Just saw the last episode. Very good to watch.

Spoiler for Ep.26 Final:

I was a bit surprise that Van was in his final form and was expecting the progressive fight between him and Luke's group that would have lead to him taking that form. The fight was a little short but I enjoyed watching it non the less. Van pretty much took that damage unharmed in the begining of the fight, but once Tear notice that he was combined with Loralie and started to sing did the tide of the fight turn. I really enjoyed when Jade used Indignation on Van to finally weaken him for Luke to land the last blow, but I was expecting Luke to use his Radiant Howl to finish the fight. After the obligatory talk and appearent "please come back alive" talks, the next scenes take on what you see at the end of the game. There is an epilouge that shows some of the characters and what they are doing, but the ending scene is where the group meets to talk about Luke. As for the ambiguous ending, it is there too. So for those looking to see if Luke came back or Asch, that animators and writers leave that up in the air. Overall a very enjoyable series to watch. The anime adaption was done fairly well, though I wish the fights would have been done a little longer.

It's the final boss! LOL, this series was wayyy to game like, especially the group fights and stuff. Anyways, didn't get what I had hope for. Same unsatisfying ending as the game. Sorry but it was so lame and boring, it just left one HUGE gap. So at the end Luke and Ash merged or something? Who came back at the end? The promise was that of Lukes, the voice was that of Ash, and his eyes looked like a soulless being......

They made Asch and Luke fuse! YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I WANTED THIS! I WANTED THIS! TEARS SAYS SHE LOVES LUKE!(more like like but still she says "Luke suki=like)

The battle was amazing! INCREDIBLE! BRILLIANT! Natalia's light arrows, JADE'S 4 SPELLS----------->EXPLOSION(FIRE), ICE ARROWS(ICE PICKLES RAINING DOWN), ENERGY SAP(I THINK IT WAS THAT lighting attack) AND INDIGNATION! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! MY FAVORITE! I think that it is too bad he did not use mystic cage but oh well!

Anise's BLOOD MOON HOWL! NICE! NICE!

LUKE+GUY= GREAT SWORD FIGHTING!
MY LAST COMMENTS ARE: This is the best one of RPG I have yet seen in anime. My first one was Tales of Eternia BUT THIS BEAT IT BY 100%. Not only length wise but also action, story depth wise, magic and fonic artes presentation, monsters were nice but not enough of different types as much a the game, WORLD WAS GORGEOUS, machine design were good too, BAD WAS THE BLOOD CENSOR WHICH I FIND STUPID (they put some but censor it a little with color wise in mind) and SHOULD HAVE PUT MORE LOVE between characters other than the Tears x Luke thing or Natalia x Asch which not much happened other than feeling exchange.

...As an episode overall, it was good. Though there were many problems with the episode, and as a great last episode, was just disappointing...
By the way, the oh-so-scary BGM at the beginning + seiza sitting from Van began the episode in a very comedic way. Also don't see why Jade spun his glasses...
And you know, if you HAD the moves, why didn't you use them before, you guys?!

The battle was well animated, thankfully, but what... again?
Tear uses sing and everything is settled, yay~
It was already bad when they did this once, but on the last boss... She sings and he just proceeds to die with ease.
And hearing that type of song while battling... Tension isn't rising, nope.
And the BLOOD!

And then two years pass and no one seemed to have aged. Then we get a scene where they tell Tear to sing, and after she finishes, they proceed to leave (kind of rude...), only to stop because Luke came back from the dead somehow (this season of animes use the spirit convention too many times...) with longer hair.

Apparently, from the above posts, there is a debate about who it is. Asch is dead, so it can't be him... Oh wait, he was actually alive.

Ya~y, it ended. The part where the party bid farewell was a bit emotional, but the whole thing wasn't that good...
Time to wait for the overall thoughts thread...

So this was the so-called wonderful Tales of the Abyss story, huh...

Based on the theory of the contamination effect, it is Luke that is alive. Another big hint is that when Luke/Ashe appear, he told Tear it is because of our promise. Luke is the one who made the promise, so it would be him. Ask to why he sound like Ashe while it is Luke, it is simply. Luke body disappear and the forton enter Ashe body. So naturally it will sound like Ashe since it is Ashe body after all. AS to why it took 2 year, no idea but I guess it will take a long time for a dead body to regenerate to something.

As to why Tear sing during this battle? It is the same way as the game. They couldn't hurt Van at all so Tear has to use her final song to cancel out Van's power so they can beat him. Kept in him Van can take a hell lot more punishment since his body is no longer that of human.

His voice was already more Asch-like at the beginning of the episode. Actually, no, it started getting deeper at the end of the previous one.

what did each anime character said to Luke after he announced he was leaving the party???

Well personally I would say that they fused together rather than simply Luke taking over Asch's body hence I believe this Luke/Asch have the memories of both Luke and Asch, making him the ultimate being! The last part was a joke btw

Overall, a fair adaption to a good video game.

In the ending scene, was Luke/Asch's line "That's what we promised, right?" in the game? I can't seem to remember whether Luke/Asch actually said anything when he appeared.

Beside in the anime, Tear actually got close to Luke/Asch whereas in the game, I remembered she just stood there.

The most plausible explanation will be he's Luke in Asch's body, same to what I felt in the game.

It's a pity they didn't bring Tear's pendant back. I was hoping that somehow Luke/Asch will appear with it. But I guessed they just followed the game exactly.

Well, it's exactly what I expected it to be.

Shit, I was hoping they would have made the "entity" (dunno what exactly to call him) a little more clear. It's obvious from the sparklies that Luke disappeared, but that the DAMNED BODY TWITCH added an additional level of confusion.
Like Peanutbutter, I'd like to believe that Asch had already kicked the bucket and Luke has taken up the vacancy in that husk of his.

I was also hoping for the "where are they now" montage long after the ED. They could have at least taken more liberties with that.

I definitely prefer the game ending to this one. The music choice i think was poor at the end. Should have been more dramatic. Other then that i liked this series and how it followed the story line. I do agree that the epilogue should have been expanded on more. The major reason why i watched this was to see how they would handle the ending, but it just ended up copying the game ending with a poorer choice in music.

from someone who played the game and followed the debate the other side of the argument is that Ashe made a promise to natalia as well ( to marry her as well as to come back alive before he goes off to hold that army). I am one who always thought it was luke, since ashe dies even luke feels his presence vanish, and that loreli just fused their bodies so luke could live on. As for the time skip it wasnt 2 years, i think it was just 1 if that all they really say is that its his coming of age ceremony. Tear also says she loves him before party ways. As for when the reunite he says basically the same thing. Tear asks why are you here, and luke replys cus this place has a nice view of hod and besides i made a promise then it ends the same way.


Oh and to touch on what someone said earlier luke and ashe do have different dominate hands Luke is left handed and Ashe is right handed i believe.
the final battle is better in the game as you have to finish van off with your special and i always thought tear singing the final hymn was a nice touch

Then you heard wrong. It's "ni NEN". Ni sen means 2 thousand or 2 lines or 2 whatever kanji sen is, and Ni sai means 2 years old.
