I think he had his hollow powers ever since he was a kid, maybe he got them when the Grand Fisher killed his mom. The reason I think that is because when he fights Renji for the first time(this is before he trains with Urahara), he enters this kind of battle ecstasy state which reminds me a lot of how Hollow Ichigo acts.
