Well, even after turning her into a slave (so that her stat growth would be better), she didn't really improve that much (her stats remained the same even after her level was reset and only started improving when she became Naofumi's slave; make of that what you will). It was only after the martial arts grandma came around that she had someone who could properly train her.

He thought that Heroes couldn't copy this form of martial arts that's "meant to turn ordinary people into heroes" until after Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki have been recruited. Then, while teaching them Melmark's alphabet and helping them improve, they discovered and pointed out to him the EP meter (which is like the mesh between MP and SP). So Naofumi was able to perform some of the moves of that martial art to an extent (fortifying his defense and, when he was temporarily disarmed, piercing through defense).
