I personally would like to think then at the end, Lawrence does come to pass, and she does live on as a widow, then suppose some wierd stuff happens... like maybe shes murdered in front of lawrences grave and the child survives.... then it shows the child to grow up like lawrence... the end... has this story been used somewhere before???

I'd rather like to believe that after Lawrence' passing, Holo and their kid(s?) move on and start a new life. Maybe build a new home akin to Yoitsu and enjoy the rest of forever. |

Too dark! Besides, Holo is just very long-lived. She too one day will pass. I prefer to focus and the scope of the given story and the fact that Holo learned to not be afraid to love and got a new family and her happily ever after. There's no need to even think or postulate about the eventuality that it and all other stories possess (at least not in my mind). I'm happy with the way it stands (though I would welcome new, happy stories).

Agreed... the "murdered at the grave" sounds like some emo fan fiction. Why kill Horo to achieve the child "growing up like Lawrence"??? No, don't answer that. Horo is 'mortal' as far as she knows or has offered, just very long life span and difficult to kill through her connection to nature. There are some parallels in literature: Aragorn and Arwen in Lord of the Rings. Lazurus Long and some of his loves in the stories of author Robert Heinlein (At Long Last Love, Methuseleh's Children). In each case, the long-lived one fell deeply in love with a "mayfly" (regular mortal) and simply enjoyed the time with them and dealt with the grief.

Anything other than a happy ending just couldn't happen with Spice and Wolf (and just didn't happen).
Holo's own development through the light novels actually fixes the issue itself. She progressively comes to accept that she can't run away from her love for Lawrence out of fear of the future, deciding more to live and enjoy the present reality they had together. She wants to be with him, he wants to be with her. Behind all the economics, backstabbing and political intrigue, that remains the heart of S&W. |
