Plot description:

When the two girls meet, magic begins. Hazuki Kagimura loves stories, an orthodox girl who is overly imaginative. Because her relationship with her new family does not go well, the environment sends her toward the stories in which she spends her days. One day after school, Hazuki gets lost among the bookcases of the library, leading her to a mysterious school where meets Shizuka Tsuchimikado. It is a magic school where girls (called "mädchen") are selected by the magical texts from which the world's stories are born. Hazuki herself is said to be chosen by the book of Cinderella. In order to become a true magician, Hazuki becomes friends with Shizuka and begins her new life at the school.

Crunchyroll is starting fresh this morning with the winter 2018 anime season additions. The latest is Maerchen Maedchen, which begins its stint at witchcraft school today, January 11 at 8:00am PST.

This isn't anything special. The setup is already textbook as it is, magic highschool fantasy story about a girl getting sent into another world. Hazuki, the shy bookworm lead, acts like a female self-insert character for the male otakus to schlock into, she monologues about her life too much as if she's the player of a game. The presentation itself is poor, the premiere is already done dime a dozen in other similar shows and I can already see how the tropes will play depending on where it's going.
But that's not to say it doesn't have some redeemable qualities though: I like the international cast, the fairy tale concept is theoretically interesting but I feel that some foreign Maedchen should have their own powers borrowed from the fairy tales born in their countries of origin, for example the Turkish Yumilia Qazan using her unfitting Japanese-oriented Shuten Doji magic. The sexual fanservice looked fairly tame nudity-wise though the naked running scene sort of dragged out, but it was funny as hell. I like Hazuki's voice a lot, she sounds like Kana Hanazawa except not really, but I could say that the audiovisuals are above average at best, not something on par with Katana Maidens in that department but they're fairly serviceable.

I really like Tomohiro Matsu's work on Mayoi Neko Overrun which is a pretty decent sitcom and I heard good things about Listen to Me Girls, I'm a Father!, but this is unimpressive so far. I seriously hope it'll try to do something genuinely fun next episode and I'll stick to it if only because I like magical girl shows generally.

You know, on hindsight its actually amazing we haven't had an isekai story with yuri vibes before (If there's some novel that does this, I don't know about it). It doesn't look spectacular, but it does look fun, and I like Hazuki already, and her "friend" already looks cute judging from the preview, so sure, lets give it a go. The only real gripe I have with this is that Kantoku's designs don't have seem to have translated as well in this as they did on henneko.

^For actual animated series sure, there is a quite a few isekai light novels that go the yuri route. Currently quite a few novels gender change the MC from male to female to go the yuri route.
I’m not really into them so I can’t give you a lot of info, a lot of them fall flat for me, then again I’m not into yuri really, but if the story is good I’ll keep reading/watching regardless.
I did try watching this episode though, unfortunately the story wasn’t enough to catch my attention, I’ll keep watching the next few episodes to see if it interests me.

Uwah! This was written by the guy who died last year. The one that did Oni-ai and Neko Overrun.
That makes me want to watch it just because this is his last work.

...The only problem is the low budget (frozen ED, OP reuses stuff from the episode)
and the rather annoying protagonist who doesn't really look or act like her setting.
And it just wasn't interesting to watch at all.

That said, I might just watch it as a RIP to the author...

And what is it with the long blonde-hair girl? I swear that there was another anime with the same original character designer (Kantoku) that looked exactly the same last season...

Well this first episode was definitely moving at a clip. Though I can get wanting to hit that stopping point. Still made it feel a little hurried.

I swear if the MC's mother knew about all that magic stuff she really should have made her message less cryptic. Instead of "find your own story" go with "find the magical book, called an original that will give you powers and let you go to a magical school."

I stick with this one. The MC was a bit of letdown first but I will know that this improve, because I have read one or two WN/LN like this. Also, Isekai with Female MC for now is a rather uncommon where the genre is plagued with generic ones and others that try to make something different and fail.

Well at the end I'm only a fan of shoujo-ai and yuri genre, so also is that. For that I can oversight two or three tropes. Really I would like more Isekai or LN adaptations with female MC in future.

Then allow me to introduce you to the world of Web Novels that later turn in Light Novels with female MC in Isekai territory and others. Sometimes the plot is generic but fun to read, sometimes is interesting ideas but wasted and others is really interesting or plain fun. I hope for some of these for a (DECENT) adaptation in the future.

A downgrade that Isekai with female MC have is: if the worn-out trope of normal Isekai with males is "I'm in other world with OP powers and get a harem" in the female ones is "I'm in a otome game world where I'm the rival of MC and I have to escape of my tragic destiny".

Now this makes me think.. Shizuka is trying to make Hazuki a strong mage, because she needs the help of Hazuki to win the torunament? - if that is true.. is Shizuka not strong enough to win the competition with her own powers?

Since the author's apparently dead, even if this thing is a masterpiece and hit, they won't be able to sell new light novels over it. The budget may have been adjusted accordingly.

And frankly so far this thing isn't, at least if the anime is anything to go by. The MC is kind of cliche, klutzy type . And yeah, of course she has a Super-Strong ability . At least the characters are cute, but I really must ask why people think the opposite color eye reflections make characters cuter .

As for episode 2, oh many, could they have gone for a more cliched development of the tsundere silent type saying exactly the wrong thing, then they make up within a few minutes...

At least it is better than Smartphone ... wait, maybe that's just because there aren't significant male characters.

Oh, I'm reading one of those myself, and yeah, I want it to be given a chance. At the very least it has to be more deserving than Smartphone dammit! Though it is disadvantaged by
1) being published by something called Earth Star rather than say Kadokawa
2) it has a female MC so all the males may find it a bit hard to put themselves in the MC's shoes (in fact, for the most part, males are not treated too kindly in that story).
3) in some places it is not suitable for imaging. Though the comicalization did a great job on concentrating on portions that are, and given how anime adaptations are one-cour these days, they can probably be quietly cut out since they are secondary bits.

As for male MCs in general, I've come to the conclusion that unless the storywriter intends a romance from the start, they do more harm than good. Basically, the female Acceptable Personality Gamut is larger than the male - you can have female characters take on male-ish roles much more easily than the reverse. There are a few places that only males can go, but they aren't really good MC personalities and so I cannot really consider them losses.

As for mixed parties, the moment writers let even one male into the story, it starts to distort. For one thing, the pressure is now on to make some kind of romance, even if the writer is no good at it. Further, even before the romance is on, the pressure is on to give the Male a disproportionate share of the really good abilities. Even if the author manages to avoid this temptation or even deliberately makes Male weak, the pressure is on to give the male character some good moments with whether his abilities would fairly speaking warrant that good moment pushed into secondary importance.

So, go right ahead with all-girl stories.
