If he's more like classic antagonist. He grows beard and acted self-centered. There's reason why anime depicts him as an uncool person. Spoiler:

Well, I don't really know where they go with that, but a lot of these type of shows do have slightly older guys as potential bad boys.

If I remember correctly, With parental (legal guardian) consent, girls and be legally married at age 16. Age of consent is 13, youth protection refine it to limit to cases involve legal adults. IE: you can have intercourse all you want with minors until you are 20 years old, after that you got to wait. But as I mention girls can be legally married at age 16 (male is 18) which would overturn the protection law. Exactly, Harada is still the man!!!!

The episode title comes from the 73rd poem. Here's the U. Virginia translation:
On that far mountain On the slope below the peak Cherries are in flower. Oh, let the mountain mists Not arise to hide the scene. We have seen this poem before: Kana takes it when she defeats Tsutomu in the tournament of several episodes past. The poem means here what it meant then: it expresses a hope that the outcome of the match should not cause a veil to rise to estrange the characters from each other or from karuta. In this episode, the sentiment applies most clearly to Yumin, who feels crushed at her defeat, to the point of thinking she is so outclassed as to have not even the thought of beating Shinobu, but who finds--through the connection of her friends and teammates and her coach--a reason to keep fighting. The issue of a veil is pertinent, since we see Suo's opponent so enraged by Suo's toying with him that he finds himself on the verge of hating karuta. Suo is Sudo to an extreme, who uses karuta sadistically as a weapon to humiliate others. (Specifically, Suo is putting his knife into Shinobu, mirroring her scores as a way of showing her up. Takemura he presumably couldn't care less about.) Against this nastiness, to use Shinobu's word, the episode juxtaposes Shinobu's love of the cards, which is also taken to an extreme: Shinobu pets a card at one point (!), and talks to them in her mind at several places (!!). Clearly, the anime is on Shinobu's side of the argument, and the episode title--with its appeal that there should be no veil arising--is there to insist on the path of love in karuta. -------- Once again Suetsugu-sama puts before us highly individual portraits of women, sympathetically delineated, sometimes in opposition to conventional attitudes. She invites us to identify with a chubby Shinobu, which amounts to a radical act of sympathy for all those chubby girls who are disdained due to their weight. There is also the child Shinobu, another outsider at school, who--like Arata--is picked on by her classmates, but perseveres in her love of karuta. We meet Shinobu's grandmother, a regal matriarch, who ordinarily wears traditional dress and who is sympathetic--presumably on traditional grounds--with Shinobu's interest in karuta. Less sympathetically presented are Taichi and Shinobu's mothers. Taichi's mom is amusingly horrid in this episode. New to us is Shibobu's mother: a divorcee, who angrily chastises Shinobu for playing with karuta cards. We don't have enough detail to reach a solid conclusion, but I wonder if both don't exemplify modern women the author dislikes in favor of more traditional roles? ------ Much of the episode is narrated through Chihaya's point of view. She understands Shinobu almost instinctively, and is able to intuit details about her no one else comprehends or even notices. She figures out at once the reason for Shinobu's weight gain; she realizes Shinobu is connected to the cards with a love that has the physicality of threads connecting her to them; and she is finally moved to tears by Shinobu's passion. At this point Chihaya herself has become unintelligible to her friends, who have no idea why she is crying. Chihaya has such a deep sympathy for karuta that she alone is able to enter into the Queen's mindset. This is important, since the anime seems to be making the argument that it is this love for the cards that finally explains Shinobu's extraordinarily ability to play the game. If Chihaha is able to recognize that love, then she perhaps is also able to reach that same intensity of passion, and eventually be able to become Queen herself. ----- Some random thoughts: I thought it interesting that Yusei played the role of coach for Chihaya in this episode. The two times he swivels Chihaya's head to watch the screen were just wonderful! So far that she listened to him, then the episode may mark another advance in Chihaya's steps toward reaching the finals. Is that not Murao-san watching the finals at 19:15? He'll be back! It was also interesting to note that Arata was watching the match from home, and not with his club. Like Shinobu, he plays alone, but perhaps by necessity, since he has no one to play with, and not by disposition. Arata at least plays in part due to his friendship with Chihaya and Taichi, and not solely for the cards themselves. Finally, a poster over on Random Curiousity made the point that the episode shows us "Supernatural Karuta powers vs. Hardworkers." That does seem to be the case: Yumin and Takemura are portrayed as exemplary hard workers, and yet both are steamrolled by players at an entirely higher level. Are their powers supernatural? We can argue the case, but Shinobu's comment--"I don't know why, / but just as I love karuta / the karuta also loves me"--followed by the card falling apparently on its own into her waiting hands--suggests something strange is going on.

^ I don't know about a second season, but the last episode of the series has me dying for one now more than ever. They might not have focused on the romantic plot like some would have liked, but it was a beautiful finale nonetheless.

I think there could be another season.
The reason why I think so is because of the "if you dont manage to gather 5 new members, I will take your club room away". It sounded like the karuta club has some work cut out for them and its not something I would expect if the series is not getting a second season. |

It would be a crime for there to not be a second season. Wonderful show. It's not the end, and I might be forced to the read the manga after this though... but wonderful last episode that just leaves you wanting more .

A well constructed final episode, it's been a while since I've been left yearning this much for a continuation. Excellent, excellent series.

Hopefully, it is merely the end of the first season and not the end of the series. If it's the former, than it was a nice way to end it. It really left us craving for more.
Kana-chan stole the episode once again in my eyes. She's got a long and hard road ahead of her, but I'm sure she can make it. Unexpectedly, the Meijin might become Desk-kun's rival for Kana's affection, as he seems to have a thing for readers ("Kyoko-tan" ). Taichi calling Arata was a great moment. I love seeing these two interact, most likely because these kind of scenes are so rare. Their conversation seemed a bit more natural than usual this time around. Their common goal has brought them closer. I loved Taichi's transformation into a (fake) sadist. I didn't see that one coming. It actually suits him quite well It was good to see Miyauchi defend the Karuta club so fiercely. Unfortunately, she's been had. There's no way the Karuta club will be able to recruit 5 more members... is there? We'll find out next season. Or not.

I loved the way they brought it all nicely full circle at the end, with Chihaya posting up flyers again.
It'll be nothing short of a crime if this show doesn't get the second series it so richly deserved. If you'd told me six months ago that one of my absolute favourite shows would revolve around a uniquely Japanese card game based on classical poetry, I wouldn't have thought it likely. But this show had everything I liked, good characters, comedy (Chihaya's reaction faces were always a wonder to behold), drama, real character development, avoidance of obvious cliches, and the aforementioned weird Japanese card games were just surprisingly gripping to watch. I definitely want to see more of this. |

Damn one of my fav animes end again T_T
It was so great , need a season 2 ! I likes how they are developing the characters. My best part : - How to kill the mood in 2 sec ? - Tell your dream to Chihaya That was so funny. Also , when Kana was trying to perfectly sing the poem , she was wonderful. Arata x Taichi was a touching moment. The emoticon was hilarious. The prez got some humors after all Please give us more ! Why always the wonderful ufo animes are so underrated.... |

Okay Crying forever that it's over!
Although "the club needs 5 more members" gives me hope that they are planning for a 2nd season. Oh how I hope. But really this was a truly wonderful series. I also think this was a truly wonderful thread that generated some thought provoking discussions which made the show even more enjoyable for me. This series is not just going on my favorite of the year list but my favorite of all time list.

If you asked me to name my least favorite genres of anime, odds are not bad that the first two things out of my mouth would be "sports" and "josei". With that in mind, in the past two years, I have seen three anime I would call 5-star shows. Chihayafuru is one of them.
I'm really glad no one told me 6 months ago what this show was about, because the conversation would have gone something like this: "So there's this card game-" "Okay, I'm going to stop you right there." |
