There is eventually a turning point in the manga where the reader is expected the have read Negima and be familiar with the events. However, it is quite far into the manga. Before that, any elements that were brought over from Negima were accompanied with an explanation so new readers wouldn't be lost.

Yeah, they nailed the first ep. The op and ed animation were sort of meh, but the nostalgia of the first OP song was very real. Even though the start is sort of lackluster, they're adapting it faithfully. I can't wait until we get into the story. As a fan of the first series and as a long-time fan of Ken Akamatsu in general, I'm hopeful that he'll finally obtain ONE good anime adaptation of one of his works.

The nostalgia card's being played pretty strongly in the OP. |

Think they're just hoping to sell more CDs with Happy Material sung by different combinations of the cast ^^;
Anyway, I liked the start. Hope they explain why Tota has Konoka's family name and why there is a Negi tombstone near his parents... He's Negi and Konoka's grandson??? No need for the manga readers to answer the speculation |

When the first few seconds aired, I was expecting to hear Nonaka Ai alongside Kanda Akemi in anime again (aside from Apocrypha, GBF and other minors), but no, there was no Konoka. Konoka was definitely the first role by which I know about Aippon. And an aged OP recycling sang by different cast seriously? I might remember wrongly, but I think it was used for the boxed OVAs that came with the manga volumes 20++ too

Why was Asuna the only one to keep her panties and bra while the rest of them got the ermine censors. It looks so akward. Not to menton the scene of Eva nearly flashing the camera while in her loli form and the jiggle with the T & A in the intro. I actually came for the plot, not the fanservice.
Touta's voice sounds so wrong its jarring. I was expecting something... I don't know. A little different. That being said, nice to see they went in with the violence and blood. You can't skimp on that in this series. Though, I found it odd that none of them asked why he was covered in blood.

was pretty impressed with the camera and art quality.
the emotions in the beginning in how it protrayed the sadness of immortality where she's waving goodbye to the class, and even the little munchkin thing breaks down and she walks ahead

Didn't really like the character design/art. Considering I've read Negima almost two dozen times by now the Negima characters looked particularly off.
And they got Asuna's underwear color completely wrong! And her VA has certainly gotten older. And while I like Happy Material, I still believe it was a terrible choice and has no business here, and if you have to go for the obvious nostalgia value from the get-go there's probably a problem. Also what's up with Ghost Negi, lol. |
