Well... Strike Witches has quite a fanbase. There are the WWII aircraft enthusiast + Pantsu fan + loli fan + Guns fan, a fan with those 4 qualities is quite hard to beat, whereas Vivid Red Butt has.... well, at the moment I can only say loli + butts fan, but I'm only referring to those hardcore fans, I'm not saying everyone who watches these shows are the above, but yeah, for example, Girls Und Panzer has tanks fans.

But then I haven't been to 2ch in years (decades?), so I'm just musing

Some stills for episode 3 from Dengeki.
http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/585/585163/

Nothing too special. Akane is wearing a visor for some reason though!

Edit: Oh wait, it also mentions that the website has the episode 3 preview up.

I would guess that Vivid Red may also have mecha fans (well, the magical girl type of mecha, anyway :P. Nanoha or similar type series fans, etc.), but in general I agree that Strike Witches scope and setting allows for a much wider/richer world of material. The Strike Witches universe is wide enough to sustain multiple manga, LN, and other series on top of a movie + two or more seasons of anime. Vivid Red's original universe, meanwhile, doesn't seem like it will be super deep which would mean that its story will just depend on its ~5-6 main characters.

At this stage I will be pretty surprised if Vivid Red becomes a bigger or longer-lasting franchise than Strike Witches. On the other hand I do think it might be plausible if Vivid Red sells more BD disks; overall, I kind of like Vividred's atmosphere better and the art/presentation is much more impressive/polished. Basically, I do feel that in a lot of ways Vivid Red is a very much new and improved Strike Witches, but in the end the world and history of Strike Witches still makes the original a deeper and longer-lasting product.

Military otaku and I will always have some disagreements, so the more superheroic aspects of this series are what's currently giving it an edge over Strike Witches for me. I like my technology like I like my anime girls - fictional and quirky.

My friends and I are watching it as magical girl fans. Though on of them loves it also for the magical girl + military team up.

Very true. I believe the Strike Witches series also has a side story about the Ground Witches, I've not looked into it but it's fascinating.

And while Strike Witches fight to eradicate invaders, at the moment Vivid Red Butt seems like the Alone just want to eat the Engine. Surely, that can't be the only reason, and I sure am interested in what the creator has in store for any deeper story, but yeah it does not seem too deep (ATM)

Aha! I knew I forgot to categorize it: you're right, this series does have that superheroic aspect to it, while Strike Witches are soldiers representing their respective countries, Vivid Red Butt features an old man granting his grand daughter powers to save the day

I'll throw in the dissenting opinion and say that i'm quite charmed by the story, I like my Magical Girls techo based, and I like the random mecha... but oh the fanservice!

Does it need to be so blatant? Another potentially charming show that I can't let anybody see me watching because any reasonable person will assume you're a pervert! Girls und Panzer and Nanoha win on these counts for me.

Vivid Red's fascination with the butt shot still pales in comparison to things we saw during the action-sequence introduction in the first five minutes of Strike Witches.

On the other hand, VR will apparently have a lot more docking.

That said, it's still too early for me to make any particularly deep comparison between the series; SW was a lot more episodic, VR looks like more of a serial (so far, with only two episodes to go on). Tied into that, SW had more characters, though not a huge amount of development beyond the mains. VR should have deeper character arcs with its so-far smaller cast.

So the second Alone will show up in episode 3 after all, that's nice. And the last bit of the preview suggests we may see Wakaba's transformation as well.

I didn't even expect her to wear stuff taken from other animes and that was hilarious. Other than that, looks like a new danger is awaiting for our determined and courageous Akane !

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it's Princess Tutu a duck. It doesn't matter that their abilities come from technology. Tokyo Mew Mew, Mai Otome, Symphogear and Cutie Honey also have their powers from technology. Besides, it is nice to switch it up with some semi-scifi based magical girls every once and awhile.

It doesn't have any lolis - as I pointed out above, all the girls have breasts
So that leaves butt fans, military otaku (fighter jets, destroyer ships) and magical girls fans (even though they're rather "scientific" than "magical" girls here )

They're still in middle school. I'm declaring all of them (except the yellow one whose name I haven't bothered to memorize yet) to be lolis. And Momo would still count anyway.

This is tangential evidence at best, but if anybody needed any more evidence that Rei will turn, look at the cover of the OP single.

A thought occurs, if we accept that picture as evidence that Rei will pull a heel face turn, might that picture suggest who could potentially dock with who?

Red: Blue and Black
Blue: Red and Green
Green: Yellow and Blue
Yellow: Green and Black
Black: Yellow and Red

Obviously this is speculation, but it might make more sense for two potential super combos to be on the battlefield at once.
