It hasn't been totally great IMO so far: Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire albums were pretty weak, as far as the big names go... but I'm liking the upcoming Animal Collective album (Strawberry Jam) a whole lot.
Deerhoof, Battles, Menomena... those albums have been getting most of my play so far this year. |

I would say that a lot of artists new albums this year failed to live up to some of their previous works, like MM, AF, The National, and The Figurines of the top of my head but I still found most of them to be enjoyable.
I still gotta give the new Battles and The New Pornographers a listen along with a list of stuff. |

Their best album to date seems to be I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.

My favorite so far is most probably World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland. Other than that I found almost none of the albums this year of artists I've listened to before especially great. e.g. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank wasn't anywhere close to Modest Mouse's earlier works imo. It's similiar for Wilco, Explosions in the Sky, Do Make Say Think, Björk, NIN, Dark Tranquillity, Bright Eyes etc. I'm not saying that they're bad either, it's just that all of those artists made at least one much better album before imo.
But there's still stuff I have yet to check out as well, I'm holding high hopes for the new 65daysofstatic. ^^ Ah, yeah, there were two more awesome albums this year so far. Crippled Black Phoenix - A Love of Shared Disasters and Tocotronic - Kapitulation. I also enjoyed the new Melt-Banana and Boris with Michio Kurihara - Rainbow.

I concur with I'm Wide Awake It's Morning Being Bright Eyes' best album.
And now that I've listened to it I can say that I ain't disappointed with 65daysofstatic's newest work. The Destruction of Small Ideas is pretty great, comes close to The Fall of Math even. edit: Oh damn, Tocotronic is just so awesome. Kapitulation may just be my favorite German album ever. Usually I'm the first to criticize German text, but those lyrics aren't just great....they're godly and beyond.

Well I guess you can chalk up another disappointment this year for Sunset Rubdown's new album Random Spirit Lover, I did enjoy it but it wasn't near as good as last years Shut Up am I Dreaming.
Morcheeba's Deep Diver more then made up for it though, It's amazing. Morcheeba + Thomas Dybdahl = . It was also a nice surprise to hear Cool Calm Pete on a track. Sharkey and C-Ray Waltz was also awesome, it's easily the best rap album I've heard since Lupe Fiasco. |

I didn't like the latest 65dos. They have yet to put together a really sharp and excellent recording that takes advantage of their sound - in fact this is easily the weakest-sounding of their albums - and the writing got more ponderous and boring.

Oh yeah, since no one else will have heard of this, I have to put in a shout out for the upcoming Pygmy Lush - Bitter River album... The CD is not yet out but I heard the cassette version. Sounds like Tom Waits and Jesus Lizard flailing around all over the place: noisy, acoustic, aggressive, lethargic, just everything wrapped in one with tons of personality.
