even games so from a business stand point there is no reason for a third. Most we'll get is an OVA or 2 but even then why would you want to watch this train wreck of an ending?
