Don't know if anybody has played the Evolution games on Dreamcast or Evolution Worlds on Gamecube, but I had forgotten just how good the music was until recently. It was composed by Masaharu Iwata who's known for his work in Final Fantasy Tactics/XII and Soul Caliber IV. I remember the music helped me through some of those long dungeons. Here's a few samples:

Thanks to some... other acquaintances of mine, I can nominate Assasult Suits Valken (better known as Cybernator in some areas) to the 'honorable mention' list. Note: this soundtrack comes in two forms:
VGMDB.net has entries for ASV2, but I have yet to run across this tuneage.

Give Final Fantasy 9 a chance and you'll love it. Since this is an Anime Community maybe more people will appreciate the fact that it has a more Anime-like soundtrack.
Magic Knight Rayearth for Sega Saturn was epic. To me, it was much better than the anime. It only sold something like 50,000 copies though. x_x You can find an ISO somewhere around. Something like Emulation Island or something? The SSF Emulator is finally at a version that will play just about any Sega Saturn CDs you burn. Good times. |

i would say
-the Final Fantasy series (VII was especially memoriable for me, specifically the opening theme) -not sure if they count as video games but: most visual novels (F/SN, Clannad etc) -Golden Sun (both) had some pretty nice music

When I was nine in 1998, I found the Bomberman Hero soundtrack awesome. Then, I was going through youtube the other day, and found some of them posted. I still find it pretty funky.
Spoiler for Some Bomberman Hero tracks:
Donkey Kong Country was great as well. Spoiler for Jungle Hijinks and Minecart madness:

Command & Conquer series (watch out for volume in the beginning - I always jump off my chair when I get to Main Menu )
Spoiler:
Hitman series (or any other OST from Jesper Kyd) Spoiler:
Mass Effect had one of the most beautiful OSTs I've ever heard. Spoiler:
Mirror's Edge had a very ambient feel to its soundtrack, but it's theme song was one of my favorites from the very beginning. Spoiler:
And of course, anything related to Capcom has great soundtracks as well. There are more, but I can't remember them all.

I personally found the music of Deus Ex (the first) one of the best (not just in the music though). Shame on you guys, no one mentioned it so far (or I'm short-sighted).
Edit: Spoiler for several OST-s. The combat musics start from about halfway in a few of them.:
Man! I almost feel like dusting it off from the shelves and play it again for the n-th time . Seriously though, for whoever who doesn't tried it out yet, you don't know what you are missing out! Last edited by izmosmolnar; 2009-05-02 at 05:55. |
