Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu
Code Geass
Full Metal Panic

I think you'll like all three of these. Code Geass and FMP are both mechas (They are very different). Code Geass is very similar to Death Note in certain aspects.

I recommend to you "Cowboy Bebop" and "Samurai Champloo". Two simply amazing anime series'.

"Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu" is also a beautiful anime. I would also like to highly recommend that to be in your list.

It's proberly a bit different than the things on the list, but maybe Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha) and it's two sequals (A's and StrikerS). It has action, comedy and small mentions or indicators of romance (though the shippers may kill me for saying it's not obvious that whichever pair is obviously there).

Negima, more heavy on the comedy and kind of romance but also has some action.

People have already recommended The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, very good anime so it's recommended but very little action if it has to have a lot.

Hayate no Gotoku, very funny with plenty of romantic bits and quite a few action scenes.

Maybe I'll recommend something more serious. How about Monster or Higurashi no Naku Koro ni? Both are great thriller/mystery anime series. And definitely check out Code Geass. Or Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu and Hayate no Gotoku! if you want something funny.
