Starship Troopers: Invasion [CGI]

ANN: CG Appleseed's Aramaki to Direct Starship Troopers

Sony Pictures announced on Wednesday that it is producing a new computer-animated Starship Troopers: Invasion film with director Shinji Aramaki for release next summer. Aramaki had previously directed the two computer-animated Appleseed films, "The Package" segment of Halo Legends, Madox-01, Megazone 23 Part III, Viper's Creed, and the computer-animated pilot of Captain Harlock. He also worked on the mechanical designs for Bubblegum Crisis, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and other anime.

Flint Dille is writing the screenplay after working as a story editor on The Transformers and G.I. Joe television series of the 1980s. He later wrote the Venom film and the video-game tie-ins for The Chronicles of Riddick. The staff commissioned illustrator Hidetaka Tenjin (Macross Frontier, Macross Zero, Hellsing Ultimate) to create the teaser poster (pictured right). Joseph Chou (Appleseed films, Halo Legends, proposed live-action Evangelion) is producing the new project. Edward Neumeier and Casper Van Dien of the live-action Starship Troopers film are executive producers.

Sony Pictures give the following description of the plot:

A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. Carl Jenkins, now ministry of Paranormal Warfare, takes the starship on a clandestine mission before its rendezvous with the Alesia and goes missing in the nebula. Now, the battle-hardened troopers are charged with a rescue mission that may lead to a much more sinister consequence than they ever could have imagined....

Before Paul Verhoeven's loose live-action film adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers novel classic and several direct-to-video follow-ups, Gundam anime studio Sunrise produced a video version of Starship Troopers in 1988. Tetsuro Amino (Macross 7, One Stormy Night) directed that version with designs by Kazutaka Miyatake (Macross, Gunbuster, Eureka Seven).

Studio Nue (Macross, Legend of the Galactic Heroes) co-founder Naoyuki Kato had created powered suit designs for his illustrations in the 1977 Japanese reprint of Heinlein's novel. Sunrise has openly noted that Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino drew some inspiration from the humanoid powered suits of Heinlein's Starship Troopers, although the mobile suit robots of Gundam are ten times the size of humans (18 meters, or the same size as the super robot pioneer Mazinger Z).
I am rather interested in how this fares, hoping it's better than the live-action movie (which I still enjoy nonetheless), or the CG animated series. The staff list is definitely interesting, including Casper Van Dien (aka the movie's Johnny Rico) himself as executive director

Wow. This is great news! I always like that Paul Verhoeven movie even though it’s a loose adaptation. I even follow the CG animated series long ago in Animax. Still, I really hope that this newest project can be a faithful adaptation to Heinlein’s novel but I can see that it’s not the case. I’m still looking forward to this though. Seeing those archies and more badass bugs wreaking havoc and dismembering/impaling human soldiers really made my day!

Btw, will this be in Japanese or English?

I see a lot of Macross people in that article. I would think the designs will be good.

Do we get to see the troopers carrying giant radios to fight the bugs?

Didn't we already saw that in Macros Frontier? They fought those Vajra bugs with songs.
In this one though, they'll do a concert for the soldiers and the bugs can get all-you-can-eat out of the audience.

Looks good. It seems like they're keeping the cheesy humor, which is great.

That said, I have often hoped that John Steakly's Armor would find a way out from the shadow of Starship Troopers and be adapted to the screen, rather than yet another adaption of ST.

Also, isn't this thread in the wrong sub-forum?

Do I sense some influence of Dead Space for this?

Hmmmm, this could be interesting.

Mind you, I've not been a huge fan of the action sequences in the Two Appleseed movies, or the Package from Halo Legends. The action sequences in those in allot of places felt to flamboyant and wire fuey. I DO like over the top fight scenes, but I personally prefer for them to lean to the more grounded and gritty.

I'd take the animated features over the low budget crap they came out with last time.

Loved the first movie and the FIRST video game they made from it (squad based RTS) which blended elements from the movie with the novel.

Everything else has been a pure abortion...

Guns or nukes seemed to be the main options from the novel.
