Except I'm not sure how that was *sad* (see OP title) ... he seems to have "deserved" every blow. Cruel justice for all the injustice he committed (and an interesting morality play on some types of visual novels).

For myself, AIR (tv, several instances) and "Grave of the Fireflies".

There was a recent death in Kurozuka that caught me off guard... but that was more shock than grief.

With Tomoe's death in Kenshin's arm. That was intense, very tragic. Something like that must have been a far deeper scar than the X on his face...or perhaps not, since half of that X was carved in this very event.

It's parodied and referenced so much in Japanese anime that I think I'll laugh my head off rather than cry if I ever encounter the story in whatever media.

Grave of the Fireflies was probably the saddest of the bunch, if only for its cold-blodded realism. The whole story was delivered so coldly and without any sort of sweetening to it that it makes it very shocking--even if you knew exactly what was going to happen since minute one.

Now Sekai on the other hand, I felt really sad for.

Yes. Only the ignorant who has not seen this movie would name any other title and character as "the saddest death in an anime". This is the saddest of them all that no one who's on Prozac or has suicidal tendencies should be watching.

For me...it would be:
Nuriko's death in Fushigi yuugi (My first time crying for an anime character)
Ai Enma's death in Jigoku Shoujo. Is her's considered dying? or just passing on...? Well it was sad for me.
