you're welcome, and sorry I'm not translating "from the start". It's too much work, unless there are a few more translators. I'm mostly translating the sequel while Defade is mostly translating the short stories for background knowledge. one day I might get back to it, but it will be at a very casual pace and I'll probably be working on something newer then, ie. other LNs.

Sion tries to kill Ryner then this woman comes out of Ryner to convince him not to go through it. Lucille shows up to refute her.

Ryner ends up still alive at the same cell in episode 2. Ferris comes in crashing thinking he left her for good dead or alive. She's very dere here.

The two elope leaning to who knows where.

The rest is a montage of war consuming the continent. Roland, Gastark and the God's Eyes group.

Mmm... The last few episodes definitely started leaving viewers behind again... Though not as bad as the first episode.

In general, I guess this was a 8/10.
The main con of the anime was that horrid first episode. Seriously, tried and failed way to start an anime.
The last few episodes were also a bit...
The end left everything open... Not a bad thing if there was a 2nd season, but I do wonder...

Other than these points, it was pretty interesting. The songs were nice, the story made you want to know more, the visuals not boring.
Would I buy the light novels? No. Too many volumes out for me to start now.

I thought it was a very powerful episode! I really liked that they took the time to talk out the Hero and the Lonely Demon (or whatever they call him in the Anime, Lonesome Devil, or something like that!) in the beginning. I definitely cried a little when Sion started crying and Ryner held out his hand and pleaded with him.

All in all, I've really enjoyed this series. It has some really powerful undercurrents that you don't find in a lot of stories anymore, which made it very enjoyable, albeit hard sometimes, for me to watch.

Also, I'm even happier that it turned me on to the great novels of this story. I haven't enjoyed a novel series, like I do this one, in a really long time.

So, of course, I really suggest for those who want to know what happens next to check out Baka-Tsuki where Larethian and Defade have been taking their own time to translate the next part of the story. I know they've both posted this numerous times, but hey it's worth posting on every page of this board!

what's with the carriage and Kiefer additions? Ferris seemed to be in her new clothes for Dai. In case no one noticed, the guy who blasted the guards before Ferris came was Lieral. And Ryner & Ferris are supposed to be running around in the city from the guards in volume 1 of Daiden. Guess they just want to smoothen things, though Kiefer's appearance was unacceptable! I doubt they have guts to create an original ending since day 1 due to the epicness; an original ending would just make it look stupid.

2ch was just screaming for explanations and 2nd season.

I guess the animators just wanted to throw a pseudo Kiefer-Ryner reunion somewhat, without somehow breaking canon too much. From a '24 episodes anime' mindset, it was almost cruel to throw all the moments of Kiefer's intentions to save Ryner, but not giving her any role in it whatsoever.

As for the carriage... I honestly thought the bandage thing was going to fly across the continent and reach Sion lol. I guess they just wanted to put a scene where it made sense for a Ryner monologue of "friend, I won't give up", since if he was running away from guards, his monologue won't be first and foremost about Sion first.

Episode 24 had the most painful 'sequel hook' since Code Geass, damn it.

Damn it for giving me hope that S2 will happen. ;_;

I still think one of the major things missing from the series was a consistent, bigger portrayal of the threesome bromantic friendship that Ryner/Sion ( with Ferris as a salad dressing ) seems to share.

For a series that is built upon the tragic friendship and destiny of those 2, there's also a sense of feeling that the 2 of them... wasn't really that great of friends that it keeps building them up to be.

Granted, part of that is contributed by how Ryner is shielded away from much of the truth, but even on the facade level, I thought it skipped a number of casual, less story-thick moments where Sion and Ryner were just casually being 'friends' together.

LOL, I agree! It did kinda miss out on that bromantic epicness part of the story. Haha, maybe they did to limit the gayishness

Considering, if there is a second season, that Ryner is going to spend his time going "Bah, my life sucks!! But Sion saved me! So I'm gonna save him no matter if it kills me!" ..ok maybe not quite like that. But, still, If I didn't read the books I might just be like "Whaaa?! F***, that! Just kill the bastard!"


My biggest disappointment after reading a bit of the books though: I wanted to see ZOHRA!!!!!!!!!!!! but did he make an appearance in DYD? Still it would have been fun to see more than just one clip with Germer and Azure Princess Group ....also I don't think it really showed just how strong Ryner really is either. I don't think it even mentioned him ever being in the "special elites", or whatever. either. Sorry!!

Legend of the Legendary Heroes… what a silly name. Like Greenery of the Green Vegetables or Bitterness of the Bitter Dark Chocolate. If names are supposed to attract people to an anime, then this sure does not help. I mean check out Slayers. Such a simple and direct name. There is even a band named after it. Yet in both cases the names are actually deceiving the viewers rather than preparing them for what they are about to watch. There is nothing epic in the first as there are no fountains of blood and gore in the second. What kind of a trolling technique is this anyway?

The similarities don’t end in the name-trolling alone of course, as Epic of the Epical Epicness is in fact 50% like Slayers. That is, a medieval comical adventure about imba wizards and warriors strolling the countryside trying to save the world one goof at a time. Well what about the other half then? Is at least that original? Nope, it is just a dried up version of Legend of Galactic Heroes (Sion is Reinhart, Ryner is Wenli) about several intrigues and power struggles amongst royalty for the domination of the world. And look at that, even that anime had “Legend” in its name. Do I see some accidental plagiarism here?

Anyways, Great of the Greater Greatness is for me a half-breed. Half Slayers and half LoGH that is. And on paper it sounds like the stuff of legends (oh, the irony). I mean, if you take the political intrigue of LoGH and combine it properly with the zany comedy of Slayers, you have an optical orgasm.

Well, the producers were unfortunately first timers and thus there was no orgasm in the final product. Just a half baked story about something that is left half-done. Yeah, we might as well cut all words in half, to fit with the rest of the show. Something like Leg-O-th-Legend-Her. Ah, that’s more like it!

STORY SECTION: 3

The story is in a nutshell about some dudes looking for some super items in order to help their friend to be a peaceful yet powerful king. Do they succeed? I have no idea as the story will be continued in egend-f-e-ary-oes.

So the story is a half-breed and half-done. Any half other than that? Why yes, it is also half-interesting. You see, a lot of episodes will be wasted on totally minor events and the others will have a really weird way of jumping back and forth in time and space. And I’m not talking about time travel, the narration is simply done without proper transition from one time frame to another. So what you basically have is a series about unfitting segments. On scene one, Sion is talking seriously with some scheming aristocrats. Suddenly, the scene changes five days later to Ryner, who will bored and half-asleep on a tree. Then the scene changes to ten years in the past where Sion and Ryner fight assassins who are chopping of the heads of their friends. Then the scene changes to fifteen years in the future, where Ferris eats dango and verbally torments Ryner. And then… the anime ends in the middle of… um … nowhere I guess.

If you got half of what I just wrote so far (oh, the irony 2) then you can easily tell the story in fact LESS than half-good.

CHARACTER SECTION: 5

But who cares about the story if the characters are great, right? I mean, who needs a story in K-On? If the cast are moe, comical, or bijin enough, most won’t even notice the objective of their adventure. So, are they legendary in anything like that? Nope, they are again half-interesting (damn that persistent irony!)

Let’s check the main characters. There is an aristocrat who is thrown in a middle of a power struggle amongst aristocrats. There is an imba friend of his who wants to help him. And there is a token bimbo.
… um, not much, is there?

What they are really good at is that they are a colorful bunch. Heck, half the duration is spent on getting to know them. In a slow and almost overkill way. What they eat, what they drink, what their favorite color is, how they fold a napkin and so on. Jeez, it really is like K-On in this regard!

But no, in reality it is also about an adventure where they are supposed to receive development and catharsis in the end of the road. Which of course they don’t because as I wrote (and hopefully it is amongst the half of which you still remember) the story is left incomplete. You will get to know a lot about their development up the present through numerous dialogues and flashbacks. But very little about their future because of the missing second half.

So all you are left with is:
-Sion, a dude with similar ambitions as Reinhart but hardly someone who achieves anything solid
-Ferris playing it cooldere and eating a mountain of dangos (Togame, cough)
-Ryner, a dude with a laser beam eye (no kidding) who is too bored to care about anything, yet gets to stroll around the world looking for magic trinkets and battling random goons with his Geass eye (Lelouch, cough) and inner demon releasing (Hollow Ichigo, cough). The series of course calls it Alpha stigma instead of Plot Armour, so who am I to judge that?

So as you can see, the cast is really a vivid bunch but not something you haven’t seen before and definitely not one fully looked into. There are others who exist as support of course (too many for its own good) but who cares if the main ones are not good enough. Most are too minor to even bother with.

ENJOYMENT SECTION: 3
But enough with all those halves. What about the adventure itself, is it good or not? Well, on paper it could be good if it was handled more properly. Like, with less time jumps and more action. The story is otherwise quite average in concept (go find magic trinkets to save the kingdom from evil) and the action part makes little to no sense. Not only there is too little of it in a series that it’s supposed to be “legendary” but it also has too much randomness. Random spells, random results, random power levels. And for Pete’s sake, what is the age advisory on this anime? One moment they are doing slapstick, the exact next they are beheading and gutting people alive. Jeez, where is some consistency in all that? It’s like two people were writing the script, an 8 year old girl-scout and an 18 year old heavy metal dude.

ANIMATION SECTION: 7
And now let’s talk a bit about this unimportant section most viewers pay too much attention to. It is good; the world building looks great with the medieval setting and all. Castles, uniforms, lightning look good. They are otherwise not exceptional in any way. Not artistic, not unique, not too smart in cinematography. The battle choreography sucks big time with all the random spells and power imbalances, while body motions felt slow as if the characters were bored to move around.

SOUND SECTION: 7
Another minor thing I rarely have much to talk about. The music score left me completely indifferent. Sound effects were ok I guess. Voice acting… Damn, so many dialogues about so many events I hardly cared about. They are also good too I guess. The only two voices that stand out are of course those of Ryner and Ferris. Ryner has the same voice actor and the same imba power in the same spot as “another very famous character” (anyone got any cough drops?). He was a major bait for most fans of “that other anime” and I’m sure most were greatly disappointed with this far less interesting character. As for Ferris… shit man, she is the otaku bait. A cooldere eating dango and slap-torturing poor Ryner. Need I say more? She is quite typical as the tropes go but who ever said otakus look for originality, hm?

VALUE SECTION: 1
What reason would anyone have to keep this anime in his collection? Apart from collective value or lack of elitism that it. None! Really, I mean it, none at all. It is messy and incomplete and slow and typical. All its good parts can be found in spades in Slayers and LoGH. Maybe if they ever make a sequel and create a Kai version of this, then we are going somewhere. Otherwise, it is a waste of time for veterans and just an average time killers for casuals.

Mediocrity of the Incomplete Typicals. Now that’s a more fitting name.

The explanation of the Hero and the Lonesome devil was interesting, i'm going to have to see that again to understand it though, i'm guessing it relates to how Sion and Ryner are.

So they fight it out, Ryner should start to use more than izuchi, especially against those experiments, i liked how he told Sion that only Ferris could kill him, strengthens his feelings for her.

Little confused at the conversation when that lady appeared, now i dea who she is, apparently know Lucille, also Lucille is the weaver of all formulas? Not surprised Sion didn't kill Ryner, i don't think he ever could have done it.

Ryner waking up in the same cell was nostalgic, my favorite seen was when Ferris broke down the wall and embraced him crying, She really has grown as a person to be able to cry like coming from having no feelings at all.

So they flee, surprised to see Kiefer help him escape, the ending really hints that there would be a sequel, at least to me it did, and i sure hope they make a second season.

Well, overall, I loved the series. However, the last few episodes were extremely confusing, with no answers to whatever was happening onscreen. It was nice to watch, if I turned off my brain, but I have no idea what happened or what is going on anymore.

The biggest weakness of this series was the explaination for things and events. The anime did not do that well at all. It was fun to watch the story, but I guess I will never really understand it or what was going on unless I read some cliffnotes of the novels.

This latest episode was quite confusing, and they left it way too open. In a way, where it screams for season 2 but it could also just end there and leave rest for our imagination ... Goddamnit. I really wish for S2 but something tells me we ain't getting one ...

I found this series entertaining and enjoyable in overall even though it had it's weak moments, especially nearing the end. Simply put, it was fun to watch and that's what matters.
