And most popular anime are meant for twelve-year olds: Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, etc.
Because they're meant for twelve-year olds, they're more enjoyable, since they're simply more fun.

The diffrence between the series and what they are trying to achieve is so huge I'm not even gonna go there. Besides it's not among my top picks ^^

1. Yu Yu Hakusho - This is the one that got me watching more anime, I will always love it <3 (I remember waiting for it to come on every day during Toonami XD)

Originally, upon viewing Haibane Renmei, I was somewhat skeptical. Blurry animation? No fighting? No romance? Simple character designs? As I watched it, though I was drawn into a world rife with symbolism and meaning. It’s heart warming without being overly saccharine. And most of all it, it deals with difficult issue loss, sin, redemption, the very meaning of life and death itself. I often find myself saying, it’s the one anime I’ve seen that's quality stands independently of the fact it is anime.

Spoiler for Utawarerumono:

Utawarerumono is the finest fantasy adventure show I've seen--and I‘ve seen quite a few. The main characters actually grow realistically, an adult lead helps immensely, and are decidedly changed by their journey through life. The characters might seem as stereotypes but they really transcend these and become well rounded characters, at least as much as could be expected with so many characters and so little time (though apparently there‘s 3 ovas in the works). These characters are likeable and with surprising ease, the viewer becomes emotionally attached and cares about their fate. Be warned, Utawarerumono pulls no punches, and if makes are made, characters can pay dearly for them. Difficult issues about freewill versus fate, loss, sacrifice, regret, defining oneself, honor, revenge are all tackled and it balances a worthwhile story with entertainment, something rarely achieved. Utawarerumono is the best of the best in the fantasy genre.

Spoiler for XXXholic:

XXXholic is an hybrid of cliché anime plots and characters, rich Japanese folklore, and the darker part of the human psyche. The characters while stereotypes in some ways, transcend being limited merely by being stereotypes. The complex and interesting Japanese myths are interwoven into the plot seamlessly and the mythology behind them is both entertaining and educating. Finally, the story deals with human motivations, both noble and foul, both healthily and obsessive. The price of your time, will doubtless yield all you could wish for from an anim

Spoiler for Voices of a Distant Star:

Voices of a Distant Star, had quite a bit going against it when I first heard of it. First, it’s only one OVA. How could a story being compelling or character’s be developed in such a short time? How could one get drawn in and care? And a mecha anime? That valuable little screen time would probably be wasted on fight scenes full of stills or worse. How utterly boring I thought. But on the insistence of others, I decided at least it wouldn’t be that big of a time sink. And I was simply astounded. I actually felt my heart string’s being plucked. The story invokes emotion and pulls the strings expertly manipulating the reader like a marionette. It is perhaps one of the best and most bittersweet anime, I have experienced…yes experienced, not watched.

Spoiler for Cardcaptor Sakura:

Like most of the animes, that I've come to thoroughly enjoy, I was initially skeptical of Card Captor Sakura. One of my first experiences with anime was catching an episode of the dub on television and while I was impressed with the animation, the insipid drivel that the characters spouted was enough for me to avoid watching more. At the urging of a friend, I decided to give it another chance and the difference between sub and dub, was large as the difference between night and day. What sets this series apart from so many others, is the fact the characters actually develop--they change and grow. Rivals become allies of circumstance, and eventually truly friends, and finally, well, you'll have to find out for yourself .It is sweet and optimistic, without seeming too naïve, there's loss without bitterness, and the story leaves one feeling hopefully, and there's little more of a measure of an anime than that--can it touch your heart and Card Captor Sakura does that flawlessly.
