For me Madoka is still an original product. Not for the story itself, but how the end product was (visuals, music, etc). I think the story itself was not so different from many others (like the post shows). In fact, I don't think there are many completely original stories after the ancient Greeks and Chinese. Ok, I'm half joking, but you get the idea.
Regarding the case of Kamen rider, I haven't seen it, but I suppose the similarities are not enough to be plagiarism, other wise we would already know. |

Apparently Nico Nico is streaming some kind of Madoka special on October 19th.

It's conjectured that this time the BD version of the anime will be broadcast since all the BDs are released, but there are questions on why this is being announced only two days prior. The broadcast has finished, and attracted about 810k viewers this time around. Last edited by Pachael; 2011-10-19 at 17:22. Reason: Broadcast finished |

I need to watch Ryuki however I kind of felt that the American adaptation Dragon Knight was a better "deconstruction" of tokusatsu shows, Kit wasn't a person who just decided that he wanted to be a hero but a troubled teen who just got caught up in something larger than himself. I cannot speak for Ryuki but I did feel that Dragon Knight was better at it than Ryuki. That is not to say that Shinji's and Madoka's archetype don't exist but it was just that Kit's situation felt more real to me. Madoka was kind of a flat character in the series although I admit that maybe I wasn't paying atention to her character development.

Ryuki is nothing like Madoka. That picture is just a part of Gorespammer's trolling campaign.
And most of those "similarities" are just ridiculous. I'm sure Ryuki introduced man-eating monsters. Or magical contracts. Or wishes you have to fight for. Or fights in a magical place normal people can't enter. Or people trying to heal their friends/lovers/family members. Or insanity. Or time travel. Etc. Don't buy this cheap trolling. People on 2ch were comparing Madoka and Ryuki much earlier than 4chan did, and nobody ever said it's a rip-off there. Things like yellow mahou shojo/rider dying first are just a references. Just like outfit colors in Nanoha copying mecha. And kamen rider fans in japan loved the references in Madoka. There are many fanarts with that theme. |

It's important to remember that stories like Gundam and Kamen Rider are so popular in Japan that they're ingrained in the culture to the point where anything could be a reference to them if you dig deep enough. Every culture is going to be like that. It's just easier to see those elements when you're on the outside looking in, especially when your knowledge of that culture is superficial.
Beyond that, it is impossible to create a truly original work because you're always influenced by something, especially narrative structure. Even if you think you've created something unique, how the audience interprets it is based on their own bias and experience. And if you want to be really scientific about it, the human brained is wired for pattern recognition. Almost to a fault actually, because we can see patterns that don't even exist.
