Seems like this is thread is still somewhat alive, well, thank you guys. I managed to finish Basilisk, which was ok, but not breathtaking, Shigurui seems to focos too much on violence and has a weak plot, at least that's what was written in the review I read.

Wolf's Rain is pretty dark, and it's a fantastic anime. Definitely one of my favorites.

And Wolf's Rain us okay, nothing that special in my opinion.

You might want to give Kurozuka a try; it's a vampire romance that extends across centuries. It's beautifully animated by Madhouse with an intriguing, though sometimes confusing and always gory plot.

The principal story line in Kure-nai is "disturbing," though not "dark" in the supernatural horror sense. It's definitely worth trying anyway if you've not seen it.

Looking back over the suggestions I'll add a second for Narutaru. I don't know if you watched it, or how many episodes you watched, but if you sampled just the first episode, you need to give it another try. Episode one of Narutaru is the most deceptive opening episode I've ever seen.

Regarding Narutaru, one thing I think people should be warned about is that it pretty much cuts off in mid story. If you don't mind being left totally hanging in the wind it's worth checking out.

Since it's been a while already - the typical question once again: Anything new out there?

Even though you asked for Anime, I feel almost obligated to recommend Vinland Saga. I wouldn't call it disturbing, but it's certainly mature and dark.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Welcome to the NHK are both excellent dark comedies.

I can't recommend Monster and Higurashi enough if you haven't gotten to them yet.

I didn't see Jin Roh on a quick skim through the thread, but it's a pretty gloomy movie.

I don't remember much of the whole series, but Episode #2 of Kino's Journey is a good dark short story. You can skip to it and not be missing any information, I promise you.

Boogiepop has a great ambiance but will leave you a bit confussled in the end.
