So everybody hates the Matoba clan, not just Natsume. Yet most exorcists suck up to them because they're still the strongest clan.
I liked that Natori protected Natsume entirely from the shadows. Ding ding ding! The next episode preview proves you right.

Oh gods, this was another beautiful episode. The ending got to me even more so than the second episode's, and it transitioned into the ED so well, I didn't realize anything had changed until halfway through. I'll definitely be watching this one at least a couple more times. This season has been so good to us so far.

Ep 05
Agreed about it being another good episode ... and an unexpectedly thought provoking one. Especially the youkai's comments and reasoning on the forbidding of the circle magic being right, but from an unexpectedly different angle. Good stuff. Gotta say though ... it's a good thing the youkai Taki spoke with was like that instead of ... well ... something else. Scary. I was dreading the outcome when she thought about it in the first place.

I am glad the ED finally looks like an ED I'd expect from Natsume.
A very nice episode. Another case of seeing how youkai and human interactions can have aftermaths to them. I mean can hardly blame the youkai for falling for Taki. Not the first and not the last to basically get attached to a human, but unable to really do anything going forward. It's less bad with Taki than other people and youkai we've seen. She can at least use the circle to communicate with them. But in general it is tough. I think the rabbit youkai made a fair point. Things like that circle or the book of friends can be medicine or poison. Whether they are beneficial or harmful depends on the individual's point of view. They are tools at the end of the day. Maybe some might consider them forbidden tools or some youkai might see them as terrible things. But...they can still be treasures. Taki and Natsume can still look at what they've inherited in a positive light. Also it is nice to see how Taki hasn't let the past drag her down. She had a horrible experience with that outright evil youkai in season 2. But in the end when someone needs her help...she wants to help. Like Natsume she can't turn her back. Glad we got a Taki focused episode this season.

That was wonderful! Even if I did keep misreading the subs and thinking Taki was visited by "traveling rabbis."
I believe Taki is still the only one of Natsume's human friends who knows about the book. Her grandfather's circle is every bit as much her "magical inheritance" as the book is his, and I like that they have that connection. Going into the episode, I was concerned that the circles would go away, but they're not. And Taki meeting Nyanko-sensei in Reiko-form was funny. Did you notice the Nyanko-shaped cloud over the house? |

"Fell in love" might be overstating the case, but yes he did develop an attachment to her.
That's a common theme in this series - beings who come from worlds so different that they know nothing about each other, only to find they have a connection. |

Really loved this episode. Although I doubt it was the real reason the circle technique was forbidden, I liked the way the Youkai saw it as an act of kindness. When Youkais fall in love or get attached to humans, they often end up getting hurt, and we've seen that plenty of times in the series. Their lifespans are just too different.

Episode 6:
Well that was an interesting episode. Natsume got involved with a youkai that knew Reiko in the past. I really like how they crafted the chemistry between Reiko and that youkai during the flashback as well. "Human game.

I also really enjoyed the interaction between the youkai and Reiko in the past - definitely the highlight of the episode for me. Another sweet-sad episode.... Continuing to enjoy the season.

Really liked the Youkai this week. I once again found myself wondering why Reiko never visited the Youkai she befriended. Why did she even make the book of friends in the first place?
Indeed...

I really wonder about what happened to Reiko and why she didn't visit back with so many youkai. Some of them weren't too friendly, but some were. And she did have some fun with the better ones.
At some points I wonder if somehow she did know about what would happen and the Natsume we know. Since the book sure as heck has done a nice job of being a "book of friends" for Natsume. He's gained so many good allies (both human and youkai) thanks to that book coming into his life. I liked Hidaka. She was a nice youkai. Wish her the best in finding a nice and lively place. She was too darn cheerful for that empty valley. Though kind of a sad thing with her and Reiko. Reiko knew the game well enough from watching other people play.....but she didn't know how it was supposed to end. After all she probably never was invited by any kids to play with them. So had to make her own rules.

Quite an usual case with the mysterious mask and youkai this week. Anyway, Natsume was able to solve the problem like usual and is able to enjoy the festival afterwards. That's like killing two birds with one stone.
Spoiler:
