The Real Reason for Evangelion's Bad Ending

The Real Reason for Evangelion's Bad Ending: Corruption in Gainax

Despite Evangelion being one of the highest grossing media franchises in history with a total revenue of $12,000,000,000, fans have always wondered why the last episodes along with Evangelion: Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion had such bad endings with poorly written and executed scripts and even excess reuse of stock clips from previous episodes.

The truth has finally come out: corruption and scandals in Gainax.

The 1st incident involved Gainax President Tomohiro Maki being arrested on “semi-compulsory obscenity,” after taking nude pictures of a teenage girl working for Gainax as a voice actress.

This scandal caused the company's stock value to plunge.

The 2nd incident occurred in 1995, when the company was audited and later found to have concealed 1,560,000,000 yen of profits. Then President Takeshi Sawamura and tax accountant Yoshikatsu Iwasaki were arrested on July 13th, 1999 for tax evasion and fraud.

The 3rd incident involved the laundering of profits into the bank accounts of non-performing and redundant employees by falsifying documents to give them suspiciously high salaries for those specific jobs. When Hideaki Anno found out about this, he resigned from his position as the chairman of the board and founded his own company: Khara Studios to remake Evangelion as a 4 part movie series.

And the last incident involved Takeda-san, a close friend of Anno's and an executive of Gainax, borrowing 100,000,000 yen from him to payoff debts owed by the company due to insufficient funds which were lost to the previous money laundering schemes in exchange for selling the copyright and royalty distribution to Khara Studios. But, after paying off the debts to keep the company solvent, Takeda-san did not transfer the copyright and royalty distribution to Khara and instead sold it to another company.

Takeda-san then created many companies with Gainax in their names to launder the profits.

When Hideaki Anno found out in 2016 that the copyright and royalty distribution for Evangelion were sold to another company and that his loan was not being repaid, he requested a provisional garnishment from Gainax on August 1st 2016 (which was implemented on August 26th) and sued Gainax for 100 million yen. The case was won by Khara on June 23rd, 2017.

Anno has since completed his Rebuild of Evangelion movie series, with the last film: Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, being released on March 8, 2021. The new film series is a success because Hideaki Anno is the sole proprietor of his new business and he has made sure that there is no corruption in his company when the films were being made.

Rebuild of Evangelion, which has 4 movies and is a total of 457 minutes long has grossed $228,025,058 on a budget of $50,000,000, making the film series a box office success, having made 4.56 times its production budget.

Because of all of his profits, Hideaki Anno has become a wealthy man with a current net worth of $5,000,000, the rest of the money from the revenues earned by Evangelion are stored in his Khara Studios corporate account.

Because of the president and tax accountant concealing profits from Hideaki Anno for the purpose of evading taxes and laundering the money, and the profits lost to the 2 other money laundering schemes, Hideaki Anno could not reinvest the profits of his franchise for the purpose of properly completing his project which resulted in the bad endings for the last episodes of Evangelion, Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, and End of Evangelion.
