The Ultimate Sacrifice
What I'm looking for is very specific, and somewhat depressing. I'm looking for an anime, or manga, in which a character makes 'the ultimate sacrifice', i.e they give/risk their life in order to save another. What's weird about my request is that I'm not bothered whether the character survives or not.
This doesn't mean that the anime/manga has to completely revolve around said scenario; it can be a major part in the storyline. I suppose that there has to be a degree of romance within. Particular anime/manga that match the sort of description are; - off the top of my head Spoiler for Soul Eater:
Spoiler for Change 123:
Spoiler for Busou Renkin:
Spoiler for Omamori Himari:
I can't help thinking I'm masochistic requesting anime/manga of this nature Any suggestions would be brilliant! |

Seirei no Moribito, in addition to generally being excellent, revolves around the sacrifice of one of the lead characters. An excellent choice overall.

I seriously lol'd.
Well its only like 4 episodes but Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal has what your looking for. With only 4 episodes its hard to have strong character development to feel really emotional towards it, but there is a sacrifice. |

I'll add Kannazuki no Miko[Might not seem it at the start but has it, though Yuri warning ] and Shakugan no Shana[first season]. Maybe Canaan and Bakemonogatari though doesn't happen early here either really. One anime movie that should fit assuming it follows the game's plot then .hack//GU Trilogy, I haven't gotten around to the movie yet, but I know it was a major part later in the .hack//GU game series. Also not quite what you're looking for, but I think you'd enjoy Mai-hime based off this post, just in a certain ironic kind of way .

Great work people, thanks for your efforts. Currently 1 episode into Seirei no Moribito, and loving it. All the other suggestions are on my 'to-watch list', so I'll get round to them.
If there are any more that people know of, please list them! |

Chrono Crusade.
Am I really the first person to mention it? Oh... Fullmetal Alchemist? Pretty heavy with this in that anime. Those are the examples that leap first to my mind, but there are tons of anime that have this show up. Especially if you don't require the sacrifice to result in actual death. Starblazers has it happen in the first episode (in the English dub anyways- it's a pretty good localization). Read Or Die both the OVAs and ROD the TV Ranma 1/2 (at least in the manga) Full Metal Panic Crest of the Stars Neon Genesis Evangelion has this a few times. Heh.. Mirai Nikki... I'd suggest starting with Chrono Crusade Then try Fullmetal Alchemist, Read Or Die OVA, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Of course, you might want to google the list I gave and pick one that appeals to you in other ways as well.

I second Full Metal Panic. Two scenes come to mind from the first series.
Spoiler for Scenes.:
Samurai 7 has some scenes where comrades sacrifice themselves in order for others to live. You could also try Victory Gundam. Pretty much the female pilots from this series pays the ultimate price one way or another while protecting someone. |

A few minutes contemplation suggests that many shows have this feature. However I think there are at least two types of shows that fit your general request.
One type places the willingness for self-sacrifice at the core of the story like Moribito does. I'd add Kurozuka, Noein, Real Drive, and perhaps Kure-nai and Ergo Proxy to this list. The pilots in Yomigaeru Sora: Rescue Wings must contemplate sacrificing themselves to save others on every mission. In other cases self-sacrifice represents just one event in a larger plot as in Twelve Kingdoms, Kemono no Sou-ja Erin, Toshokan Sensou, Monster, Saiunkoku Monogatari, Mouryou no Hako, or Mononoke Hime. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and PlanetES might also qualify here. Even Dennou Coil touches on these issues at a number of moments. The Apothecary in Mononoke might be willing to sacrifice himself to defeat the demons he faces, but I think he believes he's so superior to his supernatural and human enemies that he's invincible. The same probably applies to Twenty Faces in Nijuu Mensou no Musume. In his most angsty moments, Harima might consider sacrificing his life for Tenma-chan in School Rumble, as might Hanai for Yakumo, and both might be stupid enough to do so. (OK, I'll admit I might offer to sacrifice myself for Yakumo, too.)

There are some real moments in Higurashi especially in the one-shot Nienagashi... But yeah Bakemonogatari is a good example

The record of a fallen vampire is a manga that fully embraces the meaning of ultimate sacrifice, in more than one characters.
Fullmetal alchemist is also another great example, as is One Piece, right off the bat. |
