New Fansub Group : Dodgy_subs

Hello everyone,

My friend and I started our own Fansub Group.
We call ourselves Dodgy_subs and we are busy translating and subtitling Takarajima.
I think I can safely say that we are one of the first Fansub groups from South Africa.

I don't know if any of you know Takarajima.
It's a 1979 anime show and it translates to "Treasure Island". It's a 26 episode TV series.
It's directed by Osamu Dezaki and it is largely unknown in the US.
The DVDs has been released last year in Japan. So far there is no word on it being licensed in America.

The reason we've decided to fansub this specific title, is because it actually aired in South Africa in the early 90's. We've got many fond memories of this show, so we decided to track it down after all these years.
Seeing as how it is only available in Japan, we decided to buy the DVDs and subtitle the show.

So far we've translated and subbed the first 2 episodes. We plan to start working on the 3rd episode in the near future.

We do, in fact, need some help:

Can anyone tell me by what means we can distribute this fansub?
Since we are from South Africa, so we don't have access to fast internet connections.

Will any of you be willing to distribute it for me in America if I send you the CD with the episodes?

Where can I go to register Dodgy_subs as a valid anime fansub group and make people aware of our project?

I hope you'll be able to help me out with this.

I can help distribute it on BT via my server, as well as provide hosting for a tracker.

You can either spend a while uploading it via FTP or send it to me via CD, I live in the UK.

Reply if you're interested.

Wow, a new fansub group that
A.) Comes with a translator
B.) Isn't going to try and sub Chrno Crusade.

Perhaps the fansub world isn't doomed after all!

I wish you best of your luck in your endevours... I know NOTHING about distroing, but if I see this thing go some time without a response from somebody knowledgable, I'll have one of the distro captains I know give you some pointers.

What Captain could also try to do is find an internet cafe with really high speed(relatively) and then take his CD there and upload the eps to Ketsu-kun's ftp. Gambare, Hamsack!

My experience with this is that a group always needs fservs/bots in its channel for all those pesky users who come in and demand a dcc transfer because they can't use bt for som reason. Most of them are behind college firewalls or something.

Ketsu_Kun, you offer really sounds nice to me.
I will try to find someone here with a fast internet connection during the course of the day for uploading purposes.
If my attempt is in vain, I will PM you tonight and organize to send the CD to you.
Thank you very much for helping me out. I really appreciate it.

I will also post some URLs tonight with some pictures and info of Takarajima

Er....it's fairly funny, but do you really want to be called "Dodgy Subs"? I mean "We Suck" is pretty funny, but it take further...

First you should start an IRC channel, and probably a bittorrent tracker. IRC channels are pretty easy to register (on mircx at least). Just go /msg chanserv register #channelname password. For a bittorrent tracker, I'd contact either the scarywater or base0.net BT hosts. I think they can be found at #animesuki @ mircx. Or you can make one of your own... just look up how it's done on the bittorrent site.

You'd probably need the IRC channel to recruit bittorrent seeders or file servers. So put up a request ad or put on your channel topic that you are looking for these types of people, and who they should contact about it (your distro head or whatever).

Or, you can just go BT only and have your encoder seed the file and just let everyone download from him. It'd be slower... especially with slower internet connections, but it still works since it's BT. You can even distribute the torrent to only fast people, and then release it to the public when the fast people have the file.

Thanks for the tips Kasshin.
I'll be sure to look into it, but for the time being, I'm gonna take Ketsu_Kun up on his offer.
Another means of distribution we've tried is Streamload, but we've had no luck there so far because of our poor internet connections (upload speed of 2.6KB/sec)

As promised, here's some links with pictures and info on Takarajima.

Sorry for the long absence.

At the moment we're done with Episodes 1 - 4 of this series. It really is a gem.
I've just received the second Japanese DVD of Takarajima and plan to continue subbing the next 4 episodes as soon as possible.

Sorry for taking so long to release all the episodes.
At the moment I'm in need of more translators and distributors in America and England.
If anyone is interested in helping out with translating, let me know. I'd really like to see this show released on fansub.

DiGi Charat Summer Special 2000

No. We basically started Dodgy_subs for Takarajima and I plan to see this project through.

If I can somehow manage to recruit more translators, we will think about subbing a second show.
But then it will most likely be an older show as well.

One of A-K's former translators was from South Africa.

Most fansub groups aren't from anywhere... A-K currently has members in France, the Netherlands, Canadia, Singapore, various places in the US, and a couple moving to Japan in a few months... and we're a pretty small group.

I was under the impression you're going to release them as soon as you receive it. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
You can release them now.

I will send you episodes 3 and 4 sometime.
Just need to sort out a few issues with ep 4.
Also, you may release future episodes as soon as you receive them
Thanks Ketsu-Kun.
