Super Robot Anime

Ok after playing some super robot wars I am REALLY interested in some of this stuff.
I just watched all of macross (DYRL, frontier, zero, SDF, plus)

I'm watching G gundam atm and have a list I am going through atm.

Dancouga Nova, mazinkaiser, shin mazinger, various getter robo anime, gravion, godannar, etc...

What I really want to know more than anything is if the ORIGINAL dancouga show is worth watching. Old shows don't bother me too much, I did watch the original macross and enjoyed it. Also if ANYONE has watched the getter robo series, what timeline does it follow for the various shows? There's quite a few ovas so I am a bit confused on what to watch first.

P.S Also if anyone else has any robot anime they want to share too. No TTGL (already seen), or any gundam (I know what to look for for that).

I'm not the biggest fan, but I'd suggest watching...
Gundam SEED - the only Gundam anime I really got into... I could acknowledge the quality of some of the other series I tried, but they all had some aspect to them that I couldn't stomach (and so Seed is still the only gundam I've finished watching)
RahXephon - watch this one and just skip evagelion
ehh... if you've seen those two, you've seen basically every mecha anime in existence, lol. There's some more I'd say are worth watching but I don't feel any urgent need to recommend them.

edit: I didn't read your post closely enough, so just forgive the gundam, lol.

haha no problem. Rahxephon is great actually. I completely forgot about it, I will chalk it up on my to watch list.

I never really got into them but like I said, I've been into the SRW games lately and some of the robots really got me interested in the shows they come from

Just following wiki will give you a timeline of Getter Robo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getter_Robo

The original Dancougar can get a little repetitive, but if you love YAAATTEYARUZEEE!!!, then maybe you should watch and judge for yourself.

I highly recommend:

Gaogaigar and Gaogaigar FINAL, Just watch.

Martian Successor Nadesico and Prince of Darkness OVA, one of the best mecha space operas ever.

Vandread S1 and 2, another great mecha space opera, it has a famous single episode that probably had most people crying in a mecha anime. But its mostly comedy and awesome.

Eureka 7, beautiful is the word to describe it.

Turn A Gundam, the best Gundam in story and character, and if you truly appreciate mecha, Turn A is the most beautiful Gundam ever.

Sousei no Aquarion, you can say its unique, but at the same time you can't, its just great.

Giant Robo, when you ask for an awesome mecha anime, most likely people will point to this.

Big O, SHOOOOW TIIMEE!!

Daikumaryu Gaiking, it will get insanely awesome after FACE OPEN!! comes in.

King Gainer, requires you to appreciate Tomino's wacky style.

And you absolutely must watch Top wo Nerae! and Top wo Nerae! 2, otherwise known as Gunbuster 1 and 2/Diebuster. GAINAX's greatest masterpieces.

Of course people would say Evangelion is GAINAX's masterpiece, that's probably because they haven't see Top wo Nerae! But yea Evangelion is good as well.
--------------

Next, for on going anime, Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo will provide you with some entertainment.

But, Shin Mazinger Z, miss it and you're not a true mecha fan. It is the most badass a mecha anime has ever gotten.

Alright, these are some I remember for the moment, if the list is not enough, I'll extend it.

EDIT: Oh and you should watch SRWOG: Divine Wars if you haven't.

Try Gundam: The 08th MS Team. Also, zoid's chaotic century isnt that bad. For something more recent you might want to watch Gundam 00 though.

oh wait, isn't the title supposed to be Super Robot Anime only & does NOT include any REAL Robot titles in this place like Gundam, Votoms, Macross, etc.

its supposed to be about Mazinger-Z, Getter, Gaogaigar, etc. only

yeah no gundam. I know what to watch already and I know the plot so I'm kinda veering away from that for now. Thank C.A that list helps a lot. I've already seen a couple of them like king gainer and aquarion but a couple of those seem interesting so I will check in!

Good series all-around are Heroic Age,New Getter,Getter Robot: the last day,Fafner and (while not really mecha) Tekkaman Blade.
If you don't mind things that follow for the most part the "monster of the week" style there are Dendoh and (new) Reideen.

We seem to have forgotten GunxSword lol

Anyway its great to see that SRW has created another mecha fan. SRW is really the driving force behind the mecha genre and also preserves the genre itself. People no longer know much about old school mecha, but SRW reminds the fans.

Forgot Z.O.E 2167 - Idolo and Escaflowne too; and while I didn't see it I'll say the Bokurano anime too.
Last suggestion at the moment are the Patlabor movies even if they are RR

In that case, I must recommend Raijin-oh and especially Grendizer since he's going through some Mazingers.

Are we going to end up recommending everything or what lol

Only the essentials. Ideon is a brainfucked pilgrim that must be taken along side EVA. See them back to back if possible.

Grendizer must be watched not just for its attacks, you must watch it for the amounts of spinning Duke Freed goes through while getting into Grendizer or when Cross Docking. And of course for the OP.

Also its good time for Great Mazinger since they're subs for it now.

The love for old school mecha lives!

Troilism is lucky to have such insane mecha fans in this forum lol

If we want old school, I can't stress God Mars enough. A Super Robot drama where the protagonist must be kept enough so that a bomb that he is born with will not detonate and destroy Earth must be good right ?

I've only watched one episode of Godmars, when I switched to a Malaysian channel, in Malaysian dubs lol

Recognised it on SRWD, and only there I learnt its story.
