Personally I'd regard Tatami Galaxies sales as pretty poor, I doubt those figures you cited would have covered all their costs. Furthermore, Tatami Galaxy won awards as well, so it at best brought dissappointing sales, and at worst made a slight loss. Most award winning shows can usually aim for a bit more then that.

But that's a product targeted to an established fanbase.)

I'm not so sure. I remember that Kara no Kyoukai came out at R2 pricing in the US (something like $500 for the whole thing!) and it actually sold out all their first run copies, so I think there is a group of people in the US who would shell out that kind of money. The key is to identify what they want. I doubt they'd be going for the Moé vehicles that Otaku go for, but clearly something like KNK hit a chord.

Furthermore I think there's a flawed attitude here that you buy DVDs for watching. I see that as a flash in the pan thing, and soon it will revert back to the rental/streaming model, but with modern tech.

Instead they should aim to make their releases quite luxurious. The only people who will keep buying DVDs are those who like to boast about how big their collection is, Everyone else is going to move on to digital, just out of convenience.

Another alternative is to sell off their cels, storyboards and production sketches. I'd imagine there's a certain type of fan who'd pay hand over fist for that stuff, and it would hold more tangible value then a DVD as it's one of a kind. We're forgetting that every series has 1000s of frames of "art" that could easily be sold.

In the context of the anime/manga/game business, I don't think it really matters what you or any of us think about the sales figures. And in terms of noitaminA, those figures represent pretty good sales, especially considering the relatively low ratings the show got (vis-a-vis the timeslot). Admittedly, its ratings were probably brought down by Five Leaves, the other noitaminA show at the time.

Try reading the DVD/BD sales thread from ~this post.

The noitaminA thread also has an interesting discussion about the point of the timeslot (and thus why you really shouldn't use the DVD/BD sales of those shows as the only indicator of their success/failure). And read the discussion on whether the sales figures from 2ch reflect actual sales figures (they don't).

How much do you know of how anime is produced? i.e. the anime production model. One of your previous posts notes that (manga) publishers often help fund anime to advertise their manga...but did you know that most anime studios do not actually (help) fund the series they do the animation for?

I knew this already, for the vast majority of projects the anime is commissioned by someone outside the organisation, so the studio doesn't take much risk. This is why I was addressing "original" anime specifically, as that is almost always self funded. It would be rare for something original to be commissioned by some kind of outside organisation. Also, while they may recieve financing for such a work from a sponsor, the sponsor is still expecting a return, so it will still be important to the studio whether or not the anime turns a profit, more for ensuring they continue to get sponsorship.

Either way, unless the studio is completely mercenary (EG something like Madhouse's Marvel stuff), they still have to watch their sales. But for manga adaptations they can turn a slight loss if the manga increases sales.

You're seriously generalising now, but I don't really don't have the time to address all of it.

As a start:

Doraemon, Shin-chan and Pokemon were on break allowing a few shows to exceptionnally make it into the Top 10.

Most shows got ratings around their 2011 average (Toriko, One Piece, Suite Precure...). Only Beelzebub did particularly well while Detective Conan, Sazae-san and Chibi Maruko-chan got ratings under their 2011 average.

You're misreading me:

@1: I don't think it's necessarily so different, while the latter is directly "on the line" it is in neither's interest for something to fail, even those who haven't paid for it, as their reputation is still at stake. If they fail their clients they won't get hired again. Their is equal risk in both's approach, though of different kinds.

@2: As above, it still matters to the production company how well the series does. Likewise even if the sponsor is only in for advertising, they still want to see the show do well, otherwise their advertising is wasted.

@3: I said that original ideas are rarely commisioned by an outside agency, while usually they need to be self funded, or seek sponsorship of some kind.

As for this being OT, I don't think it is significantly. What we are discussing is related to ratings, both sales and viewership. Also, my question has been pretty much answered, I was just interested in further discussion of the stats, and their significance.

The thread might start getting slightly confusing if I just repost the top10 already present above (with just a few additional shows with lower ratings)... Maybe it'd make more sense if I asked a mod to get the first post in this thread, in which I'd post a recap of all the weeks posted so far (with a link to the posts) & that I'd update weekly?

Interesting detail I've been meaning to post for a while: TBS/MBS are doing some sort of summer "special", during which, for three weeks, they'll be airing an episode of the old (and highly popular) Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi show. These episodes will be shown on Sundays, August 14, 21 and 28, right before the Ao no Exorcist episodes. It'll thus be interesting to see how ratings go: as a reminder, TBS already re-broadcast one episode right before Ao no Exorcist's run, and it scored an 8.0% rating (which was impressive yet to be expected for a show of this caliber).
Note that it may have no influence on AoEx at all, since the two audiences barely overlap.

What happened to Fairy Tail? Are people just skipping the Edolas arc because they its bad? I remember before the Edolas arc started, the ratings were in the 3-5% range and now they're much lower. Maybe the timeslot change was the cause of the nose dive in ratings. Hopefully they'll pick up once the next arc starts.
