Ok i finsihed episode 9 and guys i must say i am going to need to see a shrink after i finish this series.

Spoiler for Episode 9 another tear jerker:

Diachi was one character i liked a lot and yes i am using the past tense since he's DEAD now. He unwavering responsability to his siblings far out weighed his own personal gain. Honestly out of all the pilots for Zerath i think Diachi honestly thought about the well beings of others before him self and that includes civilians. When he asked not to be bought back forcefully when his time came so his time with his silbings would not be interuted my heart burst from grief. He even goes as far as to ask dungbeetle to hide his body so as not harm his silblings emotional state even more. This was a big change from watch Chizu's demise as she went for personal gain in the end. For some reason i felt like this episode was rushed a bit i would have liked to have seen it played it for at elast 3 episodes for emotional impact alone. Again each death of this little defenders hurts me so much. They are defending a planet that have not even had a chance to fully appriciate yet.

I can honestly say that if this was real and i could trade places with one of these children to let them live i would. No matter the circumstances a innocent child losing his/her life is always tragic.

Dungbettle was talking to the invisible person again and it seems to think that one of the children have potential. This is raising a whole brand new brain meltdown since its all i can think about. What is really going on?


Last but not least Daichi saying be kind to Kana to her brother was a nice touch for his final words. He charished his silblings and he definetly showed that with his sacrifice and the preperations he made before he went.

Seriously --- what else could they have shown? Maybe more scenes with Daichi with his family, but there would be no point in that at all. You can feel the family bond between them all in that one episode.

Funny story - Daiichi was so nice of a person that his demise almost failed to move me at all. He was kind of bland character, I guess, probably due to having gotten only one episode for his own story, as opposed to Chizu's story which certainly touched me a lot more.

And in other news, so many weeks after I first heard the OP but I still can't get it out of my head, I actually find myself trying to sing the tune in public from time to time.

Daichi's story would have been more effective if it occured immediately after Kodama's, like in the manga, in my opinion. Seeing Chizu's story first dispels the whole thing with Daichi realizing that he's going to die after the battle (something the kids only realized after seeing what happened to Kodama). It was so much more effective in the manga, that again I have to question why Morita changed the pilot order the way he did. Oh well.

Kako didn't care, he didn't want to face the reality of the situation until it was his turn, and that's when he broke down. That's an illustration of his selfish nature. It doesn't really matter what position in the story Kako's turn came, however moving him up affected the impact of Daichi and ------'s stories. Seeing Tanaka and Seki in both character's stories further dilutes their impact (since there was no military intervention in either story in the manga).

I don't really think that is questionable.

I think we should just discuss the anime as it is now instead of constantly comparing it against the manga. The director has been moving things around with his own agenda and he has been given permission to do so by the mangaka himself as long as he does not violate certain rules.

So far, the anime is doing a good job in the eyes of those who are coming to this title via the anime and not via the manga.

We're not comparing anything, we're just mentioning the difference in pilot order --- which brings out a big outcome in both versions of the story.

Watching ep 12 now (thanks Onniguru!).

As expected, it's start of Maki's storyline. So far, the story has been completely rewritten, but the key elements are there. Maki's father is a giant robot maniac. Mother is pregnant. There is an original scene with all of the girls hanging out with Kana and then going over to Ushiro's where Kanji later shows up (poor Kirie being the only kid left out). It was a pretty awesome scene!

Kana's scene from the OP is in here, which means that Kana won't be having her own storyline/episode.

Ushiro is reading a manga called 'Ekki'. Great homage to Ikki (the publication Bokurano runs in).

A good chunk of this episode is wasted on Tanaka arguing with some official. I was tempted to fast forward through it.

Maki hangs out with Komoda in an extended sequence, mirroring the manga. I'm glad they kept that in to illustrate the two's closeness (something not exactly shown in previous episodes). Her mom is there with them as well, and the family ends up in the hospital at the end (to prepare for the birth). Pretty much like the manga, the battle starts before Maki can see the child born..

Maki's battle ground is kept intact, which is a very good thing. It's great how Dungbeetle dodges the question when Maki asks where they are. That will be revealed in the next episode.

Overall a pretty good episode, and one that shows that Morita can actually direct a decent story if it's not dealing with R-rated themes.

Most of the screencaps I simply took as snapshots from the viewer I watched Bokurano in...

But for the Maki --> Ushiro pwnage scene, I went back into vdub and went through frame by frame, trying to get the best shot (still couldnt get it quite where I wanted it). That was a "must have" screencap IMO

As for the Tanaka arguing with an official...five minute sequence (it at least seemed that long), it was especially boring for me, given my limited Japanese language. I understand enough to be able to pick up pieced of the conversations, but long dialogs like that make my eyes glaze over.

machi's parents are legends! now if all wifes are that understanding of their otaku partners then this world would be a better place

not much to say besides this being development for machi as a person and also perhaps her reason for fighting...now i wonder if she will get to see the baby before she dies...miracles do happen ^.^

Daiichi's story was heartwarming but grieving at the same time.

He did have the right to be scared for his death, but not because of dying but due that with him gone then who would take care of his siblings.

Spoiler:

Daiichi has as well his reasons to at least protect his siblings so that they can grow-up in a world that at least know someone would care for them.

I am glad as well that the uncle turned out to be a decent person. I have seen many anime stories with relatives that have been a heck of rotten or scumbags. Good grief, that Daiichi left the world with knowledge that Futaba, Yoshi, and Santa are now taken care of by good hands.

In fact, it became now Futaba's turn to take care of her little family realizing that Daiichi entrusted them to her as the next big sibling.

Something that was not right was Koemushii's conversation.

It definitely was talking to someone, and there was a mention that Ushiro had to put a great deal and even he could have the slightest of hope among all the kids.

To be honest I have never grown fond or likeness to Ushiro. He is a jerk and channels all of his rage with unfounded reasons to anyone that has a speck of optimism or certainty amidst this dreaded situation. I really cannot understand why he hates her little sister that much?

First of Id like to say this is a very sad series, its been a long time since I cryed from an anime and episode 8 with Chizu dieing did it, but I was curious about something, something keeps bugging me, this was only supposed to be a new experimental game from episode 1, do you think its possible no one has died its like just some virtual reality thing, not sure how to explain it anymore.
Any thoughts?
