Oh, I almost forgot another good one. The movie series Gekijouban Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners were made from the same creator of Fate/Stay Night. It was quite an intense series. The current series of Psycho-Pass seems to be heading that way.

Depending on how far back you want to go, MegaZone 23 is pretty intense and has a romance angle too.
The original Bubblegum Crisis was outstanding!
And Crest/Banner of the Stars was pretty good as well.
And there's always Akira.
